Quick question on floor support

I thought I had this down, but a test dig resulted in collapse.  The central tile is a natural floor with open space (channel) above it.  I thought that I could support the floor by leaving a wall underneath while channeling the floors around it.  Here is Wall, Channel, Floor:

Am I missing something, or can floors not be supported only from underneath?

A floor is supported by a wall underneath it.  (In fact, it is CREATED by a wall if one is built.)

In that diagram, the z+1 stuff will fall if not supported from the sides, though.

Nothing should have collapsed according to your diagram. Perhaps one of the dwarves made a mistake?

Yeah, I'm thinking it must have been the order in which the Miners dug.  If I channel one side at a time and immediately install grates, I don't see how even they could screw it up.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you are doing, but keep in mind that support cannot be applied diagonally, and grates do not provide support, themselves.

support cannot be applied diagonally

This is not entirely true since you can build wall over edges.

What happens when you build overhanging walls is that a floor, including natural floors and the walkable tiles on top of walls but not grates or bridges, can support the floor part of adjacent tiles. Constructed walls include the floor under the wall, so they are something that can be supported by an adjacent floor.

So, you've created a stand-alone pillar below a chute, right? From any sideview it looks like this...

X_X  @ z+1
___  @ z
_X_  @ z-1
XXX  @ z-2 (not shown)

("_" = empty space, NOT "floor". But the "Wall" on z-1 does create a default floor above it on level z, as do the walls on z-2 on z-1. )


Nothing looks wrong with that. :/
