atm i only have one adamantium warhammer and an adamantium mail shirt.

Adamantium is extremely light weight. Amazing for mail armor and edged weapons. Not so much for bludgeoning weapons.

Use it for your hammerer. He'll never injure anyone.

Heh, so not an utter waste after all. Nice. (Bludgeoning weapons are based on weight - featherweight adamantium hammers... kinda like boffers.)

Adamantium breastplates (etc.), axes ftw. Spears if you want to mix it up, shortswords are ~about~ the same as axes. Steel hammers too, best weapon against creatures w/ no internal organs, etc.

And, Dampe (and all new posters) - do yourself a favour - use the Wiki first, to get the general info as a starting point, then ask more specific questions that you need answered.  We're happy to answer the easy questions, happy to parrot the basics, but you might as well use the experience on these boards for something more than that. Either way, GL!

Oh, and the guide for training melee weapons (aka "sparring") popped up to page 1 again:

i know i know. i use silver warhammers the most thanks to their weight and the wikis claims that they are amazing weapons thanks to their small contact area(and due to embarking on three different locations with nothing else except galena that sorta made silver weaponry a tradition in my forts...) im atm trying to make my military commander relinquish his hold over the adamantium warhammer so i can scrap it...but the fucker isnt letting go.

Don't scrap it - seriously, assign it to your Hammerer (a later-fort Noble position). When he metes out justice, it'll just kinda tickle. ;)

(Also great to assign gimps as Hammers. Anyone with a bad/missing leg - justice is a'comin', just not very fast...)

Why would I need soap?
Dwarves aren't really known for their cleanliness.

Cleaning wounds. What, you expect them to waste perfectly drinkable alcohol on that cut?

What ores yield useful metals?

Galena, tetrahedrite, native silver, and horn silver can yield silver, which is useful for bludgeoning weapons.
Tetrahedrite, malachite, and native copper yield copper. Can make rather poor weapons and armor (but better than no metal armor/weapons, for sure). Used to make bronze.
Cassiterite yields tin. Combine with copper to make bronze, which is decent for weapons/armor if you don't have access to steel.
Hematite, limonite, and magnetite yield iron. On par with bronze for weapons/armor. Used to make steel.
Native gold, native platinum, and native aluminum yield the metals you'd expect from the names. These aren't useful for armor or weapons, but their high value makes them a good choice for furniture, statues, etc.

ok good news is:i finally got my military commander to drop the adamantine hammer.

bad news is. i got no idea where she dropped it.

even worse news is: i retired and unretired the fortress and the dwarfs have thrown all of their personal belongings on the floor, destroyed all of their chests and beds and there is puke EVERYWHERE.

Refuse stockpile outside. In future, make sure your food stockpiles are large enough.
