I- I just ran out of stone.

I believed that this wouldn't be possible.
There's always more deep to dig, and obsidian's a thing.

2 hammerdwarf husks and sworddwarf husk are partying with other living creatures around my fortress on lying on sea beach...

My dwarves were sent to kill husk weasel, but somehow they managed to get infected (probably due to lack of gloves) and they started to hunt everything what is alive, fortunately other dwarves were in fortress, so I just closed gate.

I got part of the mechants in the fortress, but I unfortunately missed trading, so I didn't get booze, which I need.
I have some food and water, but I must wait to spring to have seeds planted. Dwarves are in good mood.

The deathtrap warm welcome device is complete. Several years of construction, probably a thousand blocks, around two hundred grates, sixty mechanisms and no deaths related to the trap. Well, no important deaths.
This magma-dropping entrance corridor will automatically annhiliate sieges and ambushes, without even needing my input at any stage. It will drop the goblinite in the depths of the fortress and burn everything else.
The fortress lies at the crossroads of an evil, good and neutral biome, with the evil one having silver barbs (black dye!) and thrall clouds. I don't think even a thralled siege can defeat me now.
I think this is the part where I should laugh like a maniac and proclaim myself greater than the gods themselves. But I won't. The HFS with their fortress remain...

The dwarfs of Nilroder, 'Hammerbald', have finished their major building job: a tower reaching from the depth of the canyon (10 levels below the plateau) all the way up to the top of the map, 21 levels above. I had originally planned to base it entirely on wood, but eventually used other 'surface-ish' materials, to wit ice, green glass and earthenware (the latter two by sending stuff 120 levels down to the magma workshops). The stocks listing counts just under 5000 used blocks, of which an estimated 4800 are used in the building, as well as 750 lumps of ice. At ~5500 building material, it's still not particularly large.

In the last push, i enabled masonry on just about everyone - the ice sources are a good way away and any distraction can completely gut the ice building season. Of course, i didn't pay proper attention to a child who got moody. It must have missed bones or logs - just after the tower was declared finished, she went berserk (and was instantly shot by caravan guards); looking at the workshop, she actually managed to collect most of what she needed, only one or two items were missing. Would only have been a stone craft, though.

The sidequest of crosstraining marksdwarfs was also quite successful - they all ended up legendary hammerdwarfs with expert+ shield user and dodger. The single dedicated hammerdwarf was the slowest to advance, but that was mainly a size problem, he'd get knocked over in sparring all the time, gaining much reduced combat experience. I had also ramped up beekeeping to the effective max of fourty hives, which ended up providing almost half of all the booze in the fort. I didn't have dedicated beekeepers but simply enabled the labour on five of my beards, which worked satisfactorily; i think there were one or two stuck beekeepers in twenty years.

As a nice parting gift, a bonecarver and a trader decided to marry and throw a party which is attended by 37 of 73 fort inhabitants.

Copperways, with its 4 members, had to open the doors to let the liason in/out so we could get some migrants from the homeland.  On the way out, another goblin ambush hit us.  The majority of the ambush got caught in cage traps, but we're not sure if the Liason made it away safely.

We resealed Copperway's walls, but one goblin got in and was terrorizing our flocks.  He also got the Ram, so we're going to have to get a new one if we want more sheep.  However, I gotta give points to my miner.

She's missing a leg, and her other foot is 'dented'.  Badly damaged from an injury during the riots of 259, which we're still creating coffins for and some child is still missing.  This goblin made a bad assumption that a one legged miner was easy pray.  The first strike the goblin tried got parried, and Morul proceeded to rip off the goblin's arm in a single swing.  The goblin ran back to the upstairs, and continued to harass the flocks.

Morul had enough of that.  She left the safety of the caverns, tracked down the goblin, and proceeded to drop him like a sack of miasma.  Her next swing ripped into the side of his chest, shattering ribs and tearing open his lungs.  Morul was still pissed.  In the next swing after the goblin fell, she raised her pick back like a golf club and proceeded to use its head like a golf ball, tearing it from its body and sending it flying.

Morul, you get the first legendary bedroom, I promise.  If we ever get some migrants in here.

