Now that I have the Goblin sieges and ambushes under control, with the help of an artifact mechanism weapon trap and a newly installed catapult battery, I actually have the time to ponder some of the other artifacts my wonderful Dorfs have made.

...But horror struck when I was enlightened to this bit of Lore I didn't know:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Apparently the King of our mighty Dorf civilization inst a Dorf at all.
...
And he's due to set up my outpost as his new Crown Fort next Spring!

The name Ral FurnaceSounds is definitely dorfish, so he probably started as a dwarf and was kinged as a dwarf, then got kidnapped and turned by a lonely dark monster, so he's remembered by history as the dark monster's groom.

Speaking of history, are you sure he's still the king of your civ? It looks like your fort was established in 151, and Ral FurnaceSounds was king in 68, so it's been a long time since then, and things happen...

Yeah, I did a little more browsing through the engravings. He's a Nasties, pawn, he's still King ... and he married a lovely young bride recently. And by young I mean really young. It's good to be the King.

Our damn legendary cook has gone and turned all our tallow into masterwork lavish meals before I could get any great percentage of it stored for soapmaking.

Now the damn dorfs will all become fatlusses off his meals.

In other news I captured a horde of snatchers and thieves. Orc thieves mostly, but I did use runesmith to force one of the kobolds into joining our civ. His girlfriend on the other hand started a fight and thus had to be put down; she'd just continue killing people or potentially start a loyalty cascade.
Also caught a troll from the caverns. I suspect a militia training arena is in order...

The lower half of the pump stack is complete and hooked up. Just need to set up the upper half.

I also trapped the dwarven caravan because they were making ridiculous deals. All the animals and merchants went nuts, a lot of them going berserk, and so more than half of them are now dead. The guards are still sane, and the remaining merchants are still busy being melancholy.

But I DO need to get that entryway I locked them in opened up again to trade with the paklara caravan...

Currently running fort cleanup. All hauling dwarves are throwing away unused blocks, stone, corpses, furniture, mechanisms, jugs, statues, cloth, clothing, and so forth. If it's not an artifact, food, or bolted to the floor, it goes to the trash compactor.

I'm not sure if the purpose is to abandon, to get rid of clutter, or simply because it's something to do. All I'm sure of is that it'll take a while to throw all of that away.

In case of future abandonment, I'm also going to make an extra large trash compactor/meeting room. It'll be grand.

Today will be the bloodiest day in the life of Monom Crushedtheaters the Glaze of Suitors.

His Commander and only squadmate, Dumed Orbsflare the something something, just died after being riddled with goblins' arrows.  Since Monom disgraced himself earlier in the fort's history, I was planning on giving the Militia Commander position to the only other named soldier in the fort, a 15 year old axedwarf.  However, that soldier also died, so Monom is the only real contender left.

Now, I believe in redemption, so I'm giving him a chance.  Right now, he is the only one fighting against an entire siege (If the siege breaks through the traps and doors, there will be a squad of barely armed recruits waiting for them, and not much more).  He is currently dueling with the goblin hammerlord while also fending off goblin spearmen.  Meanwhile, about 20 or 30 crossbowmen are bombarding him with arrows.  Conveniently, this battle is taking place right on top of the corpse stockpile.  I kind of want to draw it.

The Animal Dissector Rigoth Mengam from Rulunib has arrived.

Got this message with the arrival of the dwarven caravan.
Probably because the Outpost Liasion is still hanging around the fortress since sat year.

A goblin siege has recently past. It went fairly well, except for some civilian dwarves who decided to ignore the alert to head underground. Instead they went to the top of a tower I am building to act as targets for the goblin archers. I lost a dwarf but I got a large quantity of metal arrows

OH CARP!

!!dorfs!!

A honey badger somehow got into my above-ground meeting area, where a tame dragon was idling. The dragon did as dragons do, entirely unbeknownst to me until I received a message that a stray dwarven pig sow had bled to death. I see that it torched probably 2/3s of the meting hall, and about 10-13 dorfs bled to death the instant I unpaused. Including most of the married women and their children in the fortress, my captain of the guard and two other guards (leaving one fortress guard for the entire fort), and a legendary smith.

