Sieges are being terribly frequent again, so I'm starting work on "The Project". A small-scale, reusable "Fuck The World", designed to bring flaming magma-based death to anything that happens to be standing outside my gate. Building the thing is going to be insane, because it's my first real fluid-related thing I've ever done. 100 or so dwarves... That's enough for some to be expendable, right?

Took a little break from DF, suffered from a lack of creativity.

Looked through my save files, found an old one for a fort in the last throes of a massive tantrum spiral that resulted in 98% of the population dying (sparked by a child getting his skull crushed by a sock in the Coinstar danger room).

5 dwarves are alive, a speardwarf who has had the duty of killing many, many berserking dwarves and is pretty well hardened, the mayor who is upset about being yelled at but thrilled because half the fortress belongs to him, a mason and a farmer who are cranking out slabs and engraving them as fast as they can, and a lone kid wandering around whose parents died in the massive melee.

Gonna see how far I can take these guys, just managed to get the last murderous ghost put to rest, so we will see.

This is why I regularly impale a Dorf in my meeting hall, peace through terror. Keep the slags in their place.

I've finally got the grand majority of my dwarves trained up in the best Mooding skill for each dwarf's preference, and yet the past 3 moods have been Children making wooden or stone crafts.  >:(

Hurry it up gorrammit I want some artifact maces/hammers made before I smelt any adamantine!

My fortress is cursed... and not in a !!FUN!! way.  I think it was built on a goblin burial ground.

Every single mood (there have been 10 so far) has been the result of a possession.  Every single mood has produced some useless wood and stone trinket that doesn't even have a high value in DB.  Not a single dwarf has gotten even a touch of useful skill from any of them.

Damn you, dead goblins.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

I once had a dorf drown and then had a series of possessions. All of them resulted in floodgates. The game might have been trying to tell me something.

First post :D

This fortress started out very fast, by the second summer I had amassed 320 000 dwarfbucks and the metal industry was already thriving.

I got a lucky master axedwarf on the second immigration wave, which quicly got decked out with an exceptional steel battleaxe and bad quality steel mailshirt, gauntlets, highboots, helmets and a shield.

This quickly rising fortress obviously attracted a lot of attention, and by the first human caravan came two goblin ambush squads, a nasty crossbowsquad and an axesquad. I was planning on letting them just run at the trap corridor, but noticed a fatal flaw in the defensive walls; the damned crossbowgoblins shot through the unwalled river! and so, the axelord and her meatshields recruits rushed towards the ambushers. they swiftly noticed the problems in the strategy when they were met with a hail of arrows, and many of the recruits got wounded. This, however, would not demoralize the awesome axelord who dodged every arrow thrown at her and began mercilessly hacking limbs off with her axe. Soon the goblins started retreating and I thought it was over.
Another ambush, this time from the south, was spotted by a woodcutter. while the recruits were running away Sibrek likotbiban ran straight towards the enemy and started hacking at the squad's commander. After witnessing their leader be chopped to pieces the goblins took the advice and ran. Our awesome axelord ran after them and killed two more before they reached the edge of the map.

She was now a high master axeman, and has gotten eight kills. Her war efforts were noticed and he was the first dwarf to have a mausoleum.

Two years after it began, an undead siege left the area. During that time, a tantrum spiral claimed the lives of all but five dwarves in the fortress. Ghosts, miasma and a litter of items thrown about in rage littered the fortress proper, but through the chaos, these dwarves somehow struggled through the deaths of the friends, family, and pets who were unable to be buried properly. Makeshift coffins were thrown together, slabs erected to quell the murderous ghosts, and slowly the refuse piles rotted down to nothing.

The food stores, once full of barrels of all kinds of alcohol and foodstuffs, have been depleted only slightly by the needs of these five. It has taken two years, but in the Spring of the year 408 the fortress Emeraldcity the Gleam of Brightness will once again shine green in the sun; the obsidian and green glass walls surrounding the volcano pit reflecting the sun in dazzling arrays of light. The trade depot awaits the first traders in years, and the front gates await the first intrepid migrants to brave the hazards of a fortress assumed lost to the undead.

