My new fortress (not succession game, but that is somewhat similar to what happened), I used the JustEmbark.exe to embark upon a human fortress.  I sent four 'soldiers' to attack and capture the fort, two assigned with picks, one with a shield, and two assigned with axes.  The only thing picked up was the shield and they were mercilessly slaughtered.  I began a small fort in the corner of the map with my three remaining, but one died creating a plug for the aquifer, and the other died due to trying to get things off of the bodies of the deceased dwarves inside the human fort.  I had given the only other pick to that dwarf, but I managed to salvage it, and am now running a hermit fort.  Something I had not intended to do.  And that was only spring...

A kid got whacked bya thief, though the killer didn't get far. A sugar beetle of all things managed to hold the little bastard in place while the hammerers came and beat his brains in. They have shields now, some home made other purchased from the normal elf, and the sword squad is now pending activation, with the sergeant gears with a bladestone and steel short sword and a recently purchased suit of lamellar armor from the high elves. He shall serve as champion. One of the hammer recruits and his wife were less than thrilled when  the Colonel found thier son with a hole in his head.

Oh, and hunters evidently don't think very far ahead. one brought down a giant owl. Left it rotting in his bedroom. A butcher's shop has been set up and a gianb louse purchased to make up for the lost food.

EDIT: There's at least one necromancer nearby, as a kea tried to attack the worker who was bringing it to the rot-closet. The war beetles dealt with it, and evidently have a VERY large field of view that they can detect things, since many thives and snatchers were spotted by them and the crabs. If They want more fun though, they'll have to fight thier way past the crabs and beetles.

First Previous Next

Time flies when you're working overtime. We've cleared a forge in the 2nd cavern, and we carved out a shared dormitory in a large limestone pillar. The traders arrived, and then fled once the horde attacked them. Somehow, one zombie managed to get inside while our militia was butchering a yak. But still, us 40+ dwarves are keeping busy with walling, digging, hauling, butchering, brewing and stuff.

Embarked on second test fort of my mod after I went crazy with some interactions - all for other races, though, I really have to look into making the main civ stand out a bit more.  Plus side, I solved how to represent summoning!  Interactions do great things.

Anyways, Terrifying Glacier with a volcano this time.  Apparently all of my genomes are functionally retarded when it comes to driving wagons.  Last time they parked it on a stream that soon thawed.  This time, they parked on top of the volcano.  All the people and animals are shoved into a tiny space of three tiles, bordering a sheer 10+ zlevel drop into open lava.  The wagon is across a crevasse.

Apparently parking their vital supplies somewhere where they won't fall unrecoverably into water or be set on fire is beyond them.  At least this fort is off to a better start than Deephail - recovery of all supplies and all living things made it safely inside.  Kind of boring, but testing must continue.  For !!science!!

I gotta remember to grab more than a single mace for my military, or stop embarking near giant grey langurs, grey langur men, and anything else grey langur related. They just don't gtfo, and no one can get a drink.

So the entire military died, there was no food because monkeys stole it all, and tantrum spirals ended my fort.

Oh, and the clothier who wanted metal bars. Fuck that, you were my second mood.

My first will eventually be claimed in an adventure mode hopefully, that kaolinite mug with tetrahedrite and kaolinite spikes and giant parakeet bone images must be worth something.

Fired glacialhell back up, found something that I forgot what I was doing. looks like it was going to be a guard tower. Also, this is the first time a long while that a siege didn't head off or attack while the wagons were still out from a caravan. Is it strange I want a pair of dragons, cave or normal, to attack the settlement and stumble into the traps for a breeding program?

And should I start using my hordes of naked moledogs and dralthas as trade goods?

Sidenote - Dralthas will breed very quickly. I hadn't expected this and now have a fairly sizeable herd. Likewise, naked mole dogs may or may not have short life spans, and animals that are wild will breed if on map long enough.

So I found two soldiers in the hospital, the result of some bad dogeds while thining out the crundle hordes. One is currently in traction and has a skull cast (Evidently those metal hats were a good.... "Aquisition" from the goblins and can go a long ways making falling on your head from four z-levels survivable.)  Wrestler got into a fight with a kobold as he finished a weapon trap, using the weapons too large for dwarves to wield to thin out trolls and such, and.... Lost. Got his hand messed up, but our medical staff is suprisingly prompt and since the sensory nrves at the point of impact were severed, He doesn't feela thing, though he does seema touch concerned about the bloodloss.

Werebison shows up, kills two dwarves, strolls back the way it came from.  I check DT to see how it affected happiness in my fort.  Everyone's ecstatic.

And I thought Ramkal Jokemaster had ended the werebison curse over 20 years ago.

Weapon trap is already paying for itself. A stray kitten that seems to be trying to kill itself with cold found agoblin who was minus a leg. Found her leg up by the recently built traps. Also: SO. MUCH. HAULING. We actually have enough food now that we won't need to killa damned thing, rendering the dralthas a kind of moot point.... Guess the elves will be getting a nice treat next year.

Due to the sheer magnitude of hailing needing to be done, the secondary food store that had been dug out ina hurry, is rapidly filling due toa lack of barrels, so more have been commisioned. We've got enough wood to furnish our spare rooms and thensome. Another kid grew to adulthood, so when the time comes I may just end up using the next group of three to grow up as conscripts with swords, since we don't have a sword squad. On that note, this is the most kids I've had grow up before. Usually they get killed or snatched.

High summer of a new year in Waterspear.

Good construction progress in the past few seasons.  The Keep has been topped off (two floors roofed in) and a small observation tower completed as well.  The ditches have been paved as well to control the undergrowth.  Bricks are now being stockpiled for a road leading south to the river.  Might be used for the bridge as well, or perhaps something more esoteric like metal blocks will be used for that.  Kilns are also starting pot production since some fire clay was traded for and there is demand for booze storage containers.

