Broke into the volcano, and have the magma channel slowly seeping in. Unfortunately, casualties from the various attacks have started a tantrum spiral. It hasn't hit critical mass, but several children have gone berserk nonetheless.

Of course, I probably wouldn't have been in this mess if I'd bothered to give the dwarves weapons arleady. Come on, magma! Seep! Seep! Seep! Seep in so I can get my magma forges ready!

No, wait... my river is full of wild boars. That's what I wanted to say.

There are 20 of them, steadily multiplying, and I have no idea how to get them out, since the river is in a canyon without direct access for marksdwarves. I'll probably obsidianize the whole thing. They're not really bad, but something about amphibian boars annoys me and everytime I get a message about another one being born, I search for new ways to get rid of them.


In other news, I finally got magma from -30z to +6z. It comes rather slowly, because I didn't find a good access point to the magma sea, but it's enough for some metal industry, a magma moat, a rapid execution device and a short burst of pressurized magma that can cover the main entrance in a matter of seconds. I wanted to flood the whole world, but that'll have to wait.

During the construction of the pump stack, reservoirs and transport tubes, only 6 dwarves and a cat died - one dwarf and his female cat had to test the execution chamber, the rest were honest accidents. It's basically the safest construction that ever existed in DF. The death rate is usually much higher whenever I try my luck with bigger projects.

A pile of xClothingx left in my entryway right underneath a weapon trap has just proved very effective at luring a whole flock of keas to their doom.

"It is important to note that a titan can step down across Z-Levels. If you have an outdoor area of your fort that has level ground above it, the titan will simply step down into your fortress."

This is news to me. Something new I gather?

Cave ogres! I know these guys don't screw around, so the fortress is on high alert. I've been mining everything containing metal in and around the caverns, so there's plenty of access points for them, and I'm trying to reduce them with cage traps.

As of yet, they haven't made their move.

They moved. Right back off the map edge they came from. Odd.

Also of note: Native gold mechanisms are worth a helluva lot!

I put together my first military and SEND EM OUT

The crossbowdwarves get EITHER ammo OR crossbows. I don't think one has both yet. I have enough of both.

The squad leader lost an arm and a leg, but the beast fell!

Uton and Rotun were teaching the new migrant Sorek on the ways of mining.

"It says here," said Rotun, unrolling a large piece of blue parchment, "that we need to dig a tunnel two urists wide and twenty deep, straight through there." He gestured at the south wall.

"I think this is a prime opportunity," said Uton as he produced a shiny new pick. "It's a simple enough task, and we'll be just over in the next room carving out some new farms."

Sorek took the pick from Uton carefully, as if it were made of glass. "Straight south, twenty urists," he intoned.

"And two wide, don't forget," reminded Rotun.

Sorek nodded, turned, and tapped the south wall with the pick so lightly that there was only the barest sound. It was so quiet, in fact, that it was overwhelmed by the sound of the legendary miners' laughter.

"Strike the earth!" called Uton. "Hit it like you mean it!"

Sorek wound up for the next hit, slamming the copper point into the solid rock so hard that he almost lifted himself off the ground.

"That's the spirit!" applauded Rotun. "Keep an eye out for damp or warm rock, and we'll be just 'round the bend." With that, the pair left Sorek to his task.

As Sorek approached the twentieth urist, he felt he was getting a hang of mining. It was calm, peaceful, diligent work, shaping the rock into homes for your fellows. It was almost relaxing, really.

Less relaxing when magma poured out of the hole you just made, though.

It's all very well and good to think "Don't panic," but the truth of the matter is that eminent disaster tends to contract the mind something fierce. That, perhaps, might explain why Sorek did not turn to run. Instead, all he could remember was Rotun's reminder that the passageway be two urists wide. As the magma approached, threatening to set his beard afire, he set his pick to widening the path.

And then he burned.

"You see?" said Rotun. "I told you there wouldn't be enough time to mine out that passageway *and* run for the stairs."

"Why else do you think I gave him a copper pick?" asked Uton.

A vampire!

