It tends to really depend on how much they affect the immediate setting. If they don't directly interact much in the present, then they can probably be left shrouded in ambiguity. But as soon as they start doing stuff, having non-neglible cults and whatnot, they'll need some sort of abstracted motivation.

Indeed. Even if that motivation doesn't have a real explicable REASON behind it.

Like, trying to blow up the universe.

Though having it be a reason that makes no sense is fun too.

Say, demolishing the universe to build a transdimensional superhighway.

Or to affect some multiversal stock market or currency exchange.

I personally prefer non-transcendental motivations. No need to give it any human-like abstractions, just figure out what would allow it to reproduce/grow/expand the most and go with that.

I like taking a simple idea and growing it over time. Most of my characters and plots usually start laughably simple, but they get complicated and grow fractally as people explore them.

My ones tend to have some sort of idea. And then in the process of making the setting, one bit just runs haywire, goes out of control, and by the end all the other original components get replaced and I end up with something complex built around the bit that grew out of control.
