SteelHold's obsidian farm failed and is irreclaimable. To compensate, we have killed the elven merchants at our doorstep. May the first great war of this land be in our favor, and the blood of our timeless enemies please Armok!

The Forgotten Beast Careme Theyiseweri has come!  An enormous beakless grouse.  It has two broad horns and it has a bloated body.  Its dark chestnut feathers are patchy.  Beware its fire!

Good thing fire-breathing Forgotten Beasts aren't immune to dragonfire :D.

Ah, the Square Towers was apparently the name of my little band of dwarves.  The place is called Goldsquash, which is what I thought it was. :)

We've created a lovely artifact statue of the founding of Goldsquash in weasel bone that threatens with spikes of quartz with an image... in weasel bone... of the founding... on the statue commemorating the founding... well, alright then.

It's in the main dirt dining room for now.  Everyone can have a nice gander at it.  Hopefully it'll keep the insanity down while I. Still. Penetrate. The. Aquifer.

The aquifer is... abnormal.  It's got a LOT of seams running through it, including a huge layer of gypsum which threw me off as to the depth of this thing.  One of my double slits couldn't work because I couldn't get to another aquifer block on the other side of the stairway.  It's taking a bit of manipulation to get this stairway drilled.  I did, however, manage to mine out a nice seam of the coal in the gypsum layer before I ran into aquifers on all sides.  Eventually, I'm going to take an area of this 5x5 embark and strip mine the damned thing for surface metals and coal.

It would appear most, if not all, of my sedimentary seams are in aquifer levels.  I dug too deep, and instead of finding Balrog, he apparently drowned in this thing.  I'm currently working out a dual windmill power system to run power deep into the stairway.  I've modified the double slit slightly to allow for an access stairway.  It's getting wet and messy down there, but it's keeping me occupied, anyway.

Goldsquash's pottery is coming along nicely, if slowly.  Our spring migration brought 21 people with them, and a few of them got relegated to 'Hauler', basically meaning they'll be sucked into whatever job I eventually decide I want a dwarf for.  Until then they can stand around being useless while I dig for stone.  Cookie and Brewski have been wrangled into their new jobs, leaving the farmers doing what they do best... farm.  We've got a lot of food thanks to our Quarry Bushes and plenty of booze now.  We are, however, still !@#@!#!!!! defenseless.  I should fix that.  At the least I need to arm the citizens.  There's goblins and humans out there... somewhere.  No elves, though, from the embark screen.

Minedshadow, est. 147. Late summer, Year 170, pop ~213 (still haven't figured an accurate census due to that bug... 'tis my best guest right now)

Three deaths from old age this year, one mason, a spinner, and a tailor. So, some of the peasantry have found themselves with nicer, less haul-intensive jobs. There was much rejoicing. The current project is a control-post for the ever-growing number of gate-systems. The dwarves recently completed some other upgrades to the FB silk farm, including isolated kill-rooms should it become necessary to dispose of the silk-producing FBs, with pit-in access above (for feeding, entertainment, science;). The current project sprang from that, and in a sense is more of an extension to the original project. It also will involve eventually "breaching containment" at some point, as the outermost gates can't be re-linked to other levers without having to open them first. Thankfully both the fortress guard and militia squads are highly trained at this point. And both gates force any hostiles to pass through quite a gauntlet of traps and timed upright spear arrays. Those gates will be the last to be re-linked, after the other security points have been linked to the bunker/control room.

Also, during final construction, the dwarves tested one of the kill-rooms by pitting Usu in. The ice-click beetle survived for maybe 20 cycles of the 3x3 10xUpright steel spears driven by manual lever. Usu's abdomen and a puddle of water are all that's left. There's also two other FBs that've shown up in the caverns below. They seem rather uninteresting, so they can stay down there until it's time to work on the outer bulwark gate. Then they'll have to be dealt with. The silk-collection area may also see a future upgrade, for luring other FBs into webbed cage traps. Or at least to spikey-death.

