Things could be going marginally better at my latest fort, Luregalleys.
The trader, also the bookkeeper/etc. decided that doing the books and sleeping was more important than meeting the first trade caravan.
This is awkward as there aren't a hell of a lot of trees around and I have yet to find sand or ore of any sort.

This came marginally after suddenly realizing that the booze was gone and the outside water was all frozen, whoops.
A crash program to melt a frozen pond netted some murky water, which promptly got cleaned by a dwarven turbopump, solving that issue.
At about the same time the harvest ripened and the brewer got his act together.
Disaster averted.

Once the disaster was averted I decided that the best way to deal with the future goblin ambush was to dump a ton of lava over the front door. I worked things out and carefully selected bridge materials, no problem.

When the merchants packed up to leave I was pissed and ordered the lava dumped.
The setup worked perfectly, other than the merchants having time to flee (clearly some work needs to be done).
The bridge melted.
Now there is a permanent lavafall down the front of the mountain, over my door.
I can't think of any way to block the flow due to how I cut the opening (channeled on the top Z of the volcano rim), so I guess we'll just use the back door.
This is somewhat tragic, as the only level ground to speak of is out front there.

I may attempt to dump some water onto the channeled area, it'll be a risky business, but what the hell.

a human "Titan" ?

A human has sprung from ambush!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He also appears to be totally naked ( no inventory ).

[EDIT] He ran away ?! Of course if i woke up hungover, naked, in the front yard of a Dwarf Fortress, i think id run too.

He's a werebeast. Of course, because it wasn't his time for the were-transformation, he just fled.

A siege, just as i was trying to build a wall which always seems to get cancelled :(. Giant Olms and Cave Corc riding goblins. Lost half of my melle squad but otherwise casualties are low. Riderless Giant olms andCave Crocs now idling in river outside fort - going to have to build terranium cage-traps :(.

So...my king vampire...who just killed one of my axedwarves and received a 200 day imprisonment, is just sitting in his cage.  I looked at his information and checked (k)ills and noticed the following:

One Notable Kill:

Zas Lashhope the Competitive Lover the dwarf, d. 134

I didn't know that the dwarf he killed had such an interesting name.  His murder is listed under "Murder of Zas Mengzanos agothevon"

I'll always remember him as Zas Lovedwarf, the mighty axe handle.

Village Shemonul "Plankwayward" Slate 261

The fort is thriving. Plump helmets are the main available stock and I've ceased cultivation of them to lower their amounts (currently around 1500). Booze production has overflowed the stockpiles and dwarves started leaving pots and barrels of it all over the place. I still trade for it to create a variety which means that excess booze is left unguarded outside. It must be somesort of child attraction as at least two have been kidnapped from the depot area. It's time to change up the entrance again as I've yet have had a child reach maturity and those masterful pigtail socks are a pain to make. I will also change the plant stockpiles and stills to create more different booze natively. This will also help with milling and processing the different plant types.

The military now has a full rotation of three markdwarf squads manning the wall. They're either training, patrolling or off-duty. The melee-squad is only required to train every other month. Thus far another ambush was defeated. The gobs only managed to kill some merchants which I've decided to bury in the crypt. Also of note were a rampaging Giant and a Minotaur. They were captured live and used for training. I did engrave a memorial for them and put it in a new addition to the dining hall to commemorate the notable exploits of the military.

The long overdue creation of the fortress guard has been completed. An office connected to the cells has been put to good use immediately to exact punishment. A craftsdwarf and a suturer were imprisoned for exporting amulets. A dozen others were severely beaten, a tanner and a farmer not surviving the dwarfhandling. Irony has it that the second officer assigned to the guard imprisoned the captain for the same offense. He was stripped of his armor and had to endure his incarceration naked. Stricken with shame he became depressed and died of dehydration.

The caverns have been breached and I've started steel production. The only artifacts of note are a leather skirt and a leather mask. I'm not sure who to give these to yet. I'm thinking either the champion or the hammerer. Or perhaps the captain of the guard.

A leather MASK!? That was obviously made for the hammerer/dungeon master, in fact that should be a class specific item "+5 Mask of Sado-Masochism".

This is the 3 food shortage this year so obviously I'm doing something wrong or there are too many useless ass kids in this damn fort. 25 dwarves and 12 of them are kids, the atom smasher looks better every time one of those snot nosed little shits eats one of the plump helmets that could be sustaining my miners or ANYONE else for that matter. Although I could take matters into my own hands and edit the raws for a little bit of revenge. "Well no Mr. Urist we haven't seen your children but would you like to try this new roast? It's from a rather succulent animal that spent it's entire life being fat and useless to this fortress and is basted in a fine Timmy-glace err I mean demi-glace sauce."

Nothing in particular, getting immigrants which almost without fail get drafted into my fledgeling military, but as for interesting things, I've currently got modded cave crocodiles breeding like rabbits and occassionally maiming/murdering eachother. I could expand their living area to give them room so they don't infight as much but hey, this way only the strongest survive. Every military dwarf is going ti have a war croc assignec to him, maybe more if they're important to me.

Code: [Select]
Azmolngotun Nadak Tesum, "Obscurecults the Defender of Controllers", a giant cockatiel leather mask.

