Got 40.19, started a new fort, played for a while, saw the message "The Goblin Outpost Liaison has arrived!". Say what? As near as I can figure, the outpost liaison from the Mountainhomes is a female goblin. I haven't gone into Legends to see how that happened, but I'm curious. (I'm sure it's happened to someone before, but this is the first time it's happened to me...)

But they never would have given up either. And compared to sitting around in this prison for the rest of my life? Losing is fun.

Check your civilization screen, maybe you have a couple of goblin nobles or a goblin monarch as well.

Almost lost my fort to "military-doesnt-fight" bug, as all my soldiers just stood there in the middle of horde and started to sleep. One hammer lord saved the day, as enemy swordman woke her up by hitting her helmet about 20 times without any effect... for some reason this hammer lord wasnt trapped to this bug anymore and she beat the hell out of nearby enemies. Rest fled...

There are two confirmed werehyenas locked in their hospital rooms, waiting for me to come up with a creative use for them. One has been sleeping in his bed for months, even through transformations. The other manages to make room's furniture disappear when I'm not looking. What is he doing with them, eating them?

Reclaimed a ruined fortress in a good region and almost immediately flooded half of it (the bottom half, if you were wondering) so now my dwarves can't reach the beds or the leatherworks, currently trying to undo my mistake...

Also need to set up a military before the first goblin squads come, because I'm pretty sure that's why it was lost the first time...

Progress report on Allaszefon, whose name in translation I momentarily forget.

The fort has been transferred to 40.19. My herbalists are once again gaining skill points.

We had some problems with wereopossums, but that seems to have died down now. Presumably they kept coming my way, I kept killing them and (fingers crossed) there are no more left.

Now for my game goals.

New fortress in 40.16. Still on a learning curve; this fort's objectives are to learn more about the military (managed to get a decent military up and running in the last fortress, but want to make sure it wasn't a fluke), raids and sieges (only had titans and FBs so far), glass industry (think I've got ceramics down fairly well, and glass is more useful overall), traps (related to the desire to see some raids), and dfhack/workflow (starting to work this out, but I had problems with stoneware/fire clay in my last fort, and I think shearing, milking and the like will still be problems for me).

Military, raids and sieges: think we're probably there. I'm waiting for the elves to come a-calling again, at which point I shall attempt to pee them off royally and see whether my five highly-trained hammerdwarves can successfully dispatch whatever they want to throw at me. I shall blame Thisfox if they don't, since her advice is that their all-steel armour should be more than sufficient. I haven't yet taken on any FBs, since the two which have arrived have been knocking seven bells out of anything they can find and making the caverns an orgy of dead bodies and miasma.

Glass industry: definitely a convert. I have managed to build so much stuff out of green glass, it's wonderful. Blocks mean glass bridges, glass walls, glass floors; I can make windows which allow me to increase the value of rooms (dig out the walls, smooth & engrave, then put windows on top); vials for my soldiers' drinkies; trap components; doors which can be used to control magma flows... the list is seemingly endless. And it makes me wonder what I'm keeping my stone for. Magma-safe mechanisms, sure, and then what?

Traps: I built one. It has been consistently guarding me against the foul and invasive plague which menaces my doorstep: cavies. Wonderful, such a boon to dwarfkind. Actually, they are kind of Tribble-like, so it's probably better than I think. Anyway, I should put in more before the elves come asking for trouble, since it would be nice to see the traps take on a weightier target.

Workflow: tick! This is fantastic, I'm using it for almost anything appropriate. It takes all the micromanagement right out of the production cycle, freeing me to focus on the fort's overall strategy. Most of the time, I feel like I have very little to do, in a good way.

Bonus: ostrich taming has been a great success. The eggs seem to be taking quite a while to hatch, but autobutcher takes most of the strain, and each hen produces 10-15 chicks per annum, which makes for a far healthier meat industry than sheep. (Which are still my favourite animal.)

Did you outfit them all in full steel plate at low armor skills? That can be a death sentence if they aren't prepared to wear the armor because it weighs them down, slows them down, makes swimming impossible, and tires them quickly.

Moody smith! I made sure he grabbed steel bars. It's a war hammer but it should still hurt quite a bit I guess:

Almost 200k worth and with a pretty picture of my duchess. Guess she'll become a hammer dwarf now! =D

PS: We don't speak of the diorite trumpet... *sigh*
So it's basically a giant stamp for putting pictures of your duchess on things? Neat.

Game is crazy today. Many crazy, short time.

A previous forgotten beast infected another forgotten beast with a syndrome causing its feet to swell up and rot off when it walked through a pool of extract the previous beast had left in the cavern lake. My dorfs also appear to have been affected by this syndrome, or some syndrome, because they have been afflicted with constant dizziness. But none of them, nor any of the animals, have had problems with swelling or associated necrosis. To my knowledge, nobody has been bitten by a cave spider, and the only other beast on the map is trapped in the third cavern layer: my dorfs only have access to the first and second caverns, where the other two forgotten beasts have been killing everything in sight.

Praying one of the GCS will wander into a trap so I can turn it into a silk farm.

I recently created a new pocket world with a short history since that's supposed to help with FPS. Three necromancer towers dotted the lower half of the map. Sensing fun, I embarked in the middle of them. Quite unsurprisingly, my civilization was dying and at the end of the first year (and after a zombie siege) my broker Stinthäd Floormaster became queen of the (aptly named) Lush Towers. The only previous king was Dumat Momentportal, who became obsessed with his mortality in 64.

Guess who just showed up leading a siege against my fortress?

Glad to hear he found his place in unlife and made it a career!

Just unleashed the clowns. Checking through their compositions: brine... Flesh... Water... Iron... Steam... Woo- iron? Merde. Gabbro? Amethyst? God dammit... Three tough, hammer immune demon types. The most of my military is hammer dwarves. Luckily, I've got a group of artifact sword wielders. Every smith had to like swords or spears.

Having my dwarves clean up after a goblin siege.  The royal guard performed exemplary and the crossbow-dwarves actually did their duty firing from the ramparts.  Didn't even need the weapon traps.

Also, I'm initiating a "slaughter all horse foals" policy since I accidentally created a horse-splosion (yes, it's possible) outside my fort.

(Fortress Rockadmire, still in DF2012).

EDIT: Ooo, one of my brewers has gone berserk!  She was caught strangling a child near the caverns, but was then dispatched by a passing hammerdwarf.  The child will be escorted to the hospital.

Just mined a clear diamond! One piece of roc leather, a clear diamond, a legendary leatherworker who likes cloaks... Have a mood already!
