Other than as a big finger to the elves, what is your reason for wanting to get rid of the trees?

Is that not reason enough ?

The solution is hordes of woodcutters. And then make wooden paved roads everywhere.

Well, that sure is reason one! Damend tree huggers...

Is it for access or FPS?

But FPS are reason 2... i noticed a huge drop since those tree are invading my land, and is easier to manage some tons of logs than the full tree (Magma!). It's a shame because with some tinkering and some hacking (cleanowned and autodump) i'm managing to keep my fortress at 50-60 FPS with almost 200 dwarves and with the third cavern open and patrolled!

Of course it is, I was just wondering if there was anything else.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress. Where peaceful death of old age is something nobody sees coming.
it turns out Dog Bone Doctors aren't very good at doctoring.

FPS. Also, you get wood, and trees are messy. Well at least I spare the fruit-bearing ones.

I still remember a good dozen of my dwarves climbing into a... I think it was a fungiwood trying to kill a giant bat. Vengeful thoughts, you know.
And they didn't want to get down so I had to cut the tree.

It WAS pretty hilarious, though.

Can't swear for the new version, but used to be that if you dug out the soil immediately beneath the surface, no trees would grow directly above your excavations. Something about no room for roots.

Doesn't work for me in 40.24.
