So, weaponsmith withdraws from society.
He grabs a steel bar and some cut gems.
What does he make?
A steel mace menacing with carnelian spikes.
I gave it to a wrestler.
With something that strong in hand, he's gonna be an epic macedwarf.

The one fortress I decide to start a clothing industry (having discovered how to make them wear new clothes), 177 dwarves on site and not a single one came with clothesmaking skill. "make cloth bag/r", for a year...

GCS was the first cave critter to rear it's ugly head.
A recruit and the wrestler with the artifact are killed.
Then the commander comes and severs it's abdomen.

Had noticed giant cave spider silk off to one side of the 1st caverns, so I deliberately kept my people on the *other* side of the caverns. Well, the GCS decided to pay a visit. Tore up a thresher who was wandering around down there for Armok knows why, but didn't kill him quick. Instead it seemed to be playing with him before dinner, grappling and damaging tiny parts like fingers and toes.

Which gave time for my militia commander, Urvad Raltad, to get down there -- minus his bronze sword, which is the only real weapon in the fort. So what does Urvad do? He takes advantage of the spider's focusing on the thresherdwarf to start wailing on it with his exceptional yak leather shield. This actually begins to do some damage after a little while, so the spider webs him and goes back to finishing up the thresher, finally injecting venom. After a short while, Urvad breaks free and continues to hammer away with a leather shield. Shortly thereafter, the poor thresherdwarf expires, and I'm thinking, "Oh well, it was a valiant effort..." when all of a sudden the combat stops and Urvad's just standing there.

Wait, where's the spider? Did it flee? I check the unit list:

Mondulmat, Giant Cave Spider                     Deceased

:o

So I check the last thing in the combat log:

The militia commander strikes The Giant Cave Spider in the cephalothorax with his =yak leather shield=, tearing the fat and bruising the muscle and bruising the brain!
Kubuk Daturmelbil, Thresher has bled to death.

So...the last sight my poor thresher saw, as the paralysis took hold and he slipped away, was that of Urvad jamming a chunk of hardened yak skin through the spider's brain. At least he died knowing he had been avenged.  :D

Needless to say, Commander Urvad's quarters are set to receive a substantial upgrade.

I just had three gem moods in a row. All of them made red diamond furniture (so glad I had red diamonds):

Gathilrashgur, a red diamond hatch cover
Doren Kukon, a red diamond chain
Gecast Girust, a red diamond table

The first was a possession, the other two resulted in a legendary gem setter (my planter) and gem cutter, respectively.

I am going to have the best meeting hall ever.

Hope the next two moods make a bucket and mechanism.

Well, I've isolated the cause of the repeat crashes. It looks like my save file was corrupted, probably due to overuse of dfclean. I deleted that file and am now playing from my most recent autosave (<3 you autosave backup) which was only ~ 2 ingame weeks behind my main save. I guess the massive stretches of bloodsoaked ground and corpses will have to remain as they are.

On another note, I just had a rather disturbing kill. From the looks of the combat log, two of my Hammerlords and a Vamari swordfox who was with their trade caravan all bit into a Sand Raider hammerman's body and shook him around like a ragdoll in their teeth for several (read: 10) pages of combat report. At the very end, the Vamari ripped one of his arms off in her mouth just before my militia captain gave the mercy-kill with a blow to the skull from his masterwork maul.

My fortress has lasted quite some time, so long that I've delayed upgrading to .25 until she falls.

It's kept protected, mostly from beasts from beneath the earth, by The Vigor of Painting, perhaps my most competant squad ever. They just took in two new recruits after losing two members for the first time in a long time. One was ripped to peices by a cave crocodile, while still managing to give the croc quite a bit of trouble before dying. The other was honourably discharged after having her hands bitten off by the same crocodile.

It was an epic fight, though, and the team won.

You just have to give your squad rope reed fiber spears. The Vigor of Painting? Really?

Maybe they're badass artists of some sort who make masterfully painted renditions of their own battles. Lots of red paint is used.

They are artists, the ground is their canvas, and gore is their medium.
