My first fort for six months was just broken by the second goblin seige: I had only just finished burying all the corpses from the first siege and accompanying tantrum spiral when the second turned up.  And the drawbridge had been destroyed, so it was goblin party time in the main courtyard.

But the goblin sieges included War Cave Dragons!  Which was a nice surprise.

Notes for the next fortress:
Get migrants jobs ASAP, otherwise they spend too long socialising, and get upset when someone dies.
Large families migrate in now.  Which is nice, but everyone gets upset when someone dies.
Get individual bedrooms dug out, 100 dwarves dont like sleeping in an earth barracks with 10 beds.  Otherwise they get grumpy.
Get security organised BEFORE starting the megaproject.

I did get a Macbre mood though.  Ive still not had a successful fell mood, the only one I ever got resulted in the moody dwarf going insane after murdering his friend!

Sorry for the next to obvious line in the middle.. The fort is to big to screen all at once.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But this is pretty much whats going on.. Though I am missing out the other dozen levels of the fortress... But this is the main floor.
I think there is around.. 65 wardogs in that top Right area..

Here is whats going on in another fortress of mine.. Everyone is running over to clean up the siege right now.
And once again, This is just the main floor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Are those engravings of zombies I see?

Before I did this fortress, I had a Dwarf/Necromancer adventurer.

"Engraved on the floor is a Superiorly designed  image of Gujeg the Oblivion of Shade the Emaciated freak by "x" Megidurvad. Gujeg the Oblivion of Shade is traveling. The artwork relates to the wandering of the emaciated freak Gujeg the Oblivion of Shade in the Poetic Forest in the late Autumn of 2.

My fort, Riddlekeeper, is currently being overrun by zombies coming from the catacombs and refuse pile, reanimated by some necromancer hidden in the map. My soldiers have been overwhelmed and assimilated already, so I think that is the end of the fort.

Spoiler: FUN (click to show/hide)

EDIT: The offending necromancer was just mobbed to death by cornered dwarfs. Fort is still doomed, however.

EDIT2: And a child just got a fell mood. This is the best fort I've had in some time.

I just lost my fort. It was on flux stone and lots of metals, and other generally good terrain. I mined down to lava. First death was a miner who moved to the place he had just channaled, which was over lava. I later found adamantine and started mining it. A minute later, I get a notice about finding HFS. 60-70 demons spawned and came into my mines. I had 11 people, 10 were immediately put in the military. The demons came up and murdered all my dwarfs anyway (no surprise there).

For my next fort: WAIT to mine admantine until I have a big army with good weapons.

Village Shemonul "Plankwayward", Moonstone 265

A slight moment of respite comes with the season. No ambushes from goblins have arrived with the dwarven caravan as they have so often in the past. Snatchers and thieves still blight the area, but they haven't found a way around the trap system yet. Those who did do not survive the war grizzly bear horde behind it for long.

I'm still trying to clean the corpses and miscellaneous items from the approaches to the fort, but it's slow going. There's no free hands available but at least the fort is self-sufficient for the time being. I've limited import to fancy steel war gear (there's only one skilled metalworker). Export consist mostly of worn and non-fitting clothing. The mountainhome seems desperate for the stuff as it still sells well into the tens of thousands of urists total.

A short reorganization of the militia has resulted in rather unorthodox insubordination. Several of the legendary soldiers flat out refuse to wear *any* clothing, weapon or armor even when directly ordered to pick up specific pieces. The champion and militia commander tells me that any dwarf only needs his beard to beat a gob. While true, I have gone to great lengths to secure an edge for our soldiers and it disheartens me to see them walk into battle with such callous disregard for personal safety. I fear they have become emotionless automatons only out for slaughter. I've ordered the memorial hall extended and put in a request for more statues, slabs and coffins. I fear this will take a while as the masons are busy trying to expand the fort.

The refuse situation improved slightly when the new pile was designated. Larger and more open to the sun it should have proven sufficient. It has not. I must use the expansion again for refuse stockpiling.

I swear, we seem to output more corpses and refuse than anything. Why don't these corpses rot away already? Such a waste of space and dwarfpower.

