^^you playing goblins ?

Anyways, I have had the bad idea of building a 1-tile wide wall right on cavern exits. Now a manera decided to appear ON the wall (rather than in the convenient space, outfitted with a cage trap, that I left in the middle)  and annoy the hell out of me and my fortress by scaring dwarves and being totally unreachable by my speardwarf. I can't build anything because my buiders are scared and I can't dig anything to reach it either.

I make a marksdwarf, equip it, and send him against it. He kills the manera quite easily, via tearing the heart. Now that the manera is dead, I can deconstruct the wall. I give orders to do so.

Too bad now that the manera is dead, the next batch of creatures entered the caverns. Plump helmet men. And guess where ? Exactly on top of the same Armok-damn wall, just like the manera.

Sighing deeply and cursing my bad luck, I send my marksdwarf to kill them... and one empty -iron bolt- quiver after, I realize the tissue of plump helmet men is such that they cannot be killed by archery.

No brain ? Check. No blood ? Check. Tissue severs on break, but crossbow won't break any tissue ? Check.

Arguably plump helmet men make frequent, useful crossbow training dummies... but I CAN'T KILL THEM. And while not as bad as the manera, they still scare my dwarves away when they try to deconstruct the wall.

I consider what options I have to kill them...

Speardwarf and militia commander -not the reach, strangely enough
Marksdwarf -can't kill them
Reaching via digging and building floors - most likely can't
Magma - far more trouble than it's worth, plus PHM are resistant to magma according to wiki
Flying war birds - i don't have any
Cave-in - can't, they're on a border tile
Tame dragon - don't have one yet, i also risk setting fire to the caverns and it looks overkill
Waiting till they leave the map - probably the easiest method, but I like killing PHM. They're so... tasty.

ARMOK DAMN IT.

A child just randomly walked into the obsidian generator room just after the floodgate opened, there was nothing in there at all.
Perhaps it was checking out the curiously warm walls...

Someone is going to be pissed when some tiny obsidian-encrusted shoes find their way back to the parents.

The Great Rabbit-Hut

Old Chapters
07) Summer's end barbeque
08) Autumn - Watch for Falling Undead
09) Curse of the GFGHOC
10) Taming the Wild

Okay. I'm not grumpy about this fort anymore.
With proper tactics, I can snipe-away the undead from the surface, and provide an opening for the caravan that will eventually come.
I'm much work grumpy at my job...

I watch the underground railroad, now full of undead, and notice them chilling there.
I decide to try to slaughter the ones that entered my tunnel.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Start removing the wall, but then the horned owl corpse started circling overhead.
IIRC, the targetting is done along the XY axis only, meaning if your dwarves are in the cavern and you tell them to guard a point in the caverns,
they'll go right up to the surface and suicide on the hordes up top.
So I order the wall decon to stop for now.

When Misao halts orders to remove the wall, she runs off to bed. Scared i guess.
Need another person to start removing again once the GFGHOC goes away.

...

While the militia braces for the hallway area, my workshop area is chugging along.
They're making a slab for the migrant ghost.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...

The tunnel is openned, and the fight of 3 wrestlers vs one dwarf corpse begins.
The fight goes very well, only one dwarf gets a bruised hand.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now I get some fitting "migrant has been missing" messages...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While my dwarves are stationed over the "dead" corpse of Rin AsaRyoko, another undead corpse in the railroad moves in for some action.
This fight isn't as easy. The corpse managed to punch one guy in the leg fracturing the bone. Time for my doctor to go to work !

Ah, here's a good sight.
There are two things right in this picture.
Corpse disposal and slab placement are awesome.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The slab reads this. Note the GFGHOC is named.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But no time for that. Every's busy either:
: building walls for the hospital
: building doors for the hospital
: building beds for the hospital (did I mention I brought a ton of wood on embark)
: building slabs for the ghosts
: hauling undeath to the garbage compactor
: recovering wounded
: sleeping

That one corpse got back up again. Broke a militia's spine. This will be good...
C'mon Yume, don't die on me. I have a 1-to-1 ratio of functioning militia to corpses in that underground hallway.
Don't die on me yet.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...

Yume AsaLuka has suffocated...

And that's all folks.
I don't have the mandwarf-power to escort the caravan if it comes, and undead migrants haunt the surface.

Still, I learned some more things.
My best guidelines for undead biomes are:
: Bring stone
: Bring wood
: Butcher the pack animals, never let them rise as full corpses
: Garbage management
: Mulitple entrances in undeath are good. It allows easier access to safety.
Yes, you will have to worry about seiges, but your population won't ever get large enough in the first place
: If you go the military route, bring an anvil
: Cross your fingers

I apperantly have kobolds wandering the lesser used halls of my fortress.  No idea how they got past the guard dogs AND merchants guarding the entrance.

It seems making leather armor isn't completely useless as I thought though.  a kobold apperantly decided to ambush my archer captain and it's dagger was deflected by a llama leather armor.  On the flip side, it seems kobold skin, muscle fat and bone provides little protection from llama bone bolts.  Interesting.

Just started a new fort in 0.34.07 to break in the new computer. Despite this computer being a netbook and having a 3x3 embark instead of the 2x2 I was restricted to on my old computer, the embark runs at a respectable ~130-140 fps with seven dwarves and 19 animals. (You know your old computer sucks when a netbook can run DF better.)

Belrisen (caret over the i but I haven't figured if there's a numpad on this keyboard yet so I can't add it), or Graycoal (but that's way too boring, dammit RNG), has a 13 z-level waterfall made from a brook. I know where I'm putting my entraaaaance~!

Oh! The first layer rock is marble, and I see silver as one of the metals. :3

just hit the caverns in my quest for year 1 magma(VERY shallow embark fuck yeah). A little excitement as my mason enxtend the staircase from the top of the chasm down to the bottom as I seem to have put it next to a troll...who promptly paths to my fort killing my militia commander (who only had an axe). Luckily, dogpiling him managed to kill him without any further deaths and/or serious injury(A good thing thanx to only having starting 7 still). Now just got to retrieve the corpse of my militia commander from the caverns and wall off

This fort really does sit on the event horizon of madness and catastrophe
No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Killing all cats and dogs in my fort. They have been replaced by peregrin falcons and cougars respectively. Also killing all tame warthogs. We have a new batch of wild ones and you guys are not helping me gain training knowledge, off to the block. Warthog, cat and dog roasts will be served at every meal for a long, long time.

Been a while since I posted in this thread.

My new 0.34.07 fort in a Terrifying Glacier is going relatively well. We used the wood from the wagon to make three beds... Until the first caravan arrives, it's sleeping on the floor for everyone. Infernal ash has been sighted five times, each time drifting over the area nowhere near us before leaving again. We are going to have to slaughter our yak before long, as there is no grass...

[EDIT]

We struck Hematite, Rose Quartz and some opal. The meeting room is slowly but surely comin' on up. Also, infernal ash drifted over our remaining wagon stocks, so the 'Flee the Ash' siren was sounded.
