While constructing the first roman-style family house, I chanced upon bauxite in the quarry. Red roofs? YES.

Playing with Kobald Kamp mod and Fortress Defense II: Found a nice site with magma at the surface and a brook that is fairly flat with trees and all that.  Not sure how I'll use the magma (if at all) since its in stone but its nice to have, looks pretty.

Forgot to bring any dogs (damn..) and didn't even spend all of my points.. Oh well.. We'll have to make the best of it.

Inspired by this, I've modded in 'arboreal octopuses'. They're cephalopods, roughly 3/4 the size of a grizzly bear, that have lungs and live in tropical rainforests (I figure that's how they keep themselves moist), capable of grabbing weapons and items with their tentacles similarly to giant desert scorpions. In addition, they're brightly colored and thus valuable as pets, and can serve as bodyguards because not only can they hold weapons, they're intelligent enough to gain skills through CAN_LEARN (which is somewhat realistic, since octopuses are capable of manipulating tools occasionally). Maybe I should give them CANOPENDOORS... can octopuses open doors? I'll have to figure that out.

I embarked and had everyone try to wrestle one as a test. The octopus grabbed a pig tail fiber toga off one of the dwarves and began thrashing the others with it, caving in several skulls before getting punched in the brain. They're interesting in that respect, actually, because blunt weapons can hurt them even though they don't have bones; their brains can be bruised with a sharp blow to the body.

At one point, arena tests showed an arboreal octopus wrestling a sword and shield out of a knight's hands and dismembering him before biting through his skull. I'll have to see how they perform in combat when wielding weapons they've grabbed from enemies (outside the arena). Perhaps they belong in savage biomes :-\

There are lots of anecdotes of octopi opening their aquaria and getting out, even moving to other aquaria to hunt at night, then going back to their home base. So definitely give them CANOPENDOOR. These things sound awesome, actually.

Despite the ridiculous defeat of my military at the hands of the goblin siege; Castleperfect lives on, safely behind a magma moat. Despite the ridiculous defeat of the goblin siege by a crystal mountain titan; Castleperfect grumbles on, safely behind a magma moat. Despite the ridiculous defeat of the merchant (free stuff!), migrants, and a handful of additional troops at the hands of the same titan; Castleperfect trundles on, safely behind a magma moat. Despite the ridiculous mistake of lowering the bridge when I couldn't find the Titan on the unit list anymore; Castleperfect bumbles on, with the titan safely locked away in somebody's bedroom.

A hunter, wood burner, and farmer were lost the the three ambushes we've had so far in our second year, as well as two goblins and two lizardmen caught in our under-construction outer wall and cage traps. Our militia of 2 dwarves assisted by caravan guards have so far dealt with the ambushes without incident, although we now have two hunters unable to walk still bringing in kills... Id had his spine fractured in three places and several other severe injuries, but was somehow saved my dwarven medicine, although he continues to hunt with three infections, 2 bandages, 4 sutures, and a cast on his leg... The other tried to get a giant olm that broke his leg, and then ran away. This is the best experience with dwarven medicine that I've had so far. Severe coal shortages have led to the burning of over 300 logs in the furnace eventually, and the first of the tungsten warhammers and mauls came out of the smithy a few days ago. Silvermasters shall not fall! Unless we get a siege this winter... The added traders from LFR really seem to increase attacks/thieves if you export much. I've had 9 thieves and six snatchers, and its still summer of the second year.

My Axedorf Militia Commander just earned himself a title, Asmel PurpleArches, the Fair Harvester of Eyes. I feel like putting on some Blue Oyster Cult now and seeing if I can get some statues made of suitably fitting creatures for his room. He's earned his name on goblin ambushes, where between him and two others, they've made short work of goblins.

You mean the ability to have endless training dummies, a carpet of eyestalks and tendrills, and a plant that both makes for some good grizzled sea man hard liquor AND the ability to turn your dwarves into the Night´s Watch...not reward enough?

Two points of interest in Trammeledclasped:

1. In autumn of 310, a metalsmith was possessed by forces unknown and commanded to produce a weapon of unsurpassable quality. Shasartost, "Frightenedvised", an adamantine spear worth 1048800 Urist, making up nearly a fifth of the fortress's wealth on its own.
It is encircled with bands of polished corundum, granite and water buffalo leather. This object menaces with spikes of diorite, llama wool and polished corundum.
On the item is an image of Dakost Pulleywashed the dwarf and dwarves in adamantine. Dakost Pulleywashed is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the appointment of the dwarf Dakost Pulleywashed to the position of general of The Dented Boot in 164.
On the item is an image of Alino Washedwinds the elf and Amayi Wealthglow the Parched Fire the dragon in polished corundum. Amayi Wealthglow the Parched Fire is striking down Alino Washedwinds. The artwork relates to the killing of the elf Alino Washedwinds by the dragon Amayi Wealthglow the Parched Fire in The Hill of Defenses in 66 during The Duel of the elf Alino Washedwinds and the dragon Amayi Wealthglow the Parched Fire.

2. We have 6880 litres of booze and 783 units of edible food. 270 units of meat, 15 of fish (the river having been long since fished clean) and 498 units of plants, some of which are inedible. What would be the best way to get tons of meat relatively quickly? (Invasions are off for now, but my dwarves have no qualms about eating anything that used to be able to talk.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I rather like this idea.
One could also mod in some of the creatures referenced here; http://www.fearsomecreaturesofthelumberwoods.com which is linked to on the very bottom of the tree octopus page. Good entertainment, really. :P
I find it funny how a few people actually get confused by that site and think tree octopi are real :P

The 49-width stone dome dining hall is under construction. Debating whether or not I'll complete the dome or leave the top incomplete so I'm not doing outside constructions while doing fortress defense mod, without using danger rooms or traps..

In other news, I recently killed some elves who were talking about 'trade' or some such. So I put them down. Also, the puppy defense force is swelling in numbers. Already it's up to 40 members! Just waiting for the FPS hit..

Thief! Protect the horde from the skulking vermin!
The dwarven caravan from bla bla bla has arrived!
The orcish caravan from bla bla bla has arrived!
A vile force of darkness has arrived!
Only in 8 steps.

"Hey Urist, why is there a Postit-Slate saying "Don't Open" on the door ?".
*Thunderous Crashing noises*
A sprinkle of dust and gravel falls from the rough granite ceiling, the noise of a pot falling off a shelf somewhere echoes through the cooridoor.
"Er, yeah about that; Don't open that door".
A deafening screech like a thousand splitting shards of glass comes from behind the door.
A passing cat stares horridly at the door for a second and then bolts away.
"Oh ok, just tell everyone alright, not all of us can read".
*Sounds of scratching like crushing glass and breaking rock on the back of the door*.
"Meh, i'm sure word will get around"

They probably aren't helped by the "Other Animals of Interest" links. Christmas Crabs, Coconut Crabs, and Flying Squid are all real, among other things.