Wild flailing about to get my kitchens dug out and meeting hall built, contending with a booze shortage for the last season.... the dwarves are gettign wrestless , a few snatchers were chased off by caravan guards and i've had some interrupts due to asps, quarters for the dwarves are coming slowly as my last migrant wave swamped me before i could get my starting 7's rooms finished.

Edit: Just found out that 4 dwarven children have been snatched in the last 2 months..... all of them are in the center of my fortress guarded by dogs.... freaking ninja gobbos.

The local Echidna man tribe didn't fare too well against HugoLuman and his new Adamantine longsword. I guess it really is absurdly sharp because a few chest cuts and the dropped dead.

EDIT:

Just as trade season with home begins, a vile force of darkness has arrived! Pikegoblins led by an Olm mounted swordgoblin. Elloz the centenial veteran met first, followed by HugoLuman the titled wielding that feared Bluemetal sword, and his replacement swordgirl Beskar. This should be good.

Beskar suffered a broken shoulder and fled into the trees away from the figh while it continued. Hugo ran his base quality spoilerite longsword throihg a goblin skull, a goblin was liberated of its teeth and limbs before it bled out, and Sgt. Nashra Scaledassaults is already hailed as the hero of the battle, managing to bisect the goblin captain  leading the attack from her still living and unharmed mount. Now it'll be down to wether or not the enmy survives, as most have lost thier legs to the Thiefcrushers military. And an arm. Honestly if any goblins make it out it'll be a miracle.

EDIT II:

I would love it if they'd stop damaging my soldiers'  motor nerves. I don't even know how they can damage just that one nerve either. That's an illogical possibility even for DF. Sensory nerve in the hand, fine. Motor nerve in arm. Not fine. Three fucking soldiers now only have one hand, and it'd take too long to retrain replacments, plus I have too many untrained older citizens to make it practical. Ollioli isn't skilled enough to fight without a shield but I don't want to use metal on shields, so now he needs a new sword to make up for it.

At least Hugo is skilled enough to fight without one.

My fort of Roastedroughness is actually going quite well for once. However, due to my noobyness and complete ignorance of the catsplosion phenomenon, I had a lot of kittens. I murdered all the cats, but couldn't bring myself to butcher the kittens. So I pastured them just outside my fortress walls.

Minutes later, a vile force of darkness arrived. I was able to kill off all the gobbos, but not before they reached the pasture containing 50 or so kittens. It was horrible, kitten parts and mutilated corpses everywhere, but I must admit it was amusing to see kitten paws and rear left legs splattering against my fortress walls. Let the Great Kitten Massacre of 127 be a reminder to any migrants NOT TO BRING ANY DAMN CATS!

The seige's back was broken utterly with thier captain chopped in half. While Ollioli and Beskur were injured, with Ollioli losing the use of his shield arm and Beskur recieving a busted shoulder, there were no deaths of human origin. Five goblins out of 22 managed to escape, and that was only because my men were busy chasing goblin survivors in the other direction or finishing off wounded ones. The battle yeiled the following heroes:

Veteran Elloz Packburned, The Divine Staff of Negating, age 105. And it's funny, she doesn't use a polearm. 8 kills, all goblin grunts.
Sergeant  Nashra Scaled Assaults The Absolute Lock of Letters, age 20.
3 goblins grunts, the captian, and his mounts.
Cripple Segeant HugoLuman Relievebolt The Whirled Tenacity of Subtlety, age  22. three snatchers (spotted mid battle, thus counted among the attackers) and three grunts.

It appears my poor head craftsman, Scrappy, will never have his rest...

He's been dead for well over a year now, rotted to a skeleton. He's even been assigned a tomb. However, the dwarves won't stuff him in the damn coffin. They take the corpse over to the coffin, put it in, then pick it back up and haul it all the way up to our corpse stockpile, drop it, pick it up, and take it all the way back down to the coffin, repeat infinitely until I forbid the thing. Now he's sitting in the center of the hall. Won't be surprised if he comes back as a ghost...

My community fort Portalstockades just hit the embark site. Looking around, I notice a place where storage rooms can be dug into the dirt, and quite a few scrap piles to scavenge from. This might be interesting.
