Well the injured dwarf, who was also my armor/metalsmith, succumbed to dehydration after all the water froze and before I could plumb the aquifer...

However, things do seem to be on an even keel again, getting my subfort setup (barracks and main hall), my storage is complete aside from setting up a farm, the caravan brought enough food and drink to last me a little bit.  Nearly got my wall and door (floodgates) constructed so as long as a siege doesn't show up in the next season or so it should be ok.

Question about the military.

I've got my dwarves selected to use crossbows, but yet one of them is a spearman, the rest wrestlers.

How do I fix this?

Let them train into marksdwarves.  Their profession shown is simply what they're best at.  A rank 9 spearman equipped with an axe will show up as a spearman, even though he's using an axe.

If you go into the military(m) menu then go to equipment(e) you can see what they are equipped with to make sure they have the right weapons, don't forget to equip bolts/arrows in the ammunition(f) menu too and make sure they have access to quivers.

But other then that yea, dwarves always show up as whatever they are best at.

Now this is just weird.
They've all got their weapons equipped, crossbows.
Ammunition is selected and I can see it sitting in the stockpile right now.
They've got archery targets. They got a barracks, but only the militia commander is training.
They've been in the military for a month or so now, what's wrong?

Archers are buggy.  Build 10 archery targets (or however many you need) and make each one into a separate archery range, with all of them assigned to that squad.  Then, leave your archers off duty, with their civilian tasks like hauling and masonry turn off.  When enlisted dwarves have nothing to do, they train, even while off duty, so archers will run to the nearest free target for their squad and shoot at it.

Just because you need to make 10 barracks, doesn't mean those barracks can't be within 10 squares of each other.

Are they all assigned to the squad for training, and aiming in the right direction?  You have to make sure they're firing from the right side, and they also cannot be adjacent to the target, they need some spare room to fire.

I'm meeting pretty much every requirement, none are training.

now I'm under siege and all my dwarves will rush out the second I order my ONE FUCKING SQUAD to go fight.

God damn.

Well, Silverbeak is back on its feet.  Its walled in so we can hold out (though all that is holding back the potential horde is floodgates so if any building destroyers show up..), we have food (thanks to an Elf Caravan..), and most of our industry is set up.

Now I just need to set up bedrooms and start training up my military (better late then never).

Goblins. A lot of them. Every single one is riding a cave crocodile.

Well got my military loaded up and training, got a moody dwarf who claimed my metalsmith's forge (fingers crossed!)

ETA: Rikkirnitom, "The Whiskered Planets", a sliver chain leggings

This is a sliver chain leggings.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  This object menaces with spikes of silver.

Ok so not the greatest item in the world but hey, far better then a really nice mechanism or something.

I dunno dude, I had a mechanism a few times.  I built it into a lever inside my dining hall.  Legendary dining hall, and easy access to my front gate's panic switch.