This is a giant cockatiel leather mask. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with trillion cut white chalcedonies and encircled with bands of larch and alpaca wool. This object menaces with spikes of billon.
On the item is an image of Chainedtempests the claystone ring in giant cockatiel leather.
On the item is an image of a tapered baguette cut gem in pig tail fiber.
On the item is an image of Dodok Coppersoothe the dwarf and Broiledlashed the giant hare leather skirt in pig tail fiber. Dodok Coppersoothe is raising Broiledlashed. The artwork relates to the creation of Broildedlashed in Plankwayward by the dwarf Dodok Coppersoothe in the late authumn of 258.

Reading that back it does make sense for the hammerer. Guess I'll have to find someone useless to fill that role.

The 1st time i see that.

I had a fort in which i made it as a personal challenge to not build any traps, only walls and doors and military to resist goblin sieges.

Managed surprisingly to defeat 3 of them and with some casualties in the dwarf side each time, but not enough to decimate my troops, as i was lucky enough that the game actually provided competent warriors and marksdwarves for once.

Then the 4th siege arrived, near to 100 enemies, a big one, and this time a lot of Trolls, a very lot more than in the previous siege.

After the Troll legion destroyed my gates, and invaded the halls, the whole goblin army and their pets followed, and then it was a bloodbath, despite the brave resistance, the whole military was annihilated, mostly destroyed by the very numerous powerfull Trolls despite some of the dwarven soldiers had some very high skills in their weaponry they were simply no match even with the support of the marksdwarves.

As it was going to end with a massive carnage, i decided to just browse the internet while letting the game gets to its end.

Then after a while, i checked to see if it was ended and was surprised to see the game paused due to "a migrant arrived"
I thought, poor guy, probably going to die in seconds, then i noticed the "SIEGE" warning on top of the screen wasn't there anymore, and checking in the fortress, that was full of dwarven corpses all around, there was no more invaders anywhere.

I wondered how the game didn't ended as the fortress was gone, and noticed in my dwarf list that there was in fact a survivor from the siege, a fisherdwarf that at some point of the log was interrupted by a troll (all the dwarves were inside the fortress when the Goblin invasion crushed the defensive perimeter).
Then he got a lot of tantrum and calmed down several time, became Mayor (as he was the only dwarf) too.

Looking at his status he has the left hand broken and has a teeth gone.
He is a competent hammerdwarf and has a kill (a dwarf that went berserk at some point of the fortress life) and i highly doubt he was able to resist the army of Trolls coming there or the goblins and various monster pets following.

But he's always alive and he is in the fortress alternating between tantrum and calming down, while all around him every dwarf is dead.
I really can't understand how it can be possible for a dwarf to have survived the massive onslaught.

Now that he has been joined by a single migrant, i wonder if i should prepare for the next and probably last goblin siege :D

Managed to seal off the magma leak by building a reservoir above it and dumping water on it. Somehow managed to cause a cavein that exposed the lava see down at the bottom end of the lava tube. It also woke a lavacrab up.

Dug a new improved edition of the same Flood the Front Door operation, this time I used floodgates made out of obsidian with obsidian mechanisms at both ends attached to obsidian levers. @*&% things better not melt again. Doing this cost me a miner's larva, she dropped it when the lava came through the newly torn open gap in the wall of the volcano. It is worth noting that this dorf was not a miner five minutes prior to being told to mine out that section of wall, nor was she a miner five minutes afterwards. Pre and post lava breaching she was a fisherdwarf on a map where all the water freezes in the winter. Not surprisingly, there isn't anything to catch.
I need to build another one for the back door now.

Bonus points for finding some clean water underground, seems like a patchy aquifer or something, weird. But what the hell, I'll take a safe water supply that doesn't take careful manual pumping. It also means I have infinite water for a bonus doomsday device addon I want to build. It's probably been done before, but I intend to have a lava lake a Z level below numerous narrow bridges, so that to enter the fort you have to cross the lava pit no small number of times. The doomish part is the large water tank poised above, ready to drop plenty of protosteam into the lava for a nice scalding cloud.
Alternatively, it occurres to me that I could just dump a bunch of stone on the area instead, flattening those lucky enough to be hit and creating a significant amount of magma mist for the less fortunate.  I'm going to have to try that.

There was a brief issue when the fortress had zero food. Slaughtering some baby animals fixed that briefly, then the caravan showed up and I bought most of their plump helmets. Next up is setting plump helmets to not be used in cooking, so that I always get the seeds back. Built a larger farm, too.
90 dwarves live in this place now and babies are being born constantly, I am seriously considering a Males Only policy for the next fortress. Or make use of the first tantrum spiral as an excuse for some berserkitus preventative medicine.

Still haven't found anything but clay, rock, and a few mid range or low end gems. No ore of any kind. What the hell kind of map has no ore?
Perhaps I need to dig deeper.

At least you have clay, and you can use that to make clay crafts and trade for ore. I have an embark which has no ore whatsoever, only a ton of chalk and rocks and a couple of gems here and there - and this is after prospect all in DFHack.

Speaking of which, it seems that you only need to mine out a given number of adamantine tiles to actually unleash hell, and it seems that the demons are caged in adamantine. After smoothing and carving plenty of fortifications in the adamantine spire, I somehow managed to unleash hell in Gearedsoldier. All is over now, and we've managed to get to slade! :D

I just traded ~4000☼ of goods to the dwarven caravan... with a 3☼ profit for them! :P

My broker is amazing, and my trade strategy an obvious success.