The few surviving children and fewer surviving fathers are so filled with grief from their deaths and subsequent 'decay' that I fear a 7-dorf simultaneous tantrum spiral putting an end to the fort before it's really got going.

Needless to say, the draconic creatures will be spending the rest of their lives either underground or in controlled combat.

I suppose I should add 'expedition leader' to the list of the deceased as well. Didn't even notice she died, but now the remaining 6 of the founders are all pissed. Oh, and the only doctor in the entire fort of ~99 86. At least everyone that was injured died... I guess...

Update; After the fire burned out, taking with it about half the livestock to boot, I finally let the dorfs out and unforbid everything. The next objective is to kill the humans that escaped their hut after the door, and the majority of them, burned down.
My mistakes with this fortress:
-Giraffes.
-Honey Badgers.
-Permitting my pet dragons to tour the fortress at their leisure.
-An outdoor, grassy, meeting area. Should be paved.
-Giraffes.
-Embarking on a human town that for whatever reason was immediately hostile to us (This never happened in previous versions of the game I'd tried it on...)
-Giraffes.
-Not enough cage traps to catch the honey badgers.
-Too many cage traps, keep catching more giraffes!
-Giraffes!

Aaand then a carpenter that was possessed completed an acacia crutch. Just one image, of ashes. Pretty sure it means ash trees though, but we can all just use our imagination. I was hoping for more obvious depiction of the event.

Windmirrors - Year 12 (Now in the Age of Legends)

Quiet.  A few goblin thieves discovered as bits in the access tunnels.  (One detected as she crawled out, went about three more squares and expired.)

Part of a camel herd (well, two camels) are now caught in a ditched-off area of the map.  Will see if they potentially breed, and for now they are the emergency meat supply.  (Chuckle - current meat supply is over 1000 due to butchering a few FB and a dragon.)

Another FB appeared, crashed a few doors, and was then spiked to death.  Eleventh one killed by the fortress.

Upper and lower level connections increasing as the masons, mechanics, and miners practice aquifer-penetrating technique.  One of these cut pathing distance to the Trade Depot from the core areas appreciably.

The casting form for the Central Keep has "topped out" at nine levels above surface.  We're half-way done with casting obsidian in it.  And the pump stacks are almost at the top to in order to finish the job.   Afterwards the stacks will not immediately be de-constructed but maybe re-purposed to make some lower support structures.

And the smiths have completed full steel kit and adamantine weapons for the entire set of regulars and first-line of reserves, and then some.

Chancemined apparently now has the Dragon Thabost as a permanent resident. She apparently will be chilling in the mouth of our volcano. Thankfully, though the entrance to the fortress is over the volcano, as is the trade depot, butcher shop, garbage dump/sacrificial hole, and foundations of the Obsidian Tower of Dwarven Might, everything is walled in, so no cancellation spam. But I'm wondering if this is gonna be a permanent thing. Tried luring her out with a swordsdorf, but no dice. She hasn't triggered any gobbo ambushes either (like the other dragon did... had two on the map at the same time. Both female though, so no dragon breeding program.  :( ) so... yeah.

Welcome to Chancemined, come on in, have a black bear roast, and don't mind the dragon in the volcano under the butcher's shop.

When I was reorganizing my inventory to fit all by books on life and death into various bags and things, I looked at my inventory and saw that I was multigrasping a necromancer slab.  It was pretty hilarious.
I think that would be an excellent way to impart the critical lessons of life and death to the ignorant masses.

Sieged by beastmen very, very quickly upon new fort startup. Instead of watching them taking apart my measly 22 dwarf fortress, I trapped them in an obsidian box then flash-boiled them with lava via dfhack. All that's left is beastman grease now.

I've been building a lavaduct to transport lava from our volcano to the plateau where I built my fort. A good mason just fell from a bridge while trying to place a corner piece of wall too early. He broke his right leg and his lungs and guts have stopped working. I don't have a hospital yet so I'm not sure if he'll make it.
