A number of years into my fort. Goblin sieges turned back, or slaughtered, FB's slain Etten utterly destroyed, so much ass whooping on my part... But now something new for me. Im not in an evil biome, it's actually a mix between calm and wilderness, but I now have undead showing up. My champions are tough but few. My archers just got put together the past month and are nowhere near ready. I cant take on the 30+ undead at my doors. Sooooooo.... hehehehehe. Time to test the Humans caravan guards! I opened my gates up to the depot, and my pressure plated drop bridges, weapon traps, and those guards are making short work of em! Unfortunately I have no idea where they all came from, I see no Necro or anything, and I dont want more to appear while my guys are cleaning this mess up (it's very very messy!).

Finally I'm back to my !!engineering!! fort. Water-based test infrastructure, including drainage, is in place, and door test article #1 is ready.

While I was placing minecarts in the control logic, the fortress's first goblin siege arrived: a single squad of speargobbos led by a lasher on a cave crocodile. I forgot to stop the (experimental) knife squad from patrolling, so some of them wandered into the entrance area and three died before goblins were cut to pieces by the crossfire from my marksdwarf emplacements. The entrance area worked as designed, funneling invaders across an elevated, exposed area where defending markdwarves can cut them to pieces.

The knife squad's been cut nearly in half, but the majority of the survivors have acquitted themselves well. One even gained a title (edit: Minkot Rockswound the Everlasting Shames!), but another did nothing but get her thumb bitten off by a fleeing goblin.

Before the siege, I'd decided to continue digging deeper. I breached the third cavern near the top of a very deep section, so I'm starting to floor it off. It'll either make a grand hall to build a deep fort around or a grand cistern to fill with water or magma.

-First Siege
-30 goblin crossbowmen turn up
-They crowd into the area under my raised 5x10 drawbridge
-BOOM. Siege broken. 4 or so remaining goblins run for the hills.

I have ordered my military dorf to mine some tunnels because miners were busy smelting ore (I know, totally unprofessional, but I have only 9... wait, 8, one was killed by ballista fired at wrong time... dwarves. For some reason I'm getting only 2-3 imigrants in a wave...). Two seasons later, he has become a legendary miner. And is now starving somewhere because I have forgot to put a ramp/stairs here.

Goblin siege accompanied the elven caravan onto the map. Only a handful of speargoblins thankfully, but they did manage to kill a farmer and a marksdwarf who decided to run back to his previous station by the map edge (we are sealing the map edges with bridges to further protect ourselves) and was speared in the face.

The melee squads were scrambled and met the enemy at the front gate while the remaining 10 marksdwarves fired from the fortifications on the wall above. Swords and spears made quick work of the goblins, and a chase ensued when the remaining 2 (the slowest goblins to arrive, and had a great view of their comrades being dissected on the field of battle) decided to run for it. Sadly they got away, but I like to think that they will spread word of the terror that awaits them when they siege again.

Quite satisfied that 6 meleedwarves killed 20+goblins with no injuries. Kind of makes me wonder how the kobold ambushes managed to break a sworddwarfs' leg, and break a markswarfs' arm...

They went Assasins Creed on your guys?  Just got an ambush of Goblins too, first one for this fortress.  Stupid Elven caravan, all they do is bring trouble.

Not really, they walked over a lowered bridge that was in the process of being linked... Sadly the elves only brought a giant lion, and a giant cheetah.

Well the ambush had 5 macemen led by a lasher.  Sent civilians to burrows, and sent my army out to fight (Yes, I know glorious battles are not reccomended unless you have skilled guys but I have 20 axemen and 20 marksdwarves, what could I lose?).  Before my army got there, Ambush tag went away.  Apparently my Legendary hunters/rangers stood their ground and saw this as new hunting marks  :D.  Shot and killed 2, the Lasher and his guys ran like no tomorrow (or should I say limped  :P) but got away.  Though, my hunters couldn't help out my 2 poor fishermen who got beaten down while bolts were flying about them.  Hunting trains marksdwarves faster than actual training...

Oh crude, cross that, 6 civilian casualities.  Some of the jerks managed to go through my HUNDRED TRAP HALLWAY, unscathed and got some of the civilians fleeing while the rest of my guys were handling the main guys.  Great, my legendary bone doctor and gem setter dead...No idea how my traps did nothing while they were fully loaded.  I decided to use my sorrow on the worthless hippies who brought the darn gobbos...

PS:  A side question, but can you get dwarves to eat the gobbos or hippies like the cannabalistic jerks do?

Amusement of the day so far: I get the notification of a goblin snatcher; when I zoom to the location, I see not only the snatcher... but the bolt that is frozen mid-air in the next block. I unpause, and that's it for the snatcher.

Better luck next time, greenskin.

EDIT:

Just had a lurching freeze, and the FPS dropped. And the radio starts playing a song which starts with "No there won't be an ambush anytime soon".  Preparing for ambush now.

Every time a dwarf tantrums, they pull the drowning chamber lever.  It gets annoying.

Also, my broker killed a beekeeper and made his leg into a war hammer.  So I've got that going for me.
