You have to add a child tag to Toads and Olms for them to breed. (Toady hasn't programed amphibian breading yet.)

Ah, I was not aware of that. Thank you.

When dwarves figure out how to heat rock nut oil with magma, all living things will come to tremble at the coming deep fried Apocalypse. (Gawd I need to proofread more.)

Year one at Rigothkilrud is nearly over with no major incidents.  Most of the work to connect the volcano's magma pipe to the forge area is complete.  Now the workers are smoothing the plumbing.  When that is done, we'll tap the magma.

Since this is the first time this overseer has worked with this kind of project, we'll probably need slabs.  How many will be determined shortly.

Edit: Huh.  We expected the dwarf who pulled the short straw to have magma related fun, but he pulled off the job without a hitch.  Magma is flowing and we'll soon be able to power the furnaces and forges we've built.  A good way to end the year.

AdmiredMansions has been invaded by a +Saguaro Rib Minecart+.  It has killed two haulers and a miner, and has ambushed at least 6 other dwarves.  It's still rampaging through the minecart testing facility because my dorfs aren't smart enough to path around it.  With some forbidding of socks and general pathing directions, we've managed to avoid this monster.

We're planning to drown the thing out of its hallway, since it's become such a terror.  The walls are covered with the blood of its victims, and the water should rinse away that as well.  Once we finish digging out the drainage channel so we don't end up with a magma-warmed swimming pool at the base of the main cavern stairway, we'll crack the aquifer and rid ourselves of this menace... at least until the Overfiend decides he's going to try the impulse elevator again.

On a side note, do you have to have an open space above the rampway that does the impulse component?  In the diagram on the wiki it doesn't look like you have to 'open up' the squares over the impulse component.

Discontent in Fortressbowel over tattered clothing finally starts boiling over. A farmer goes berserk and starts fighting 2 war dogs, ripping the tongue of one and fatally wounding another before being killed by the militia. Several young dwarves start fist fights, ending in bruised pancreas for all involved.

Mass production of trousers, tunics and shoes is underway but we suspect it will not improve the situation given the dwarven tendency to completely ignore brand new clothing sitting on a stockpile.

Oh dear the mayor has been assaulted by a partially clothed dwarf.

Year 318. The unthinkable has happened. We have NO PLUMP HELMETS. None, nadda, no spawn, no shrooms, zilch.
Facing dire sobriety, the great plump helmet famine forces my dorfs to divert magma from the main pumpstack to clear out the cavern. Now masses of dorfs are scrounging the cave moss for brewables.

After spending more than a year in a fort composed of massive mined-out magnetite pockets, most dwarves are currently being moved to the underfort. The upper fort will now serve as an elaborate deathtrap for any invaders who manage to survive the weapon traps at the entrance. I've put up some drawbridges that allow quick and easy traffic through the abandoned levels, while forcing goblins and other unpleasant folks to take a long detour when raised. This should give us enough time for the red alert.

Prospect promises large amounts of cassiterite and native gold somewhere below us. Probably under the first cavern layer. I'm considering opening up the caverns - I am anxious to move my llamas below ground, but I also fear the fps loss.

Rigothkilrud, 16th Obsidian, 127

Things were going well until Zon Avuzeggut began throwing tantrums...throwing wood...throwing fists...and otherwise being a nuisance.  After yelling at the expedition leader incoherently 4 times, he finally spit out that his masterpiece was defaced.

Zon, bless his beard, is barely an apprentice.  He's delusional!  Even so, we've improved his mood marginally by letting him yell at the boss and giving him his own room.  He was one of the last using the dormitory anyway.

Our distractions have helped but his mood still sours as time passes.  Hopefully he'll come around before he looses his mind.  Knowing his temper, he'll be one of the 'zerks.

Fortressbowel, pop 235, year 22

Sporadic unrest continues due to the rotting clothes crisis, with morale and resentment building up among the dwarven youth. There have been several terrorist attacks against public officials like the Mayor and the bookkeeper who luckily escaped with only bruises.

Queen Kivish Likotosod's reign becomes increasingly unpopular as yet another prisoner jailed for violating a production order, dies of severe dehydration. Activists report Atir Lolorgeb was forced to search for vermin to try to keep himself alive in his last days.

A security lapse allows Os Tostrabeesp the giant armadillo into the heart of the fortress, 1 puppy casualty confirmed. Captain Kivish Nishborik is widely blamed amid whispers that this would never have happened under previous captains.

In good news, another siege by the Fondled Scourge was repelled with huge goblin casualties, temporarily distracting the peasantry from their terrible lives.