I found out after one of my masons was found drained of blood in the communal sleeping quarters. Luckily, there are few better places in the fortress to commit a crime if you want to get caught. There was a witness, who pointed out Morul, a recently-migrating doctor. True enough, I checked her profile out. She has a two-thirds-page-long list of past citizenships and is physically a tank, ignoring her absolutely pathetic little muscles. She was previously the Sacred Mountain of The Creed of Avalanches, and "has a husband and six children." None of which are present in the fort.

I'm going to have her quarantined until I can drop her in a well and use her blood to infect others with vampirism. Nothing can be more entertaining than creating your own little army of the undead. Well, I guess a lot of things can, but still, a vampire fortress could be pretty cool.

In other grim news, I am suffering from a food shortage and am butchering unwanted livestock as I type this. There will be bacon!



The well of unlife is now carved out. It just needs furnished, and bloodied.

Several children have died/been hospitalized after following a parent into the danger room where they go to train. I am not surprised in the least, and I can't really do much to keep the damn kids out at this point.

A Trial of Scale and Fire

A titan visited Orbtalon this winter. In fact, I had a nightmare the very night before it came. In the nightmare, I dreamt that a great green dragon with iron black eyes approached our fair fortress. The signal was given, all citizens to the safe areas. But this was a nightmare. The drawbridges that should have risen to keep out invaders had been built wrong. Instead of ratcheting up to become walls, they sank into the ground instead. There was no way to keep out the fearsome creature. The military was mustered, but they were too late. The dragon was on our doorstep, and the guard dogs chained up outside were the first to be engulfed in great plumes of fire. Descending the ramp into our home, the great beast belched flame on the poor dwarven merchants of Rimtar Roldeth, boiling their blood and destroying all that remained in our depot. Eager for retribution, the marksdwarf squad arrived and began to hail bolts upon the scaled tyrant, only for it to turn on them and boil them in their very armor.

It is at this point that my nightmare ended, and I awoke screaming in my sweat-soaked sheets. Still trapped in the throes of fear, I immediately called forth our highest trained combat squad and sounded the Citizen's Alarm. I suspected that my dream was not a dream, but a prophecy. And as prophecies do, it came true.

Indeed, the drawbridges had been incorrectly constructed. A titan was coming. The combat squad I deployed encountered the giant fire-lizard less than a league from our gates, and they skillfully dispatched it. Imush Tulondist Tetothsamam Asol was the brave dwarf to kill the mighty one; he pierced the dragon's skull with his steel spear and so struck it dead. When he and the others I had sent out returned with news of the narrowly averted disaster on their lips and draconic blood on their weapons, all the grumblings of my fellow citizens ceased. I'm certain to win the next popular election, and without resorting to trickery this time.

The masons responsible for the nearly disastrous hole in our defenses can't be reprimanded just yet, not when we need them to right what they have wronged, but they're nearly done and they will find themselves confined to quarters any day now.

Imush did well today, I will see to it that he gets a suitable reward. I think better rooms and a personal tomb are in order. Maybe a statue. I'll speak with the craftsdwarves and the head of living arrangements tonight.

Finally got visited by a titan, and this fortress is nearly ten years old (founded in 126), counting the years before the reclaim. An easy one, just a big green dragon that blew fire. I had changed out my original gates and the new ones had been accidentally constructed to retract instead of raise. When the titan appeared on my map, I saved, then I sounded general quarters and sent out the marksdorfs to kill it. The dorfs were late, the dragon got into my base, killed my guard dogs and torched my trade depot (all the while the marksdorfs were ineffectually pelting it with masterwork bone bolts), and then suddenly Dwarf Fortress.exe stopped responding. I had fully intended to make a go of the huge disaster the first attack was when the game crashed. Second try, my melee squad went out first. Spearlords are pretty awesome for killing giant creatures made of regular old flesh and bone. The dragon appeared on the 17th, and was dead on the 19th.

...and have a fortress protected by weaponized killer trousers. No need for an army. When goblins arrive, just deploy the pants.

Did you only activate carpentry or woodcutter too?

i finally found the time to put my new railways to the test....... Total.... Utter... Failure.

Oh sure, the minecart moved down. My dorfs pushed it the rest of the way into the trackstop.

But it generated WAY more hauling jobs than it saved.................. I need a new way to deliver goods to my Trade Depot......


With this failure, I hesitate to generate my new plant/cloth railway, as well as build my metalgoods to magma furnace raildrop...
