As in, literally foxes. Who lived for a long time.

Some Kitsune are. Those are classed as Foxborn and are relatively rare compared to hereditary Kitsune or accidental Kitsune. Kumo and Kiri are both Hereditary Kitsune, although Kiri acts more like a Foxborn than would be considered normal.
