ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Congratz.

Now reserve some proud for 'dwarf lady X gave birth to twins' message :P
I remember my first triplets. New messages are special.

Goblin siege!  They showed up just as the felisian caravan finished unloading, so I sealed the gates and settled down to wait them out.  Then, I got the message "Urist McCowardly cancels Attend Party: Interrupted by Goblin Pikeman."  Alarmed, I zoomed to the scene, to discover that a goblin strike team was standing on the level just above my outdoor meeting area, terrorizing the dwarves within.  At the peak of this debacle, I had over a hundred terrified dwarves running around in circles because of these ten goblins.  I dispatched my elite crossbow squad, who made short work of the goblins, even managing to set one on fire (still trying to work out how that happened, I think it's a slight miscalculation with one of my modded metals).

Same siege, other side of the map:  I get a message that a troll has destroyed an orthoclase floodgate.  Knowing immediately what has just happened before even seeing it, I burst out laughing.  The troll destroyed one of the floodgates holding back one of my three magma reservoirs, flooding the entire area before my gate in red, liquid death.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Knowing that this is a flaw, I now know how I can prevent this sort of !!FUN!! in the future (not that I'd really want to, but still).  I just have to channel out the are immediately in front of the floodgates, so that building destroyers cannot reach them.  I just have to block off the reservoir so that my dwarves can safely get to it.

Due to a plague of children I'm getting bored with my current fort. I've already smelted a lot of silver for my UFO, so I'm not ready to abandon it just yet. So, I'm taking a break and doing something a bit more fun instead.

In the year 6 The Balls of Freezing of The Unswerving Irons founded Akatheb ("Wintersucks") on a terrifying glacier. Here's the cast of characters and our equipment:

Spoiler: Dwarves (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Stuff (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Notes (click to show/hide)

Edit: Hahaha, that didn't last long.

A blizzard man wandered over almost immediately and was set upon by the 8 war dogs. I realised Clark had brought a crossbow, quiver, and bolts, so he was made military commander and set to attack. He ignored the equipment and ran over to start punching it instead.

MacReady was then enlisted into another squad and sent into battle. Even with his pick he couldn't do anything. The blizzard man had 13 pages of scars to the head.

The others wouldn't go anywhere near the wagon and couldn't get any food or water. We were a week into Felsite when MacReady and Clark died and made everyone else miserable. They all keeled over and died shortly afterwards.

The blizzard man lost a hand, a tooth, and lost the sight in one eye, but other than that was covered in bruises. Mental note: In future, send someone to fight them before they get near the wagon.

On the plus side, while I thought I had no shallow metals, our ramp down uncovered some native platinum on two levels. I'm thinking of sending a second team to find out what happened to the others.

Edit4:  And my mayor mandated Circus Tent fabric.  Apparently, he really likes it, and demands we make items of it.  Also, the fell guy finished, and made a Dwarf Bone Spear.  I find that appropriate.
That actually sounds like a badass weapon. What sort of message does it send to the goblins when your dwarves don't hesitate to kill their own to make weapons?

That they are weak and getting desperate. Now is the perfect time to attack!

Goblins always pick the most humorous opportunities to attack.

The second team arrived at Wintersucks to find a hideous scene of carnage. I was roleplaying it, so I only gave them a handful of supplies (they expected the first team to have set up a base). We had ice wolf issues and some restless ghosts to take care of.

I managed to dig out a small space to store our supplies and then set the dwarves digging down to find cave water. And down. And down. I was beginning to panic. They were dehydrated and still digging (unskilled), but hadn't breached a cavern yet.

A few migrants arrived minutes before team 2 started keeling over and dying. The sad part is, if they had managed to mine another half-dozen squares they would have hit the edge of a cave with a lovely lake nearby.

I've never seen a lake this low before (not that I go digging for them much). It's almost on the level where my previous forts have had a magma sea.

Started a new fortress, of cobalds. I got both the miners killed by collapsing trees as they were digging downward ramps. 3 of the others are very unhappy to miserable while the farmer and smith are ecstatic because they're too busy making out with each other to care. The expedition leader and craftsman are both assigned to continue mining now that the woodsman has cleared the trees. Those other two? Hiding very far from the rest of the group in the hopes of surviving the imminent mini-tantrum spiral.

Oh, and one of my pet gremlins jumped in the river and got eaten by a lamprey. My only hope is that one of the females is pregnant and will produce a son. Well, maybe I can get the caravan to import them...

I had an underground sea that I wanted to drain out in order to get at the minerals in it's walls. So I set up cave-in's to block off the exits to keep water from flowing in from off the edges of the map and refilling it.

Unfortunately, the floor of this sea was paper thin and when I dropped the ceiling on it, it punched right through....into a caldera on the next underground down!

Water gushed through into the middle, making tons of obsidian, which itself promptly caved in. Fortunately, I had been building an iron bridge out of flooring across this same caldera (yes, this whole thing was due to my negligence) and the obsidian glommed on and started spreading out. Eventually, it would plug the Caldera and start flooding the underground layer.

In order to fix this wave of cave-ins cause by careless caving-in, there was only one solution: more cave-ins! These went better, and the torrent of water dwindled to a trickle. The casting has ceased and now I have a cup of rough-cast obsidian half-full of water in the middle of an active caldera.

Too bad it isn't boiling/scalding or I could have some Goblin soup.

Well, that was anticlimactic.

I just got my first forgotten beast, at a really bad time too; I was preparing to make an actual entrance into the caverns for my weaver to start collecting silk. So, I mobilize the Halls of Soothing,  my axedorf squad to take out this large, eyeless, web-shooting tick, with the hospital on full standby...HOWEVER!

Didn't even have to use his axe!

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I've just found out that one of my miners has a thing for turkey demons. I'd better keep an eye on him.
