I just (finally) figured out that the reason all my cats were running around with rotting, swollen feet and clouds of miasma wasn't because they were somehow sneaking past my four layers of pet-impassable doors into the danger room and getting hit with training spears, it was because there was a syndrome-inducing contaminant on the floor somewhere.  I covered up a couple squares of Forgotten Beast Extract, all of it I could find, and I haven't seen the problem again...yet.  I hope I got it all, though, because I've only got 3 cats left, down from full-on catsplosion numbers.

.....you are... complaining[/]...about the destruction of the feline menace? Catsplosions can render a fun and profitable fortress into an unplayable monster from FPS hell!

Top secret aerial footage from The Merged Fountains' new fortress, Lancevines:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's... beautiful

What does it do?
Look pretty. Also, it's the ground floor of a 100-z tower. And its center will be a 2x2 tube to drop kittens and goblins down. And when I get to making it, the top will be a shrine to Armok. I'd go into glorious detail, but I'm on my phone and thus can't pull out all the pretty pictures I have. (Also I haven't made any yet.)

When possible, she prefers to consume pear cider and nectarines. She absolutely detests kobolds.

4-5 years into my fortress so far. Somehow, the only civilization that exists is me and some other dwarfs.

Dwarves are carving endless engravings of pointless things.
Military dwarves are unhappy because I made them patrol outside in the sun.
Farmers are sticking corpses in cages for some reason.
My population is still hardly over 100.
Only major threat so far has been a titan made out of clear glass and a criminal who killed lots of dwarves.
I'll be opening up the caverns once I complete my upper entrance, but until then, the dwarves are safe from FB's.

I'm most concerned with why the cages are being filled with the dead...

My fortress is now entering late stage. I am working on making enough masterwork steel suits for each dwarf.

A while back, my dwarves murdered 3 forgotten beast that piled up. It wasn't so bad, although I lost 3 dwarves.

a titan made out of clear glass
That sounds ☼Awesome☼, could you tell us more?

Orbtalon grows. 132 dwarfs strong now. Another combination Goblin/Necromancer siege was put down with alacrity. Only lost one swordsdorf to it. He was more than holding his own until he lost his hold on his ☼Steel Short Sword☼, and then it was just a matter of time. Captured every one of seven troll siege units, and pitted them into my live archery range. Didn't manage to grab a necromancer this time, sadly. Next year I'll try again.

Examined a random engraving and discovered that the symbol of my particular government, the Crypt of Spirals, is a pear cut gem. I'll have to work that into something.

I decided to dig deeper and discovered a magma pipe in the first cavern layer. Only 34 levels below the surface! I've carved out most of my first pump stack ever (using the lowered latency design mentioned on the wiki page) but I have yet to begin manufacturing pump parts. I'm up to my elbows in trees, so maybe I'll just make them out of glass. Not sure if I should use a water reactor or the river I built my fortress next to.

My guess is that the dead are deciding to walk again and pathing straight across your cage traps.
Either that, or your dwarves are performing a preemptive strike against a necro siege.

"horrifying screams come from the darkness below!" as soon as I unpaused in a new fort.  Uh oh, that doesn't sound good.

Someone, get the bug zapper! What do you mean that won't work on a bug the size of a house which glows? No, I don't want to hear it. Just get the damn zapper.

I want War BUNNIES!!!!!!!!!!!

I tied up a bunny to a rope in an intent to sacrifice it to my web FB. Down goes the bridge, the huge insect rushs in, web web web, kicks(attack glance off). Bite(attack glance off). Kick(attack glance off).... Goes on for 30 pages worth of attacks, until the rabbit became aggressive enough to kick BACK..... Shattering the chittin of the FB insect head and leading ichor, then a few more attacks that cause it to bleed and bruises until the rabbit broke free of my rope and began running around. Webbed, kick and break free in literally one tick. Over and over again........ Until I opened the caverns and introduced ANOTHER FB to it......... where she promptly led them in a merry goose chase around my caves before running away into the caverns. Sadly, my dorfs couldn't imprison both FBs in time and the new petrosaur chased it into the cavern, where she eventually died a month later in the hills................

Been there, done that. 640+ of the bastards unleashed at once couldn't kill a goblin.

100 z-levels consisting of 1442 units of material for walls alone? That would take 144200 units of materials only to build the walls for those 100 levels. Oh man, even with 4 blocks per stone it'd take 36050 units of raw stone, with each stone processed into blocks first.

Good luck with that. keep us updated, man. bonus points if it's all the same color of stone!

In the middle of a siege, one troll has become a stonecrafter and another is now a clerk. What.

ETA: And a weaponsmith! How nice. They're also standing in line.
