I almost let a spoiled child perish for his whining, but I'm glad I spared him.
NobleFort has everything a fancy mood could want. Bars, lots. Blocks, plenty. Bones, yep. Wood, sure. Cut Gems, of course. Rough Gems, donated from MigrantFort. Silk, waiting. Fiber, of course. But when I saw he was stuck, the "stacked cloth" meant he wanted yarn.
I eventually gave him yarn. In return, he made a Horse Bone Amulet. But on the amulet is some blue peafoul leather in the shape of a vampire queen named Homura BodiceSalves.
Quakeswallowed will get a vampire yet !
Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have killed that clothier...

A busy Autumn in Relicblaze.

A group of migrants brought the population up to seventy.  On the plus side the veteran fighters now include two master marksdwarves and four legendary melee dwarves.  However, armor is in short supply beyond using copper (shudder).  They are getting a mix of bronze and iron, and just mail and leggings for now.  And I just noticed that if given his druthers a legendary axe dwarf would rather use a steel short sword than a copper battle axe.

While clearing trees on the south end of the embark some woodcutters were surprised by the appearance of a minotaur.  (Famed dwarf killers in this world - the previous fort killed 9-10 minotaurs who were all credited with having killed at least one dwarf.)  The woodcutters fled before the beast and the minotaur was intercepted to the east of the fortress by the melee unit while a marksdwarf started taking pot shots from the Keep's upper floor.  Things started well with the minotaur getting hit twice hard by a hammer and a mace dwarf and suffering broken bones.  However, with an uninjured arm it grabbed the hammer dwarf in a wrestling hold and broke his ankle.  The minotaur passed out from pain shortly after and was pounded into oblivion.

The wounded dwarf was carried into the newly designated hospital and treated rapidly and effectively.  A clean break and it was sutured and splinted without further incident.  (And the dwarf was walking without a crutch by the end of the season.)

The Mountainhomes caravan arrived on schedule and brought a much needed shipment of goods.  Primarily a supply of iron ore and some additional armor and weapons to add to the fort's limited supply.  The melee troops should get steel weapons and some pieces of steel armor by the end of the winter.

Goblins penetrated the outer defenses late in the season.  No civilian casualties, but the livestock got chased around and a adolescent reindeer bull was slain.  The goblins were counterattacked near the Keep Gate.  The fort's dogs and even a hunting trained Helmet Snake* joined in the assault.  The goblin ambush squad was completely annihilated as well as two goblin snatchers caught within the ditch.  A second goblin group appeared outside the ditch and was driven off by the marksdwarves.

* - The combat report showed the snake getting multiple attacks in.  Many were deflected by armor, but at least 4-5 successful bites were made, and two of them injected venom.  The snake was also the only casualty as it was stabbed in the tail and incapacitated.

The water issue has been addressed for now.  Magma was used to melt a section of the stream twice and the water was drawn off via a floodgate into a cistern that is accessible by a well.  Not ideal, but functional for medical and bathing needs.

The basic residence and dining halls have been completed and partially furnished.  Operations are now concentrating on improving the fort's defensive structures and gathering equipment for properly equipping the current militia squads plus stockpiling for a militia expansion to start training new soldiers.

My new militia commander, Goden, a siege operator with macedwarf experience before he migrated, attacked with a sword wielding recruit. Osel flew out of reach until the recruit managed to cut open one of his wings, and then he stayed on the ground. Goden and the recruit then proceeded to destroy Osel while he just kept breathing his worthless gas. After a while a recruit with a spear joined in, and helped reduce the forgotten beast to a bloody pulp.

It's fun reading back over combat logs for big monster fights when dwarves are in the thick of it.  You can just imagine the teamwork involved as they take the thing down.

I love when dwarves leave the hospital good as new :D!

So, mountainhome and Queen, I leave you with this regard:

Do not return to Goldsquash.  It is haunted.  And if I can get my corpse into the river and float it anywhere near the mountainhome, I will personally come to haunt you until the end of your days, my ever wise and loving queen.