Yet another update on my fortress entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Refuse stockpile moved to the room behind the entrance, the one with the little hole.

A whole big new room for marksdwarves and more shooting space. Another floor level. (tons of blocks needed)

Just as I finished the improvements an army of giant keas and other birds arrived. The first two marksdwarves shot down two of them.

They managed to kill a kid, but he was useless anyway. My two squads of melee dwarves proved themselves valuable again, killing most of the birds. My cage traps caught  a giant kea and a giant peach-faced lovebird.

I'm having this fantastic idea of constructing an arena where they will fight against eachother.

My fortress is full of babies! Literally!

I have a horde of dragonmen and tigermen (both of the wild variety) I bought from the elves, cobalds, and tigermen traders, and they've been breeding like mad. I also have some lesser dragons, avalai and pangolins about. I butchered all my pigs; the dragons and pangolins can supply the meat and the avalai the milk.

But those damn tigermen, man. The dragonmen are usually born with fairly low social skills, but those tigermen seem to be born with skilled-proficient in many social skills, literally milliseconds after their birth. Frankly, it scares me. I think it's because they're usually born twins, while most of the dragonman welps from the sentient caste are born without siblings. I didn't stop to study the ones born of the non-sentient egg-laying slave caste before chucking them in another room.

Butchery of all these critters has gone smoothly despite being a massive pain in the ass to deal with the meat from the sentient ones. The dwarves won't even stockpile it, so I had to move the butcher's shop outside by the refuse stockpile so they don't leave it sitting underground until it starts to rot and make everyone pissy. I have way too much food now, though.

In other news, I've run out of iron. I'll have to mine out more. Gold and copper are in good supply just because I've been digging around where they're abundant and haven't been forging armor from them. I really need to get steel production going, though.

Soon, however, I will be pouring magma on the any merchants I don't want to deal with. I just need to finish the drainage system...

[An excerpt from a medal request sent to the general of Alekmoldath from Fikodlulor in the winter of 252]
"...The Earthen Heavens found themselves woefully unprepared, the quartermaster having failed to issue the correct ammunition. Being devoted to their duty, they still assumed their assigned positions on the walls. Their commander, the honourable Sakzul Katerush, whom I am sure you know, was hit by several arrows and couldn't issue orders because of a throat injury. The subject of this missive, the elite marksdwarf Edem Eddudoddom, seized control of the situation before it became too dire. She ordered the lower gates opened, and once they came down, she rushed outside in a truly superdwarven rage. She charged the first of the kobolds and, despite having no training in close-quarters combat whatsoever, killed him with a single blow to the skull. Before the advantage of surprise could be lost, she fell upon a second attacker, breaking her arms, with which the wretch tried to defend herself, and finally bashing her head in. The third attacker momentarily surprised her, inflicting a cut on her arm, but was dealt with by Fikodlulor's other elite marksdwarf, Oddom Becorzuglar, who had managed to acquire ammunition for himself before the raid. I awarded the man a Commendation for Valour, and I highly recommend him for the Crossbows Royale - he has an astounding amount of composure.
The valiant Edem Eddudoddom then pursued one of the remaining raiders, who had decided to turn tail and run. In the course of her pursuit she was dishonourably ambushed by another enemy combatant, whom she threw aside in her fury, shattering her skull upon the ground. She then closed in with the villain whom she had been pursuing, and engaged him in combat, evading all of his blows save a slash to the right upper leg. She left him broken on the ground, and the fortress was saved.
In the light of all these events, it is my wish that the the marksdwarf Edem Eddudoddom be awarded the Brazen Star of Alekmoldath [A complex word, best translated into English as "The Humorous Avalanches", "humorous" bearing the overtones of mocking an easily defeated enemy, and "avalanche" being a local metaphor for a victory easily won. The form of the plural is reserved for regularly occurring events - therefore, the name can be interpreted as "We Win Easily All the Time".]. I trust that you will submit the proper request to His Majesty the King.
Obsidian 23, Tathurilral, Fikodlulor. MKL1000Y [An abbreviation commonly used in military reports of that period, meaning "May the King Live a Thousand Years"]"

[A note attached to the report]
Sakzul died of his injuries later. Onget, forgive me. There was nothing I could do. I hope I get recalled soon, or that you come to pay me a visit - I cannot bear to put all of it in writing, and by Gasas [A deity of speech] I need to tell someone, and Ral did not know him as you did. Please.

