I am witnessing the beginning of a tantrum spiral.
7 dwarfs, two war dogs and a war jaguar were killed in the most recent siege (as well as the whole group of human tourists, but who cares? Loot!).
One gem setter berserked and was immediately killed. One miner chopped a war dog's head off in a fit of rage, and is now condemned for that.
Taking your bets as to what number the population will drop to before it stops. Negative numbers are tempting, but not eligible.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

How many dwarves did you start with?

My bet is <starting population>/3, rounded up.

Ruletrumpet is now a county, and there's a caravan stuck in the airlock. It refuses to leave. Any ideas?
If it is stuck at the gate smash it
If not, magma and to a lesser degree water is a capable bouncer (in matters of getting them out)  ;D

Just generated a new world in 31.24.
31.25 comes out. Transferred the world to 31.25.

I found a nice little 3x3 flat forest surrounding a one tile lake.
Upon embarking, I notice that my dwarfs are standing on the frozen lake with their wagon.
I ordered one dwarf to dig a channel for when the dwarfs inevitably end up in the lake, while the rest get on hauling duty.

Just before the dwarfs finish getting everything off the ice, I remembered to set up a meeting area so they don't hang out around the old wagon.
Most of the dwarfs went to the new meeting area but one really like the old wagon spot so he went to the bottom of the lake.

They managed to save all their gear, so now they are building a small warehouse to keep it safe from marauding beasts until they can get underground. I'm planning the entrance to the underground will be a tower in the middle of the lake, so I have to wait till it freezes over again.

Then COMBAT REPORT!
Wait, what's going on?
"The Carp is fighting!"
Uh-oh, view report.
"The Giant Badger Boar has become enraged!"

The badger doesn't like the carp. But it doesn't look like he will go into the water after it. I am perdicting endless angry badger spam.

Oh boy, where to begin?

- Found a magma pool at -42z. A++ great, 18z above the one i found last time.
- Found a second magma pool at -51z. Neat.
- First magma pool borders directly up against the second cavern. This means i could unleash dorfy goodness on it at a moments notice. :D
- Second magma pool borders directly up against the third cavern. Same as above.
- Third cavern is AT LEAST 75z in height. I suspect that it's much higher. Just how far down will the magma sea be?

One of my dwarves, called Psychognome Lordwheel (custom first name), got a special name from all the stuff he has killed (he's one of my elite soldiers).

Psychognome Lordwheel, the Vision of Dying

Awesome.

Continuing to pave a route through the first cavern and digging exploratory routes into the second.

Minkot Tangathnish, Tech Head, has given birth to a boy.

Out of curiosity, I check it out.

Asen Lakishcatten (Backchannels) has been content lately.
He is the son of Minkot Trampledtrade and Dodok Trammelink. He is an ardent worshipper of Kirar, a worshipper of Avuz, and a faithful worshipper of Kirar.
He is a citizen of The Paddle of Guilds. He is a member of The Tools of Subtlety.
He was born today, which makes him very young indeed.

Wow, Toady. Just when I thought you couldn't get any snarkier or more detailed.

Also, he already has a "very long" moustache and a "very long" beard, both of which are already braided. One imagines Mom has a lot of free time.

Still no FBs, though I have unearthed both an Olm Man civilization and a Cave Swallow Man civilization. Niether are happy to see me, though they have yet to strike at my strategically-placed alarm dogs.

Depends on what do you want to do with invaders.

If they're armoured, warhammers are your best bet, but you could just use silver instead of iron.

If they're not armoured heavily and you want them to suffer for long with broken bones, then still warhammers.

If you like to send limbs flying and spill blood from stumps everywhere, axes. Also doubles as a woodcutting tool. And dwarves are blue. I like blue.

If you want to pierce their livers and hearts, spears. Makes for more organized bodies instead of mess while being quick and lethal.

If you want to do both of the above, swords.

Maces generally suck - they're like warhammers, but heavier, and you can't make a safe sparring weapon.

*Migrants have arrived!

Hmm, 1, 2, 3...4.  I'm one over the 200 population cap.

*An ambush! Curse them!
Unlucky Bastard, Engraver has been struck down.

Ah that's better.

(love toady's optimizations, 200 'dwarves' at 50 FPS.)

Soon you'll tell us there is also kaolinite, the clay is fire clay, and... wait, there's flux? How? Even if it's marble, it shows up as flux in the overview...

Either way, I like that place indeed. Cold, lots of wood too..