Massive siege just hit us, and instead of waiting them out I put the king's henchmen... errr... sword and spear lords to work, alongside a few of my own trained melee.  The couple of elite marksmen took out a couple of markdwarves on the ramparts, and the melees pretty much chewed through all the siege in two waves.  I cut off the rest of them from the trolls when I raised the drawbridge in the middle of their charge.

However, during all this... I missed something.  Orshar Hellriddle, a giant woodpecker with poisonous mandibles snuck into the cavern breach area somehow.  As far as I know, the entire thing is locked down, but he got in somehow.  I've got search tunnels all over god's creation for fortification breaches to map the caverns and a giant drop tunnel.  It could be... anywhere.  This is one of the reasons I only breach from the bailey tunnel.

Orshar snuck into the minecart testing facility while the majority of the fort was distracted by the siege, which apparently had a few buckets some poor hauler wanted during the civ alert.  He didn't make it.  I'd even seen the combat report go by and it didn't click that the poor guy was getting whomped on by an FB.  Currently my marksdwarves, who apparently didn't have enough time to go back for ammo, are trying to beat it down with their crossbows.  I had a swordsdwarf who hacked a good number of pieces out of him, but he just ran away for some reason.

Eventually one of my axelords got in there with a masterwork steel battle axe, and proceeded to treat the woodpecker like the trees it once haunted.  hack hack hack he slowly brought the thing down to his level, and another axe and sword lord joined in the fun.  They proceeded to treat the thing's head like a giant drum, and drummed out a tune that didn't really fit well with the constant squawking the bird made.  Eventually, it bled to death with multiple skull fractures, both wings torn off, its legs hacked to pieces, and profusely bleeding from its belly.

Now I need to get the military put back together.  Between the two events the hospitals going to be very busy.

On a positive note I've found I had a place to do a straight 120z drop from the sedimentary ore straight to the magma forge level without breaching the caverns.  With that dug out I've begun running tests to try to get a major ore dump mining project to work without power in any way.  After finishing testing on the impulse elevator and determining that for some reason or another any impulse elevator will derail on exit, simply finding the 'stop point' of the derail and using an impulse ramp there will re-rail the cart and get it going again.  It might, on occassion, take two impulses, but you can get back underway with minimal fuss and no loss of contents.  I tried it with water.  If anything was going to 'spill', that should have.

One other thing... I found out that Trolls and Gray Langurs and the occassional goblin can swim.  I breached the first cavern, which is mostly lakes, from my cage storage (in the bailey tunnel).  With a hatch over a large lake, I simply started dumping in all the bodies I didn't need that were filling up my lists.  A few of them lived.  Whatta ya know.

This Barbarian Settlement has got the worst luck of all the barbarian settlements I've tried yet.

No metal, not even galena or tetrahedrite, save for one. I had to cheat to see how much I could extract without pissing off the local demons, which are apparently "Towering three-eyed snakeflys. They have large mandibles and appear to be emaciated. Beware thier poisonous blood!"

So the metalworker and Expedition leader, Cavut Yovoldallo (trandlated as Plaitwars) has found herself not making weapons of war and basic armor from humble copper and silver, but haphazardly yanking strands free from the raw ore, while the miners try to finish extraction of it from out only lonesome spire.

To make matters worse, a herd of feral Rothe are trying to get topside into the light so they may spread their kind over the overlands, and as such are interrupting stockpiling of the raw ore. As the two swordsmen that came, Warriors Datost Yavateotarm (Wardpeacful) and Dat Evatvatot (Skirtcreek) have no weapons, so the miners may need to exterminate the herd and dig out a meat celler, further stalling our extraction.

I fear that the town's warriors will be forced to go into battle wielding glorified billy clubs and whatever else they can get their hands on when the enemy comes in the winter.

Yesterday, I embarked in a good area and had my first encounter with the legendary fluffy wambler. Today, I was looking up a different word in my trusty OED but happened to notice the verb "wamble" was the last word on a page I flipped to on the way. Up 'til then, I had assumed it was just a nonsense word Toady made up. I should've known better!

Their "stumble bumblings" (see their description or the wiki) likely derive from one of the word's meanings: "To roll about in walking; to go with an unsteady gait."

It gets better, because there is another meaning. In fact, in the OED (1989, at least), it's the primary definition. "To be qualmish; to feel nausea." This, of course, implies either that they are rolling about unsteadily, vomiting adorably all over your map (but luckily are too small to create significant puddles of it); that they are literally sickeningly cute; or both (which is most likely in my opinion).

...now, I can't help but feel a little grossed out every time I notice one.
