Because when you cut off your enemy's hand, clearly the next thing you want to do is cut off the rest of that arm...

Shortroads progresses well. 3 female and 1 male unicorn tame in the herd now. Whilst the herd is being grown the dwarves are milking the current ones. making for some very expensive cheese!

An ambush attacked a miner. he faced down the five lashers. Parrying and dodging every blow that came his way. Responding by destroying the lead goblins spine and scaring the rest off as a result. Impressive miner indeed.

A Roc attacked the fort. but was shot out of the air and pincushioned by the forts marksdwarves. making for hundreds of meat. Would have been good to catch it but there was just no way with the forts current state.  But more cages are being set up to catch future flyers. We also caught a giant cave spider so will look into webbing cages to catch flyers easier.

The dwarves now number 137. 20 or so children and babies. Apart from one axedwarf tantrum that has been resolved from lack of clothes. The fort seems happy and content. Once the well is established down in the first cavern and the final surface crop farms roofs are done. There will only be one entrance on foot into the fort.

A second load of steel has been imported from the mountainhomes and most of a suit of steel armour for my militia commander. Udib Onulontak Now has a suit of steel armour bar a copper helmet he has to make do with for now. And a steel axe and unicorn leather cloak. The marksdwarves squad are all decently skilled immigrants and have been fully kitted out. The melee unit lead by Udib has a piecemeal mix of imported and looted gear apart from some steel weapons imported and made from imported bars. There is enough to offer at least a weapon and some protection for most of the squad though whilst steel imports slowly trickle in.

Only death so far was a failed mood from a weaponsmith before an anvil was imported. The miners continue digging out new quarters that will eventually be one for every dwarf 3x5 in size. Also there are multiple natural passages leading from cavern 1 into cavern 2. An expedition is going to be mounted once some more weapon traps have been lain in the entrance halls.

Relicshield, pop. 73, Winter of 328 (Year 77)

Rith II Crescenttours was released from the kindergarten burrow when he was struck with a strange mood.  He created an artifact alpaca bone cage, but he was never reassigned to the burrow.  Loving a good thrill, the child ran immediately for the outdoors, only to come face to face with a goblin snatcher.  The goblin stabbed him in the belly hard enough to pierce a kidney.  Luckily, there were soldiers on duty nearby who quickly removed the threat.  Despite the grievous wound, Rith II didn't pass out from the pain and walked all the way to the hospital on his own!  A future in the military is likely.

The elvish caravan, the second to visit Martyrtrumpets, was ambushed on its way home by a squad of marksgobs led by a lasher. The fort's military is still under-trained and under-equipped.  Well the trading depot is in a kind of airlock thingy so the gobs had no way into the fort. I thought I'd just wait for them to get bored and go away so I could reclaim the loot I sold to the elves. And then came along the summer migrants. Now I'm busy making coffins and slabs, trying to cheer up the surviving immigrants, and trying to find the aquifer so I have a water source for a hospital.

A mother and child burned to death breaching the magma sea (which I thought I had handled, turns out a gabbro door will burn away when open)

Sounds like you forgot to use a magma-safe mechanism. Otherwise, it would have to be be a masterwork thing.

Edit: While I'm here, a little update on Heartmines. Edzul, a lone, unarmored hunter happened to be chasing down a dingo when a Vile Force of Darkness arrived and a goblin crossbow squad spawned in front of him. I though he was a goner for sure, but he routed the entire squad by shooting the leader in the legs. The goblins fled without firing a single shot.

I thought of that after I posted. Oh well. I'm at that point where a couple useless morons and their tattered clothes won't be missed.

Another thing: A while ago I elected some problematic vampire as the baron. Well, he went crazy and now he's not on the noble's list anymore. Though alive, he's always on break and listed as struck by melancholy. Is there a way to get myself re-duked? I thought the liaison said something about upgrading my position when he was just by.

Forgot to mention, an elven ambush sprang up right on top of the dwarven caravan. The previously mentioned liaison broke through and got to the fort, but the carts and merchant either died or fled. Same with the elves. I made out with some golems and a couple bullet turrets, as well as a few leatherwing bats and boozebelly goats. Soon there will be leather and chitin clothes for everyone! The beetle farm still pumps out numbers. The moleweasels breed like flies. There's really no reason to interact with the outside world beyond trading away garbage and getting the mountainhome a report. Population is at ~218, almost 9th year at KindleHelms. Still need to learn macros or something because I'm putting off the remodeling project. There's just so much to designate...

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow dwarf is either a fool or a coward. Whoever can not take care of themself without that law is both. For a wounded dwarf shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

At least you didn't turn what was supposed to be a big featureless square quarry into.... this.

I'm still very confused how you got there.  You went from a giant square to... well... a very intricate and pretty spiderweb design.  Do you remember eating raw fish?

I have not. And for the record I would have made it bigger but I ran out of space going northward.

Grr, my jeweller just got killed by a freak bug, it seems:
construct support on the highest map-level - instant cave-in of all neighbouring floor??? At least that's what appeared to happen. I have no bloody idea where this one came from, just that it's utterly stupid and massively aggravating because that single jeweller represented 5% of my entire workforce. I'd savescum this bullshit away without hesitation if it wouldn't cost me 3 seasons of hard work.

I don't know, I would rather have inspiration hit me like that than have a normal boring quarry.  It's a really pretty design and it would make a beautiful amulet.

As for Fishmine, my fort is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by nearly going into a tantrum spiral over clothing.  Beautiful.  The only casualties were a legendary planter and miner, the planter becoming melancholic and the miner going stark raving mad.  I nearly saw a real tantrum when the planter threw a fit but it only lasted a few seconds before she calmed down.  Oh well.  Now several dwarves are bordering on unhappy because of the deaths and the aforementioned clothing problem.  Everyone seems to be sporting better duds now though, so it's a little less extreme.  I need to keep mass producing dresses and shoes though (and I need to keep dumping all of the old garments they throw on the floor).  It's a battle, the battle against old socks!

I need to find some real FUN.  ._.

Even that he was attacked unarmed at his arrival.
Even that he lost wife and son.
Even that he received injury after flipping the bird to goblins in battle.
Even that he saw fist fights in the hospital.
Even that he heard diplomat brawling with berserker in the mist generator tub.
Even that he knew a second siege had fallen upon the countryside in the presence of caravans.
Here stands proof that you should not always seal the gates in time of need.

One of my miners throws a tantrum and grabbed a dog before shaking it around.  He should be glad the dog wasn't hurt and decided not to retaliate.  I don't know why he's the only unhappy dwarf too.  He claimed the mayor's room since the Queen is also the Mayor so he has one of the best bedrooms in the fortress and eats lavish meals all day.  Yeah, it sucks to be running around nude, but none of his relatives went nuts and died recently.  ::)

Also, my butcher got hit with a few mood and made a platinum mug.  Nothing too interesting, but it's called "The Stasis of Seizures", which I think is pretty cool.  I thought the butcher would make something really morbid, so I guess the cup was better than I expected.  Not very useful, but I like artifacts of any sort.

There's a reason dorfs are in love with socks.  They just can't stand being nekkid.
