Aha, I think I've an excellent idea – remember how flesh balls allow training for blunt weaponry essentially indefinitely because they can only die by bleeding out? I think turning them into bloodless husks might allow them to have the same effect for axe/sword/spear training.
I predict that they'll bludgeon your dwarves to death with their bodyslams.

Don't training axes / swords / spears do only blunt damage?

That they do. Incredibly weak attacks, but considering the purpose of it in this instance, that will be just fine.

Seriously though, does anybody have any tips on conquering hell through the demon fort? My military has to recover first obviously.

As said previously, I managed to survive the initial Zerg rush. The remaining ones just have physical attacks and a few firespitters, so they are pretty much doable with just melee.

I've never actually cleared a creepy castle, but I imagine that baiting them into a trap will not be easy here. My best advice would be to try giving all soldiers more than one shield to improve their survivability. Do the fire spitters just hurl fire balls, or do they shoot dragonfire-like cones?

In either case, try not to give the military any flammable gear. Though fire-breath will melt your armour, even if it is candy.

I've seen both, though that may come from two different demon types. I also checked the number and the firebreathers/spitters consist of about 38 of the total.

I also made the mistake of leaving the lashers their wooden shields (to enhance agility) when I sent them against the demons. It seemed to have REALLY gone south the moment the web shooters started then.

To get dwarves to equip multiple shields, can I just assign them one, or do I have to do some equipment juggling?

Web shooters are potentially the deadliest, since they seem to be able to spam their webs constantly. I would recommend getting some marksdwarves in there to soften them up.

You should be able to get dwarves to equip more than one shield at a time without any juggling. Just make sure that they get their weapon first.

There aren't any webshooters, they were all in that first wave. The rest are spitters, poisonous bite, and blood suckers.

Part of the problem that I had with the first wave is that the marksdwarves actually stopped shooting, if they had kept up the rate of fire and reloaded themselves without my intervention, I MIGHT have done a little better.

Though in hindsight I should have put a door there to block their pathing.

ARG! I closed off a doe rabbit that an immigrant brought (didn't want to have a rabbitsplosion) to make the animal starve to death and now I have the owner spamming 'cancel feed animal: animal inaccessable'

I saw the dwarf do the job once and she went to the spot where the animal had died (the rabbit is still listed as missing and I've since atomsmashed the corpse) and the bit of food that she took over there dissappeared. Looked like she was feeding a ghost or something.

I tried to get the dwarf killed by attacking a mud FB with poison vapors, which turned out to be a temporary unconsciousness and either a permanently bruised stomach or rotten stomach. Had to pit a few tigers in to kill the FB since it's attacks were so pathetic. Even after she woke up, she is STILL spamming the cancellation message, even when freaking active soldier.

Edit: Got her by sending her against three cave ogres, who promptly ganged up on her.

Edit: EEP! a humanoid FB composed of black bronze with poisonous gas has appeared!
How difficult would this material be compared to regular bronze? I had a bronze FB before and it was about as difficult to kill as a BC.

Edit: Okay, wasn't too bad and after I had pitted a few animals in, I saw that the syndrome was just a bit of dizzyness that wore off in a short period of time.

Fortress has been much fun. Vampire, half my militia dying of old age...

Luckily, though, the dwarves have been relatively safe and happy behind the walls and traps. I even caught a gaggle of raven people. Trying to come up with something entertaining to do with them.

A possessed dwarf made a bed out of violet spessartines. I like it.

My current fort is the best fort I had so far, and I'm loving it!

One hilarious thing that happened:

A diplomat named Quula Cákuthzebu appeared on my fort. I found the announcement strange:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He appears to be considered some kind of "deity", but I couldn't help but laugh a lot at his description:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

 :P

Another thing that I liked was when the dead body of one of my farmers has appeared, and 13(!!!) witness saw that the guilty was a cheese maker. Since this was the first fort that I've ever had the justice system "working", I accused him and waited for him to be sentenced. I found it odd when he didn't get any, but then a message appeared saying that his dead body was found, and no one saw who killed him. So I opened the combat log, hopping I could find out how he died, and saw that:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently, the captain of the guard decided to do justice with his own hands... literally. His thoughts after doing it were awesome:

" 'Soldier #2' Sazirlam has been quite content lately. He took joy in slaughter lately. He has witnessed death. He slept in a poor bedroom recently. He had a satisfying sparring session recently. He has been satisfied at work lately. He beat somebody recently. "

I also have a vampire locked in a room after he killed one luckily-useless dwarf. Not sure what I'm gonna do with him yet :P

The marksdwarf got up a lot sooner than I expected, particularly since he's really slow to heal. Haven't checked up on the infection yet, but we have plenty of soap.

meanwhile, Artifact bone crossbow! The fort is up to three awesome weapons now, a platinum warhammer, a candy sword and this. artifact crossbows are somewhat less awesome in my book, but i'll take what i can get.

