As I browsed the forums today, it struck me that we really don't have a general discussion thread for "other games", so, barring previously created threads, could this be our place to just talk about gaming in general?

I don't really know if there IS a lot of interest in a thread like this, but it's here now if you'd like it.

To get the ball rolling, I'll ask a question that's been nagging me recently:

"Who is the good guy in the main Metal Gear series? Is it Solid Snake? Or is it Naked Snake?"

... and who is the main character? Naked or Solid?

Honestly I've always kinda wondered the same. All of the different "Snake"s just sort of blend together for me, ala:

lol, I figured as much! That's fair I guess. I just got done playing Rising so it's gotten me all interested in the main series now.

Note: I'm not saying that because I'm an expert on the games, just that I'm wondering the same thing in case somebody else has an answer.

It's probably Solid, I think. Mostly in that he never becomes villainous from what I am aware.

Depends on where in the series you are.

MGS 1,2, and 4 all have solid snake.  MSG 3 has you playing as Naked Snake, and is a prequel to the other games.

Naked Snake becomes the new Big Boss at the end of 3.  Solid, as well as Liquid, are clones of the Boss.  Liquid has all the recessive genes, and Solid has all of the dominant genes, because genetics work that way.

So Naked Snake is Solid's dad but not really.  That's also why they look pretty much the same.

It is best to think about it this way

Snake is a code name

One day someone with the codename of Snake was REALLY great at his job... so much so that the codename was passed down to only the best soldiers... BUT they modified it slightly.

Raiden AKA Jack the Ripper AKA Snake took the name.

Yes.

They gave Raiden the snake codename in the mission in 2.  The whole point of the mission was to make him as good as the original snakes.

Then in 4 he went back to being Raiden, because thunder god, and also because you play as solid snake.

Solid Snake was given Snake because he and Liquid were clones of Naked Snake, who was Snake first.