One of my Marksdwarves lost a foot while tangling with a werewolf. It grew back a short while later when he transformed himself, and to my surprise didn't immediately try to eviscerate the 5 other Marksdwarves he was standing with and no one seemed to pay any attention. Wondering how he would do I sent him to ask the group of Orcs that had recently started roasting hotdogs on the maps edge to move along. The first Orc he asked seemed a little cranky, or maybe he was sick, but he charged when my Dwarf tried to get his attention with a few bolts. To make up for the misunderstanding he was given a massage via crossbow. His friends didn't seem to mind much and just hung out by their fire until the dwarf had finished. After that things didn't go so great for the dwarf, although he did start a chain reaction of werewolf transformations, that cleared the camp quite nicely, before getting an arrow in the face.

Not much has happened in the months since then, although my doctors are finally getting some work. Another archer decided to give an Orc a hug and may lose the use of both of his arms, while a Nurse and her baby both survived an 8 level fall in after a minor construction mishap.

I've almost finished my drowning pit as well, just need to add a few dodge traps on the upper level. 11x11 8 level pit with a walkway around the side that fills with water in about 3 ticks. Now I just need to make one with magma for the elven caravans...

After a long while of not playing, I've decided to get back into DF. Genned up a new world, chose an embark and got to work. So far I've got some temporary workshops and homes carved up, and am working on carving out a proper fortress. The main noticeable thing about this site so far is that there is iron ore freaking everywhere. Veins of hematite and limonite keep poking out of the sides of hills, and I keep stumbling on veins while digging. There's also plenty of chalk so it looks like Wounddrinks will have a nice steel industry.

One one my dwarves just got beat up by a couple of...Kea's before being rescued by a miner militia. After recovering he ran into a kobold thief who stabbed him in the tongue with a copper dagger, bruising the flesh. Shortly after he died from infection. Guess he was fated to die an embarrassing death.

Wow, those gators left alot of materials. It's summer now and the first Vault Dweller to reach legendary ina skill was our metallurgist Alfosno. He's a legendary bone carver now.

Unfortunately, the start of summer came, the month leading up to it being nothing but dust storms and rain. And while we have food and water, even if it's a little irradiated, we have little living space and only some basic accomodations for a tiny group, the whole of Spring being spent on building a hydroplant (read;pretty much just a grinding mill) to process our grain crops when we get around to planting some.

Cindy was laid to rest not long after her death, her coffin being made from bent up scrap. At least she's out of sight and out of mind now, save a headstone.

It's been a while since I've played.  It's now summer of the second year.

A dorf got a block to the head deconstructing a stairway, which shows up in the combat log as "The engraver's head has been caught in a cloud of boiling magma! x5"

"Kubuk Rirnolzefon, Trader (Friendly)" showed up with spring's migrant wave.  I keep waiting for her to turn into a werecreature, but the full moon has come and gone with nary a sign of scale, claw, fur or feather.  Maybe an outcast accidentally immigrated?

I was introducing Dwarf Fortress to my cousins today and they seem to really enjoy it.  As I helped both of them set up their first fortress, I saw that one of them already had combat reports.  I flipped them open to introduce combat to my cousin and promptly discovered that three of the reports involved the expedition leader, a miner, and one of our tame wardogs from embark.  Apparently one of the wardogs randomly attacked both the expedition leader and the miner.  The miner had a toe broken and slashed open by the dog's vicious bite and the expedition leader's arm had been bruised as well.  Neither of the two dwarves did anything to defend themselves, so to prevent the situation from worsening, I had both wardogs moved outside.  My theory is that since all the dwarves and the dogs had been concentrated into a small meeting area, the dog had become frustrated and lashed out.  Both my cousin and I were shocked and amused by this event, especially after the miner walked it off and went to dig out a room I designated.

Sadly my cousin's PC reset because there was a one second power outage so the save was lost, but it was definitely fun all the same.