-Erush Egdothgeshud, leader of Goldsquash, soon to be sacraficed to Armok's bloody grace.

That was a great read.  Are you going to reclaim the site?

No, I've left it behind.  I did so much damage trying to break the aquifer that I went after another site with one and decided to be less experimental with it until I've got a better handle on it, and it still took two tries because I screwed up how many layers there were where I was working on.  I'm now through the Aquifer into the rock however, found a ton of ore, and am being very careful to not accidentally flood out my lower areas from above.  I don't usually take sites with so little wood, though, so that was an interesting challenge... as was forgetting to bring cats for easy bone material.

The walls are almost up and I'm prepping the above ground hunter/woodcutter airlock soonish, then I'll prep another shaft for a cavern dive, as I don't want my exploration shafts attached to the fortress proper.  I want to be able to drill to magma without any possibilty of my civvies getting assaulted by the local FB population, or GCS.  My last few forts have been significant screw ups, so I'm trying to be cautious with this one.

I just got my first major migration and I've just OCD'd my still setup so that each and every still plant has its own stockpile so if I run low of a particular one I can aim my brewer at something.  My trade goods have lacked heavily so we're pretty much self sufficient, but I'm wicked low on everything in the cloth making industry due to some errors in judgement and letting the pig tails rot, so no seeds.  No military to speak of yet but I'm only at 30 dwarves, so I'm not overly concerned.  Oh, yeah, and some nutjob decided he just desperately needed a metal bar to make a magnacite ring, the jackass, so emergency furnaces were built long before we got to the magma to prep some bars for him.  Wasn't even a worthy mood, he was just possessed so nothing useful out of that at all.

Edit: Oh, I should mention my lemonade... the failed aquifer drill has turned into my only watersource on the map (it's close to desert, no river), so it's got a bunch of wells stuffed in the holes.  :)  Saved me a bit when the booze and food ran dry.  Was a tough start, but they're through it now.  Getting up to cruising speed.

fort Dieoars and The Unseen Trumpets are doing well, going into the third year.
I did a little modding to tame and breed some of the cave critters I've caught (trolls, blind cave ogres, the crundle eggs haven't hatched yet), and I'm looking forward to having a menagerie of war beasts.
I embarked near a tower, and I had all but forgotten about it until a couple of skeletons on the surface started scaring my treecutters. they were easily dispatched, and I haven't seen any more undead or the necromancer, but it sure made me reconsider the huge pile of refuse right outside the fort.

the first child born in the fort has "in a constant state of infernal rage" in her personality. her name is Tun Spiralboot and she will become the mightiest warrior The Amber Door has ever seen.

I wonder if tame trolls equip weapons?  That's a pretty cool kid you've got there.  I've never seen that particular trait level before!

They could use weapons if they got their hands on them (such as grappling them out of someone's hands) but usually they're technically pets used in the same role as say a war dingo and won't bring their own into battle.

Two years ago a giant capybara slaughtered the Countess's husband while he valiantly defended humans from the elven hoards. Now the entrances have been sealed ever since and our honored leader has ordered a complete reformation of the army. Thikut Lalthikut, who from here shall be referred to as "THE IDIOT!!!" managed to find "spoilers."

A new DF, a new world.

Seeking adventure and land for expansion, my dwarves sent a naval expedition over the ocean, grounding themselves up a beach, far from the waves. Their mission? The Alliance of Order!

Those tall ones have been waging a long war of attrition against those accursed greenskins in the south. Protected by the evil lands of Chaos, the humans have fought a long virgil to contain the goblins from venturing overseas with much success.

Our cvilisation has long known peace, and respects such valour. We too will join in the long guard. Sailing past the elven coast, the dwarves found a convinent hillock to dig into, right on the edge of the accursed grasslands. To watch the deserted western shore, lest the goblins take to water and wage war across the sea.

The first year soon prove perilous for our outpost. Hit by a ravenous minotaur, anxious to seek wealth, the elven caravan was mauled before our dwarven guards sallied forth(eh? We just sat back and let that monster wail on that cow, before you got us so drunk on wine we stumbled out the gate with our axes......). Our brave human allies turned aside the goblin ambushes but even their venture for profit was turned back at the hands of our evil foes.(You meant we let the gobbos smack them and then went in to loot the corpses.)

