One word: Badgerfort.

Caught a handful of the beasts early on so decided to mod the raws and make them trainable. Once I get up a nice sizeable army of them and dorfs (using defense mod, had a couple of setbacks, aka: lost about half the population twice) going to round out the badger theme proper. My elite crew of warriors are going to have badger cloaks and hoods, decorated with badger teeth and bone, and they will charge into battle with their ferocious friends by their sides, berserking together for the greater good of Erushlek.
Also I live next to a volcano.

(Yay first post)

Currently starting up a militia and training them so that I can prepare for digging down to find magma...

I have to be prepared to have lots of fun after all.

If you keep tempting fate like this, you're gonna find it.  The Random Number God of Dwarf Fortress has a sense of cruel irony
Isn't playing dwarf fortress alone enough for the RNG to maim you anyway?

In the dwarven fort of Mesamost, zombie camels mauled my two remaining dogs. I had to seal the fort to prevent everybody from trying to bring the dog skeletons back inside.
EDIT:I'm now in the process of making creeping eye armor.

Why hello there, Urist McLiason. Yes, I know I don't have a trade depot yet. That's because the first two migrant waves consisted of a whopping four dorfs between them, so I'm still a bit backlogged on getting anything set up. Perhaps by next year I'll have something for you. Meanwhile, would you like a longland beer biscuit?

you mean elves with loads of stone loaded onto their backs while walking on their hands with dwarves holding their legs to guide them?

Soundmined (yes it was random genned) has started well. 39 Dwarves crowd the main hall, we have no booze, and plenty of rabbit meat. The Brook was dug out, and a wall built to provide a measure of defense; a raised bridge provides access and protection while we organize and try to get the hospital set up. Once we have the cisterns filled, and more importantly the crypts built, then we'll begin training a military. It'll be another year before we get an anvil though.

Doodedoo, embarking to volcano...
HFS activated.
Wtf? I look down and see demonic fortress spanning all the way to aboveground area in a large, square hole.
Bug?

EDIT: Framerate instantly drops to 0. Abandon time.

Then he made grudge wit about 20 other dwarfs (still don't know why - perhaps they were stealing his chair).

Someone was lactating near the mister. There's milk everywhere along the mister's channels now.

Other than that, everything's going rather swimmingly. Namely that the miners who dug the final channels for the mister system got some swimming experience out of it.
A giant toad was interrupting a massive woodcutting operation in the caverns, so the militia put it down without consequence.
The dwarven caravan just arrived. Time to unload a bunch of worthless crap, and take everything they have. It's actually a fairly enormous caravan. I forgot to request sand last year, though I bet brought plenty anyway...
The stoneworkers haven't dug anything new lately, they've all been engraving the main hall. And it takes a long, long time.
I'm rather proud of ezum, our master architect. He's spent the last three years perfecting his skills as a stoneworker, becoming a legendary miner and mason, and adept at engraving. Sadly he hasn't had much chance to train as an architect...
Another one of the individuals I had though was doomed to die of infection has recovered spontaneously. They'll still get to keep the fancy tomb, for now.

I really need to decide on some permanent residences for the dwarves. There are dozens of beds free in the dorms, but generally a tired dwarf collapses where he or she stands, unless they own their own quarters.

Everybody's hauling wood right now. Need something for them to do afterwards, even though my objective is to create a thriving metropolis which they stand around and adore in various ways as much as possible, making friends and falling in love. Then being eaten by trogs, apparently...

There's a goblin axeman chasing an elf around the map.

Wheeee!  I wonder how long until he gets him.   But I think the elf merch may have run off the map - can he?  If so, will the goblins still get him?

A wild troll has appeared!

... about... six z-levels down.  He's interrupting my walling off of the opening of the top of the cavern though.  I guess build a fortification in one of the parts of the walls that are currently finished and let my militia shoot at him from relative safety?

Ambush! But the fort I've been constructing in front of the main entrance isn't finshed yet :(

Everyone inside, raise the only bridge leading inside... safe! Or so I thought...

Now I have the elven mercheant who just happened to be inside trapped with my dorfs. I have no military, only seven woodcutters with axes. Oh, lets see how the militia does when those guys go insane.
I'm also installing cage traps, maybe I can capture some slaves while I'm at it :D

Managing a small fortress here, and early on all was going swimmingly .. the basics were in place and expansion was planned .. we'd just accepted our second migrant wave - taking us just above the 20 dwarf mark - when wolves started prowling near the entrance to our fort ..

One of the said wolves took a fancy to the lone lamb in our pasture - the pet of a relatively under-used dwarf from the first migrant wave - and swifty tore it apart. Needless to say, the owner was somewhat distraught .. and this was compounded when he saw that the poor little sheep's carcass was rotting away on a refuse / corpse stockpile .. tie in that the fortress was out of booze and the badgers that were constantly nipping away at our workers and .. well .. let's just say it pushed him over the edge into a mood. After claiming the Butcher's Workshop he surveyed the pasture for a while, and I feared that he was about to massacre our small collection of creatures .. but no .. not in DF .. that would be far too humane ..

A short while later .. with me nervously watching on .. the Miller decides that enough's enough, and murders a freshly arrived Master Metal Crafter who was minding his own business at the meeting point beside the river! Not content with his actions, the bloodied corpse is dragged back to the Butcher's, where it is (expertly) transformed into a magnificent Dwarf Bone Mace (encircled with Dwarf Bone naturally).

The moral of this tale? Hmm, don't stand idly around by the river? Who knows! But our newly-found Legendary Bone Crafter is now held in high regard within our fledgling home .. if only by myself!  :D

* I appreciate that this kind of event is likely to be "old news" here, but as a new player it encompassed some of the wonderful elements that makes this game stand out.  :)

Holy shit goblin siege.
11 goblins, all bowmen. All I see is arrows flying.
And I still haven't implemented my doomsday device yet.
EDIT:Okay. . . They're hanging out in the caverns for some unexplained reason.

Oh look, a wave of migrants.

And a siege.  And the ramp to the fortress is still covered in magma.

I guess no migrants then.

The first artifact has been made! And it is a War Hammer! A... Pig Bone War hammer, decorated with Yak Bones.
