I had a vision of creating a "Barbarian" settlement, focused on huntings, simple metal works and... berserks (not in the Dwarfy sense). Then I decided to just have a bit of fun, try to survive for as long as I can with a Race which is not as sturdy or strong. I am also trying to make this settlement based on the surface as much as possible. It's working, so far, with each section of the "village" devided by a seperate wall. Perhaps much later on I will make it a full sized city, with "Taverns", statues, cobbled streets, "shops" and all that.

Actually if they become heroes (weaponlords) Humans are not to be fucked with under any circumstance.

Unless an arrow or bolt puts them on the ground on the first hit, THEY. WILL. KILL. YOU. a number of rangergoblins learned this terrible fact first hand at Shockedtowns. They knocked a non-hero hammerman on her head with a bolt to the hip (Still lodged in there too) And the axelords tore them to shreds cause they missed or had thier bolts batted out of the air.

I'm serious. Dwarves are little engins of destruction, but they seemt o treat battle like some kind of demented hobby much of the time. Humans in the DF world? They take this shit very seriously.

I also had a soldier die when they got a bronze dagger inserted into their brain through their steel helmet.  I'm calling BS.  >:(  3 of the 4 deaths I've suffered in this fort are to bronze daggers in the brain or bronze daggers taking someone's head off.  Daggers are almost as bad as whips.

Yeah, daggers start to frighten me more than whips. There's a big difference in seeing your soldiers being struck down by a lasher lord and in having a thief go "ONE HIT KO!" in year 2. Must be the weapon, I read sometime ago about a dwarf rampaging everything with a steel dagger.

I made it! I am starting to confuse myself. A good sign you're doing things too complicated.
After finishing the basic layout of my fortress, I started to connect the dots. Designing something to look good is easy, making it also actually work well is not. At the very least I'll need 4 water reactors to - and here's the catch - get the water into the 4 reactors. :D
I totally oversaw the problem of not having water on the surface (freezing biome), so the water has to come from one of the caverns. Earliest water ressource from where I put my layout is 43 z-levels deep on z-level 3 (surface is at 100). Now, the reservoir of my magma piston is on -6... which of kind of makes the piston pretty much useless as I could just as well install 9 more pumps. Stupid thing is: I've already dug out the entire piston!
For the water system I have in mind to work, I'll need a fckton of floodgates, etc. The way it is looking, I can practically floor an area with levers.
I wonder if I'll ever finish this - and more importantly if it works! I've spent the last ~12 in game hours just designating stuff, I haven't even unpaused once. If I messed up a tiny thing that causes the whole project to collapse, I'll have so much Fun.

Everything's on fire again. Don't know why.

Burned down my goddamn workshops. Had to bring everyone and the horses inside before they burned to death, but so far so good.

Thank Armok it didn't ignite the coke!

Basementdwellings got off to a poor start. The 4x4 embark, combined with the waterfall, didn't make my FPS too happy. Take two!

Basementdwellings - Site survey

Lots of trees, lots of soil, and overall pretty flat and easy to defend once a wall's up. Let's do this!

The Rustic RabbitHut

29) Endless Autumn
30) Endless Eight The Traders have Arrived !!

Everyone is busy ... but there seems to be energy in the air.
The Pond Grabbers have multiplied. Like a zillion of them, but they're not worrying me yet.
The Kea corpses that appear on the surface make me more worried.
They interrupt stuff but they don't attack.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

OMG The Traders do exist !!!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've been so busy that we've forgotten to haul all our toys to the trade depot.
The dwarves are offering ~200% for toys, and Sayaka has been pumping out masterworks for a while.
Get moving !

The caravan has no trouble with the Kea Corpses. Most fall in a non-evil biome, but a few will rise.
Regardless, I have my airlock already prepared so they won't be interrupting stuff much longer.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even the Yaks are happy to arrive, they Kick Kea Corpse Ass.

It's about now that Hikari announces that she made a Llama Leather Helm.
Good for you, but I'm not sure that this is something to be proud of.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My dwarves have been extremely busy, and the garbage chute is almost done,
save one kid that's lucky for me unfortunately stuck in the pipe and may end up in the hospital.
But that's for next time, in the meantime here is the christmas tree of dwarves doing all the hauling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

P.S. Here's the list of what I traded for all my toys.

(bored with previous fort, it got too safe and easy to defend, don't feel like breaching the volcano my base is around and flooding my whole fort with magma, because I'm just that nice. This will be my 3rd attempt at an evil biome, the last 2 ended horribly after zombie grasshopper people attacked)

The dwarven Mountainhome of The Cavernous Axe has deemed a piece of previously uninhabitable land ready to be explored. It lies split between a very nice, peaceful Joyous Wild, and a terrifying land of undead. Glumprong and feather trees in abundance, deep soil layers, and masses of zombie sparrows.

1st Granite

We parked on the side of a hill, right in between the two areas. Spotted a group of undead sparrows to our west, and dug into the hill immediately. Zuglar and I are the only of the group to have any experience with weapons, and brought along a basic set of armor, as well as an axe and sword. So far we have been able to evade detection by the residents of this strange land...

Initial storage is set up, and farm plots have been designated. Our masons, Ral and Ingiz, were put to work making a small drawbridge to seal our entrance from the outside, and now spend their time making stone blocks from the initial stone we brought with us. That should be enough to encase our entrance in stone rather than this filthy dirt... we only wait to be sure the undead have moved past before opening our gate. Hopefully migrants and traders have few issues reaching us.

Area was dug out to place excess food. Not much else has been done in Sabreheals, besides the Great Tunnel completed and now open to all. Mechanics have begun the airlocks.

Shortly after this, we aim to use our huge amounts of gold to make us a golden road, which should instantly make us a barony at the very least.

Nothing else has been going on, really.

The tunnel is now completely safe from attack.

Found a pool of magma. Been trying to pipe it up to the surface, but so far haven't had any luck with setting up the power system. For some reason I can't figure out how to send power down a z-level.

Channel out the tile you want the power to go downwards and build vertical axles/ gear assemblies in the channeld out tile. Check the wiki on machinery and screw pumps (pump stack) for more help. It is dead easy to set up once you understand the few basic key principles.

Engraving of New Sabreheals has begun.

A forgotten beast called Bax found himself unable to attack the fort through walls and left again.

We're almost finished the Golden Road.

A pikedwarf captured in an ambush a while back is unable to be executed, or anything.

I can't assign this dwarven bandit to a pit, but he activates traps as normal. He tries to flee when freed.

I have 156 giant mosquitoes on my map. With the Kobold's Camp mod, I have 18 little kobolds under my regime. I have 10 giant cabybaras, 7 trogs in my basement, and the last resident, a giant coatl that is poisonous. Those aren't the problem. (Suprisingly enough) I have a mild mosquito issue. Ie: I have 156 of the blighters. 156. I am DOOOOOOOOMED! Ah, well.

But death by a plague of giant mosquitoes? That's a first for me.

Edit: Read the wiki, apparently this has happened before. Is this normal?

Remove [FLIER] from their tags, save, reload, place [FLIER] back.

Watch all 156 of them plummet and splatter, and feast on *prepared giant mosquito brain*.

Bah! True kobolds... lock the doors, hide inside, and wait for the fps to return.