Alas for our longbeard...... A veteran soldier of our dwarven army, fallen in his prime when he tried to stop a Goblin Master thief from snatching away our future(You mean that git jumped on that thief while stumbling for the entrance and dinna know better than to run away....)
We entombed him(placed his rotting carcass when we cannae stand the smell) and now eagerly await our second dwarven liason, here to present us with our new marching orders no doubt.(Heh, if he gets past our front door, it be a miracle.)

I just embarked on my first freezing biome. Luckily there's a volcano!

The world had an interesting history, with lots of civilizations. War was extremely common. Even though the current age is called The Golden Age, there are many battles and some civilizations have been completely wiped out.

Of the four dwarven civilizations, I picked The Red Canyons, the only one without a war against humans or elves.

When I embarked, I chose the right dwarf labors, but I completely forgot about supplies and animals!
I embarked in an interesting place, a freezing mountain with a volcano on top. Of course, the stupid dwarves embarked right on the edge of it.

I thought I was trapped, so I dug downward from the edge. Big mistake. The lava from the volcano spewed out of the hole, right down the landscape burning the few things alive in the surface.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I found out that on the other side of the volcano, there was a safe passage to a hilltop. *facepalm*

I moved my dwarves and supplies there, and dug down to create a little hole to live in for the moment.
Even though the embark screen said there was an aquifer, I didn't find one.

Also, the dwarves struck a vein of precious fire opals! This will be useful in trading for wood and plants.

More updates soon on the fortress: Flagcloak!

A new settlement called Shortroads. This time I have found unicorns and have currently tamed a a male and 2 females in the forts second year. Waiting for foals in the spring of year 3. The start of a great ivory and food industry begins!

Sadly no deep or shallow metal deposits. But enough has been imported in basic weapons via trading limestone crafts and mechanisms with traders for what can't be sourced locally. Which is thankfully in abundance. 5 solid layers of limestone below 2-3 soil/sand layers. 76 dwarves so far in autumn of year three. with the most talent melee and ranged immigrants being drafted and trained to form the first squads of military for defense. Farming is really starting to take off. With lavish meals in abundance and a variety of surface and cave plant based alcohol. With plans for unicorn lavish meals once the herd has grown. Plus bees are available for eventual mead making. These temperate plains are very bountiful.

Year one and two was mostly spent prepping and carving our the workshop and main entrance area plus farms and the beginnings of the warehouses and first dining hall. The dwarves share a cramped dormitory but once the barracks are done. Personal housing is on it's way.

Otherwise I have caught some barn owls and weasels for the animal handlers to also practice on when not working with the secrets to taming unicorns better. Traps and defenses being fitted to the main hall / entrance to the settlement as wealth production is going to soon take off big time. Miners also working on ramp road down to the caverns to establish a small outpost there.

!! Yes !!
Finally have a vampire somewhere in Quakeswallowed. And the way I noticed it was pleasing, much better than the last time
(the last vampire I had ended the RabbitHut in my sig...)

I was cleaning up loose ends on 3 nobles: the Baroness, the HorseBracelet child
And Uzuki, the only surviving son of an O7 mother. Uzuki's brother was snatched, and the father went depressed in a midlife crisis.

I went looking for Uzuki via the mother's relationship screen. Couldn't find her today. Huh. I comb the deceased list and "Uzuki Missing". Huh. I zoom to my corpse stockpile and there he was (though still missing). Somebody hauled him to the corpse stockpile and didn't report him dead. I send the squad out and finally get the message I've been waiting for all along: drained of blood.

Time for testing.

Fortressbowel, pop 247, year 17

The human caravan was stripped of all its goods in exchange for 2 copper serrated discs.

The dwarf Lorbam Geshudrul has become a macelord.

The mayor Ablel Flagsalve continues with her reckless quest to have the largest brood in the fortress, giving birth to her 9th child.