Two migrant waves came in, and with only minimal interference from the goblins.  Added forty more population to the fortress to take the total over 120.  Not many useful craft dwarves due to the good array of specialists already on hand, but the militia is getting good personal.  Two more legendary fighters (hammer and mace) as well as ten or so skilled enough to be put directly into militia units rather than reserve units.  The guard unit of marksdwarves (Level 8-10) is full at this point.   Armor and weapon production is up to speed at this point and extra equipment is now being stockpiled or cycled to get better quality gear.

A few goblin snatchers and ambush teams entered the Outer Bailey and were chased out (the lucky ones) or trapped and killed.  Two ambush teams tried to attack migrants coming from the west - and found out that the postern gate the migrants were using is located quite close to the barracks used by the full-time combat squads.  Instead of picking off unarmored farmers the goblins were taken under crossbow fire from the battlements and then assaulted by a half dozen fast-moving melee dwarves.  A few got away, but ten or so goblins did not and their armor has been melted down to make more crossbow bolts.

An overlooked 'error' in a mining gallery led to an unnoticed hole into one of the caverns.  First indication of this was a "dwarf interrupted by Forgotten Beast" message as a giant winged slug flew in and started chasing haulers fetching stone.  A few recruits fired crossbow bolts at it while it dismembered a dwarf and the militia squads were sent for.  Only the one hauler killed before it was swarmed under and killed by a mix of hammer and axe dwarves.  The hole was walled up and FB killing will hopefully go back to trapping and spiking them.  (This one was the third FB killed so far in this fortress, and luckily not the deadly dust one.)

The last few pages of a diary are recovered from the charnel house.

-----
The dead walk among us. We have been forced to abandon the surface as they outnumber our meager military.

----
All of our livestock have been slaughered. We barely got the last door up for our defenses in time.

----
Kol Cattenalis... the poor bastard is outside unconscious and surrounded by zombies. Our military isn't strong enough to retrieve him. Gods forgive me

----
Several of our miltia as well as babies are missing, I fear they were lost to the surface in the confusion. My carpenters report that we are out of wood, I pray that we find sufficient logs in the deep caverns below us

----
It seems the foul necromancers grow bored with attempting to penetrate our defenses. A great tide of their mindless servants are passing by our front gates.

----
Our forces are mustering, we plan to make a quick sally out of the front gates to strike at the heart of the undead. Much of our weaponry was lost in the original battles and must be reclaimed

----
Oh Folly! The undead have surrounded our forces and pushed us back! They've breached the outer wall and our men are slaughtered. We must retreat to the depths of our mines if we have any chance of survival

----
Our Overseer has come up with a cunning plan to funnel the undead into a trap-lined wall, construction progresses slowly, but the hope of reclaiming the surface brings us joy. Several of our dwarves have been greivously wounded and require water. We are beginning to tunnel into a lake to provide a stream.

----
NO! We breached a lake in order to allow wate to flow into the cavern, to treat our wounded. When the water broke through, so did the undead. We were not fast enough to put up our defenses! FOOLS!

They have reached the dining quarters! There is nowhere to run! We have made a last stand in the hospital but we cannot hold out for long...

The rest of the journal is stained with blood.

----------------------------

If only I had not opened up the front gates that first time to fight the army a bit. Dear God, that army just got bigger and BIGGER. 260 at the end :/

Romancecloistered has had a fun year after I turned it into a community fort. Have three Hammer Lords (in theory, due to Elite bug, they're showing as Hammerdwarfs), with a fourth one almost here. Year two as a fort.

After some stupidity, managed to breach the aquifer, and dig a shaft. First cavern layer is stupid deep; its on z-48. Two and three are virtually right ontop of each other, and my attempt to find the magma sea hit SMR, and left a gap into the third cavern layer. Had two successful moods (one was a near miss, got very lucky with a well timed migrant wave with something I could butcher), and then a vampire nuked my legendary woodcarver which was the major source of trade fodder. *FRAK*. Going to need to find something now I can generate quickly and trade to the caverns (my only source of iron). Probably gold now that I breached the aquifer. Still, this next year is likely to be hell.

Found the vampire, and stuffed him in a wall. Annoying, she killed her only friend. At least the vamp didn't drain one of my hammerdwarfs. Three months, still alive. Ironically enough, he's my chief medical dwarf since he was the only one I have with any medical skills.

Two goblin thiefs made it in, one tried to run out onto the map, and got annilated by a hammer before reaching the edge. THe other flew down the exploration shaft spooking two miners. My military chases it into the third cavern layer, took out a blind cave orge that was in the way, then splatted the goblin into little bits.

Got the caverns properly sealed off until I'm ready to explore then properly. Need to find magma as a first priority though ...

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

Got back in after a few months' hiatus...have an nice site with a volcano and extreme cliffs, various metals and flux.  The cool thing is there's a pretty huge detached pillar near the cliff that's stone after the first couple of z-levels; eventually I'll have to carve it out and make a tower with a skybridge (maybe fill the fortified area with magma and bridges spanning it, not sure).

The mayor murdered a couple people in a tantrum. I noticed that there was a wiggler sleeping in his bed; when I went to check, I found that this wiggler was the daughter of the sheriff and one of the murdered trolls.

Gog damn. Are you meaning to tell me that the mayor killed this kid's mother, then adopted her, despite the fact that her rightful father is still alive and sheriff?!

That's messed up.

(either that or she's just taken residence in her mother's murderer's abode and nobody gives a fuck, which is just as sad)

EDIT: hahaha damn that place is CRAWLING with murdered sheriff-wife children now