A baby, born to the only remaining couple in the ruins of the fortress is the first sign of rebirth. The remaining five dwarves stand ready to greet newcomers, clad in the finest steel armaments the fortress had produced before the crisis in Year 406. Worn in memory of the legendary dwarves that forced steel into its final shape, and in tribute to the lives the weapons ended; some of whom were the very dwarves that forged the weapons.

This fortress shall prosper once again.

"THE PROJECT" is on hold.
The mayor has issued a mandate that I hadn't noticed.
As a result, he has sentenced the dwarf I named after myself to jail. This is unacceptable.
I am now engineering a cave-in chamber for Mr. Mayor. I DO hope he enjoys it... *creepy grin*

Everything I'm about to write about happened within one week. I'm pretty sure it was within 3 days, but I can only narrow it down to a week because a little boy was born 7 days ago, and it was before all of this began.

A caravan from Umshadlibash has arrived.

They arrived in the far southwest corner of the embark and began moving north towards the depot.

The Dragon Thali Faci Nelare has come! A gigantic reptilian creature. It is magical and can breathe fire. These monsters can live for thousands of years.

Well crap. I've only captured rocs and hydras before (on this embark); a dragon would be great if I could get my hands on it. But there's a good chance it'd breathe fire on my cage traps and destroy them, if it runs into my caravan on its way in. I'll just have to hope for the best I guess. At least it arrived in the far northwest, far from the caravan.

/unpause

An ambush! Curse them!

And the dragon was the one who revealed them. Superb. So I'm going to have to deal with a grassfire now. And why the hell is that marksdwarf ignoring the military alert and heading towards the northeast? This is no time to collect ammo from outside the safezone. He'd better not trigger another amb-

An ambush! Curse all friends of nature!

...what? In the autumn? At the same time as a goblin ambush?

An ambush! Curse all friends of nature!
An ambush! Curse all friends of nature!
An ambush! Curse all friends of nature!

Oh goddammit.

So my dragon is dead before I could capture it, I've got the only merchant caravan I'll get all year winding their way up the mountain, two revealed, mounted elven ambush squads (including fliers), an unknown number of stealthed ambush parties from either of the two civilizations I'm at war with around the map, and a wildfire that threatens to burn or melt whatever's in its path.

This autumn is way too goddamn fun.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
First usage of the raised bridge hilariously failed as the entire thing collapsed onto the ground. Consider use as a projectile weapon against invaders.

-Fully Smoothed or Engraved my Upper Fortress

-discovered magma sea, in process of moving fortress down there... so far 1/2 my 87 population is
down there.

-completed "pipeline" connecting Surface Brook and Underground Lake to my Lower Fortress, which will eventually have grandoise water features... So far my future dining hall/hospital has a water source.

Plan is to fully furnish a *Palace* for the Dwarf I named after my(forum)self with gold statues and furniture, and build an underground moat protecting the Palace from invaders.

So a Cyclops attacked a human caravan today. She grabbed a spear from a human spearman and proceeded to stab them with it. All the while a lasher was repeatedly striking the monster, just bruising the creature.

Now a zombie siege.

Just got my first necro. Guess I'll have to kill it.

Update:
I killed one of the FOUR Necros that I got. I was playing with jail, I released him before building the bridge.
This is their jail:

The middle cell is still under construction, the other bridges are getting linked to the top-lever outside the cell (the other lever is for releasing the Necro from the cage). In the right room I plan to set-up a zombie factory in order to train my unskilled dwarves. It's still under construction, I plan to half it, so that I can choose between raising the dead or use Necros as targets for leveling marksdwarves.

A dwarf had a strange mood, and he just stood in the dining room, so I started building pretty much every workshop possible. I think it was my fifth workshop that was the right one. Then he said he wanted cut gems and leather. I didn't have gems and I didn't have animals, but after some complex stuff I got him the stuff he needed.

He then made a leather thong that menaces with spikes of brass.

Meanwhile, the construction of a new death pit failed utterly,
as the miners dug UNDER the pit before they started channeling.
Result: Two miners with overlapping fractures, legs torn open and extreme pain.
My chief medical dwarf won't even treat them. He just sits in his room and has "no job".

The best thing about is, that the chief medical dwarfs room is just next to the rooms of the miners.

Your ChiefMed has good Diagnosician skill does he?

If he has then the reason might be because he is the kind fo Dwarf who 'does not like helping others'.
That's two reasons i can think of off hand.