Demon preparations are still under way. I'm thinking about isolating the rest of the fortress from the bait chambers to prevent unnecessary deaths. containment is so far taking greater priority than combat, though 30 enlightened goblins should prove to be a challenge. once the hell invasion is over, i still gotta figure out what to do with the rest of them.

Around the end of year 1, a flock of giant cockatiels got husked at the same time a migrant wave arrived. This particular wave contained a dwarf with extremely high metal/weaponsmithing, so I needed to save the migrants if at all possible. My pair of axelords was down in the first cavern layer, having just dealth with a rutherer, but fortunately Bim Yearlinggloves, one of my hunters, was around to distract the cockatiel husks long enough for them to be puréed via ☼steel battle axe☼. The master smith entered the fort unharmed due to the efforts of Bim, who, though he survived, lost his left hand in the process. I gave him the custom title "Valiant Defender" and planned to assign him special lodgings later.

Later on, a human necromancer entered my map and began reanimating a few corpses. I quickly sealed the fort and set cage traps in an attempt to catch him, but another migrant wave arrived, forcing me to briefly open the entrance again, and what should wander in after them but Bim's now-skeletal zombie left hand? It ran straight into a cage trap.

I'm constructing Bim's room currently. The centerpiece? His own hand in a lead cage.

EDIT: Ooh, just as I type this, a bone carver finished an artifact — a forgotten beast bone sword called "The Incidental Breaker." I shall have to find a ceremonial use for this.

My plans have come to fruition. The table is set, and now it's just a waiting game. A game of ‼FUN‼.

Also, my sheep are beating each other to death for some reason. And the vampire mayor is demanding I make shoes. Not a bad demand, considering I've been neglecting my clothing industry.

I started up a new speardwarf squad a bit ago, also had to deal with a bit of equipment strangeness with some of my 6 person longsword squad since three weren't equipping shields for some reason.

I'm thinking of re-enlisting the old axedwarf and lasher squads which I had retired due to blindness (and to get a new generation in I guess). Even if they are blind, they are longtime fort veterans, and many have been around since the early days and their strength will be an asset when I send an army down into hell. Probably retrain the lasherdwarves to something else, haven't decided what, maybe speardwarf and mix the newbies with the veterans.

...so I just killed the elven traders but for some reason I can't claim the animals they had as my own. Any ideas? I really want to make that leopard a war leopard, but the animals show up under "Others" in my Unit tab, and as Merchant (Caged).

I accidentally gave them something of wood and they were leaving...hopefully I can claim the animals...the small tame ones (hedgehog/rat/toad) show up as my own, just not the bigger ones (dingo/leopard/etc.).

I have a problem. I've hit a creativity/morality block with my volcano fort. I have the infrastructure available to drain the volcano, but I don't want to risk/sacrifice dorfs setting up the pumps (usually I would just throw fisherdorfs/cheesemakers at the problem but this is a no migrant fort.) I've been stockpiling clay blocks for this occasion but just can't bring myself to commit.

So I've decided to desensitize myself to this fort by starting a new one, but I've got some nitpicky issues.

I have two worlds, one in which the elves have nearly driven the dorfen civilization extinction (like 1500 dorfs left in the world vs millions of elfkin,) but this world has no really notable geographic features (other than some weird gem spots) and too many minerals. The other has both an obsidian desert and a great white salt desert. The goblin civ also has ogres, which have been fun for my expert spear dorfs (i.e. "fun").

Which world should I choose and any suggestions on possible projects? I kind of want to make a giant quarry.

Firstly, I hope this is your Museum fort you are describing.

Secondly, the sheep are becoming fratricidal as they do not have sufficient pasture, and are competing for food.
