[upate] Ok, so there is a Goblin ambish squad in the fortress, but they're friendly? Just some tomb-robbers chilling out ?

Prepare for some fun when the first goblin siege turns up :P

In other news, Gearedsoldier's lava dispenser (aka Operation Boatmurdered) could not be tested on the goblin siege which turned up, thanks to the dwarf caravan which decided to show up around the same time.

update2 : The final doom of the fortress, a Voracious Cave Crawler, was still lurking in the abandonded keep. The expedition leader had his head bitten off in one bite, the reclaim-party's 2-man adequate millita were slaughtered. The 'friendly' globins fared little better against the slithery legendary foe of "Skinnysword" the would-be Mountainhome.

With much regret the call to flee was called, the four remaining Frontierdwarves abandoned the fallen.

Afendastot, "Skinnysword" shall now be stricken from the maps and records, only talked of in hushed tones of lament. A home now only for ghosts, monsters and Goblin scavengers.

Quite possibly a werebeast which arrived during the day, hence you get an announcement about a human, rather than a werebeast.

A home now only for ghosts, monsters and Goblin scavengers.

Checking out Legends: Yep, both of the last two survivors were vampires, but that didnt stop them getting killed by:

"Olngö Balancedwork the Distracting Rooter of Fortifying" the voarcious cave crawler.

... bastard worm, apt name though , ill read it as "Terrifying Router of Forts" :)

New fort, new luck and hopefully a lot of dead dwarfes enemies.

New Trade Depot layout:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I know, it's another nasty exploit, but I don't care.

New entrance design:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All traps loaded with 5 green glass serrated discs or 5 green glass menacing spikes, all exceptional or masterwork. The 2nd wave had a high master glass maker, so this was the most obvious decision, together with quite a lot of coal in the first 3 layers. Right after the bridge in front of the first door is a platinum floor. Everyone is welcome!

Downpoint:

Now I'm in the third year and still no ambushers or sieges in sight. Generated wealth so far: 1,400,000 DB.

Making a lot of glass furniture. It's pretty fun, really. Next up are traps.

The Nolavuzian Chronicler
Limestone 5, 118

The fortress of Nolavuz has grown in leaps and bounds, despite the attacks of several forgotten beasts and goblin siege forces. the latest wave of migrants was 32 strong, 20 of which were farmers. due to the lack of farmland sufficient to occupy such a large amount of farmers, all new farmers will be drafted into the army to take up crossbow and sword. a huge leap in the mood of the settling colonists has caused a baby boom. It seems that every week we hear tell of another baby being born. There are nearly 40 babies and 30 children between the ages of 2 and 12. with now 40 men and women enlisting in the army, and all necessary tasks taken by dwarves, the military force is growing by leaps and bounds. Metalsmiths are pumping out more weaponry than previously seen, while the craftsdwarves have provided enough crafts that we are able to purchase every item the annual caravan from the Mountainhomes bring us. Unfortunately, due to the remoteness of the location, elves and humans have yet to make contact with us.

While it is only the third year of this small settlement, the wealth of the settlement is reported to be over 175000 and is estimated to be well into the 300 thousands before the next caravan come, not counting the additions of artifacts and unmined wealth in the two caverns we have uncovered.

Village Shemonul "Plankwaywards", Malachite 264

Ambushes keep harassing the fort as traders venture into the area. The goblins upset surviving merchants greatly, and I have not been able to trade for a great while. The last two human diplomats from Dur Mundung "The empires of Portent" have fallen prey to the invaders after visiting the duke and the civilization declared war on us for being unable to protect it's dignitaries. I have a hard time baby-sitting my own nobles and children (many were snatched) as it is, I simply cannot spare any dwarves to look after foreigners outside of the fort. What I can spare however, are -iron bolts- to shoot at human invaders. The small incursion of human pikemen lead by a swordsman on a camel (of all things) was quickly repelled with few survivors on the enemy side. The next visiting dignitary sued for peace. I accepted as it was nonsense to continue fighting with a common enemy already trying to slaughter both of us.

