Due to the amazing usefulness of butchering in my previous (overrun) fort, I've elected to have my next fort rely on cattle. I'm fond of goat milk, so I made a butcher/cook and a milker/cheese maker. Yay!

Then i realized my embark didn't have a river in a hot zone. I was able to save some of the water before it all dissappeared, but I had to rely on alcohol obtained from gathered plants, by a dabbling brewer/herbalist. why not drink milk? because apparently dwarves don't drink milk - they only eat it. Buggers.

On the positive note, all my underground mud and soil now grows fungus. My goats are happily grazing on the colorful moss and making cheese. Mmmm.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

I managed to make a well at -8z!
Well, the well itself wasn't so much the problem but I had pressure issues, until I discovered the magic Checker-Board Pressure Regulator ( http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Pressure ). So simple and it works like a charm :p.

Windmirrors enters Year 5.  Year 4 ended with a goblin "siege".  One squad of goblins with crossbows who entered an access tunnel and got butchered by the first pair of weapon traps*.  Five killed, one crippled (the leader) and the rest ran before the outer drawbridge shut on them.  The Axe Squad sortied and the captain got a cheap kill finishing off the cripple crawling/fainting his way up the tunnel.

* - Serrated glass discs (2 or three sets) and a silver hammer connected to an exceptional mechanism.  Apparently they do a nice job through leather armor since at least three of the kills were goblins getting gutted.

Elsewhere in the fort the forging and smelting operations were moved back up near the surface and tapping the magma reservoir established there.  The old site will be stripped and mothballed.  And then the pump stack will be isolated from the rest of the mining galleries by walls in order to simplify the downside defenses.  The aquifer is still proving annoying and the excavation to put a more convenient shaft through it for shorter travel to the surface Depot  is getting larger.

The population is roughly at the 100 max cap.  The last three migrant 'waves' were single dwarves.

Oh, and the lignite fire in my magma reservoir is still burning...

And finally, we expect a promotion to barony shortly.  A militia captain has been recommended for being ennobled - and he will take an active part in the defense of the demense.

A slight misjudgement with shaft digging led to my expedition leader/only miner falling and breaking her arm and leg. It's a new fortress, so I don't have a doctor. I don't have a nurse. I don't have a dabbling diagnostition. I have a Fish Cleaner. This will not end well.

Fortress Def is working overtime here - frogmen on camels.  WTF???

Anyway, in the 5th year of Anguishfortress (last surviving bastion of dwarfdom in the WHOLE WORLD), two mounted frogmen squads & two goblin forces, both headed by their respective law givers, and a squad of white tigermen arrived, and the Clean Dyes and Blockaded Blocks watched the mayhem of the weapon traps and then slaughtered all.

Most funny was the feric elves (oh, forgot to mention them - somewhere between the goblins and the froggies) mounted on Giant Lions.  The beast were mauled by a weapon trap, and the elves were trying to outpace the charging dwarves on a bleeding, one legged lion with a broken spine...

And seeing the invasions hit one line of weapon traps, run in the opposite direction, hit THAT wall of traps, and flee back into the first line of traps... Priceless.

Anyway, not lawgivers for the gobbies or froggies. and WE WILL outlast all others.  Then we win, right?

Had this massive goblin siege, about 5 goblin divisions plus trolls, could trap about 10 goblins and most of the trolls in a drown-and-flush-to-FB-inhabited-cavern trap, caged another half a dozen, had to fight the others. Population dropped to 25%, but the invaders were finally repelled. The remaining 20 dwarves were busy building coffins/hauling dead ones to prevent tantrum spirals. Then 3 consecutive goblin ambushes finish everyone because the gate traps were jammed and the mechanic was too busy hauling weapons and clothes.

It was epic.

Transmuted two miners into a militia to deal with a rampaging honey badger.  No casualties, surprisingly.  The honey badgers were cute when they chased the yaks around every once in a while.  They were a pain in the ass when one chased a dwarf towing a yak into the middle of the fort.

Now I'm draining the river so I can dam it at will.  Well, /now/ I'm at work and the game is paused at home.

I just discovered that if a dwarf has had all injuries healed but refuses to leave the Hospital, you can deconstruct the Traction Bench their lying on to wake them up. It probably works with beds, too.

Dry biomes suck if you want to rely on wells and keep farming to a minimum. I am currently relying on a dry puddle of "pond" to slowly fill up my well. To prevent excess drying, I have floodgates for the first few spots, to be opened on at a time as squares fill. I have 2 cook/butchers for food, and two dwarves for brewing small farms and wild mushrooms.

On the other hand, spiked-ball traps are awesome! They kill pretty darn well, and keep cleanup to a minimum. I have an excess of meat as well due to the elephants and such walking over those same traps.

I'm keeping light on the industry, but I'm enjoying improving all of my stuff. I have an excess of bone, horn, and leather with which to decorate. I've run out of things to decorate with leather actually, so made a few leather shoes for future improving.

I'm also playing with goat genetics. It'll be several years before I find out if it really works, but almost all of my goats are now muscular and gigantic overall. One nanny goat is also fat, which I hope to bread into the population.

I've made it possible to successfully play as elves, by adding a couple of new positions that allow trading, record keeping, managing production, and making military. I had to add several reactions to the craftsman's shop to let my elves make the wooden weapons and armor that I gave them. Yes, that includes my modded hatchets and PICKS. I also had to give them the ability to perform masonry so as to build structures out of clay.

I'm trying to keep mining to a minimum, as in only digging holes for wells and rooms for a root cellar or two, and a few large rooms for storage and clay gathering.

D:

My mayor just survived for three days against a 30-goblin siege, then two more against a 40-tigerman siege which joined in partway through.

He had full danger room training, masterwork iron armour, and an artifact battleaxe, and in the end he lost when a tigerman crushed his spine with a lucky hit from a morningstar.

And to think I was about to set him alight for making unreasonable mandates!

I'm placing oxidane reactors and magma pump stacks within close proximity to eachother (don't worry, the pump stacks are protected by lots of grates, it's really my biggest project yet with so much iron usage and so many magma-safe rock grates, and magma-safe bridges all linked to one lever).
