Intending to get my Magma Forges going, I dug down to the magma sea. I'd discovered a magma pool before, but since i'm used to Magma Pools not refilling I figured I'd have to dig down to the sea. After a lot of digging my staircase could not go any further down because there was semi-molten rock everywhere.
After looking up on the wiki what semi-molten rock means and indirectly discovering that magma pools are today's magma pipes, I decided to make my magma forging level a few levels higher by tapping into the magma pool.
After a bit of digging, I suddenly got announcements that digging and construction was being cancelled: Interrupted by Magma Man.
I'd not yet breached any magma pools or seas, so apparently magma men can walk through and/or spawn from semi-molten rock...
I drafted some of the more useless dwarves to wrestle it to death. This did
not work as planned.
I then proceeded to get warnings of a goblin invasion. I have a lot of traps set up, but my dwarves encountered them outside, and are subsequently not luring them into the traps. The 'dwarves go outside' option is nowhere to be found, and I've not worked with burrows yet so I am not sure how to use those either
All this without any military dwarves. Some migrants do have armor and/or weapon skills, but I've not figured out a good way to find these specific dwarves back without manually going through them all (I've not nick named anyone yet..) I'm also weary to draft the woodcutters and miners because previous forts have made the game bug out where said woodcutters and miners would not go back to woodcutting or mining,
or they would not pick up the equipment to do so.
I will now proceed to watch my fortress die and then I will regen and start from scratch, taking with me the lessons learned: if you encounter semi-molten rock,
WALL IT OFF.