The goblins remain a a constant nuisance. They're no match for our militia in warfare and our traps capture many of them trying to sneak inside the fort. Their true target is not treasure, but rather our young ones. While I strictly forbid them to go outside, they refuse to obey and galavant off to the pools for a sip or battlefields to retrieve spoils (why one would want to wear a loincloth off a dead goblin is beyond me). Just last Slate little Dastoth Lisatoslan (Notchwound) thought it would be fun to wander off outside, was stabbed by a goblin and stuffed into a sack. Luckily the attack was witnessed by a marksdwarf on the rampart who managed to injure the gob before it ran out of range. The dogs and a nearby member of the militia managed to catch up to him and save the child. The kid had a broken leg and had to walk with a crutch for a while after the hospital took care of him. I have to find a better way to secure the offspring. A concerted effort from the gobs to siege our settlement seems likely, but has not occurred thus far.

Also a problem (again) is the refuse. We're a good bunch at recycling, very little gets thrown on the pile. The corpses of dead goblins do not have any other use than just decay. Though I do find the militia practice with bolts made out of strange bone once in a while. They snicker about about it when they find me wondering about it. "Only good use for a dead gob". I do not understand, but the Duke is raving enthusiastic about any kind of bolts so I won't inquire too much. The piles are filled with various parts of slain enemies. Perhaps I should issue my melee militia with not such sharp weapons? In the mean time I'll issue more blocks to wall off even more property for stockpiling corpses. If only I could trade them.

Praise to the miners! The prospecting mines have found a great sea of magma, with several spires of raw adamantine! An interim forge area has been erected, fueled by the intense heat from the depths and my craftsdwarfs have started on extracting the strands from the ore. It takes an awful long time, but the results will be the grandest set of armor to commemorate the selection of the champion! I have several soldiers who have distinguished themselves eligible for the position.

Not long after the discovery of the adamantine one of the farmers got a bout of inspiration and threw one of the craftdwarfs out of his workshop. He created an artifact goblin bone cabinet.

Which explains a lot.

Finally, a goblin siege which doesn't coincide with a caravan. Operation Boatmurdered is a go:

Trying to make a Sparta fort, with Helots living on the surface and Citizens/Warriors living underground.  I want the Helots to do surface farming, so how do I have them place stuff like wood and food down a z-level without them actually going down?  I'm experimenting with burrows, it seems cool.  I've read a bit about dumping and hatches, but won't that require a lot of micromanagement?  Is there a more efficient method?

A clear monster diplomat from Ulogil has arrived. Ethgath,  Deity. An enormous wolf twisted into humanoid form with external ribs. It has a gaunt appearance. Its clear hair is long and straight. Beware its poisonous sting! She is average in size.

Legends say: Ethgath, human goddess. A deity that occurs in the myths of the Entrancing Unions. Ethgath was most often depicted as a female human and was associated with misery.

She is clad in masterful large sheep wool dress by an unknown artisan. It is made from sheep wool cloth. The thread is red with redroot dye. The object is adorned with hanging rings of wax opal and green glass and menaces with spikes of finely crafted morion. On the item is a[n] image of a whip vine in dacite.

She gets bonuspoints from me for wearing an elf nail earring, +elf hair amulet+, -elf bone bracelet-, and an -elf bone crown-

It happened at 1h09m50s of this DF stream.
After I am through looking at the Deity diplomat, right after her marches a respectable goblin army and tries to besiege my fortress [1h35m10s]. So it begins...

Massive amounts of engraving throughout the fort have attracted new migrants, 90% of which were either Children or Threshers.

Question, with pressure pads, is it possible to have a minimum weight requirement? That is, if I burrow children into a room, then make a floodgate that only opens via an adult dwarf exiting, I can have a safe zone for children?