An unskilled dwarf recently created this, the third most valuable artifact in the fortress:

Nothing incredibly exciting or unusual, except that the dwarf who created it is two years old. He's like a bone-carving Mozart, only younger, with a fuller beard and a greater interest in killing elves.

One of my adult dwarfs got a mood. I was briefly excited, because i haven't had an adult mood in quite some time (well, when you have 22 adults, after a while there are few left for any moods and the 44 children keep hogging the attention with their _awesome_ pitchblende drums and similar garbage). But unfortunately, i had completely overlooked him and never gave him experience for a useful moodable skill, so he claimed a crafter's workshop and demanded - shells. On a frozen volcano. I decided the fort needed some more war dogs and found the corner with the crafts shop was a good training location...

Despite their minuscule size (not patched, so they must've been the size of cavies), not one of the dozen war dogs came to harm and they kept the berserk farmer occupied with 'breaks the grip of the war dog's teeth' until the two militarydwarfs arrived, shot him full of bolts and then stomped on his face.
The farmer was posthumously judged to be some kind of evil infiltrator, or he wouldn't have demanded, to the point of breaking his brain over it, a material unknown to our fortress. The reaction of the widow to his passing (she confessed to be 'ecstatic' about it) further strengthened suspicions. It was decided that, to cleanse his spirit, his body should not be interred in the fortress but rather treated with a more dwarvenly substance in plentiful supply on the site. I.e., it was cremated in magma.

yet another child fell victim to overcrowding ramps. this one got his head smashed into an obstacle. he will be missed.

i'm just worried that a tantrum spiral might happen. so far none of my dwarves are miserable yet.

the dagger traps i installed on the second cavern entrance have been surprisingly deadly. i originally built them for anaesthetics with masterwork mechanisms, but they have killed three rutherers so far. apprarently, one hit knocks the rutherers unconscious while the spinning blades slowly cut it to death. death by a thousand cuts, truly a horrible way to go.

The nearby human kingdom sent in their diplomat. Said diplomat was a skinless, poison spewing lizard demon which preferred to spend her time wallowing within the nearby pond when not discussing diplomatic matters. Did I mention that it turned into winter, when said diplomat was still in the pond?

Heheh, yeah they're a lot of fun :).  I lost 61 dwarves recently, but the dragons are definitely one of the reasons I won't be hitting the "abandon" button anytime soon.

***

Relicshield, pop. 75, Autumn of 325 (Year 74)

The Evils of Spray returned in force, hoping to take advantage of the Mountainhome's weakened state.  The goblins were sorely disappointed.  One untrained reservist was killed in battle, but the invaders were crushed and scattered.

Meng the dragon trainer survived the loss of his left leg due to the ghost attack.  Despite hobbling on crutches, he still commands the respect of Relicshield's dragons.  All four adults are now masterfully trained.

25 forgotten beasts have thus far failed to breach the Mountainhome's defenses. The majority of them have been blasted away by dragonfire, but twice a twisted creature so horrifying arrived that the dragon hatchlings cowered in fear and refused to attack.  The hatchlings were brought back to the Dragon Den on the surface.  As expected, the adult dragons are far more aggressive, so now Slusa and Istrath guard the second cavern's entrance.

Well, I've had some fun. Not !!fun!! though. Experienced a series of elven ambushes this year, the socks of around 80 invaders have kept the refuse workers busy. Breached the third cavern layer, found a webbing FB and "spoilers"

I've never gotten to see  one of those structures... Most I got to see was the three Spire beneath Spearbreakers.

i realized what's causing all the reports: hatch covers. apparently after one closes, the momentum propels a dwarf into an obstacle. normally deflected by cloaks, hatch covers have claimed two lives already.

i have decided to phase hatch covers out due to overwhelming injuries and possible death. the risk of a tantrum spiral is not worth medical experience. even so, reports from hatch covers either result in no injury due to the shot being deflected, or instant death due to headshots.

I once lost a fort to flying zombified bugbats, it's just another reason why I love the third cavern layer.
