So, this thread has been dead for a week, but I just saw the movie, and I loved every minute of it. Max is played straight, Furiosa is a BAMF, the cars are fucking sweet, etc etc feminism blah blah.

10/10, go watch it.

Probably, and it's fucking true. The only thing more badass than her name is her actions.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Doesn't Imperator Furiousa translate to something like General Fury? That sounds like a supervillain name. I love it.

It looks like faux-Latin to me.

More like commander in old latin, but it was eventually adopted into the general title of the Roman 'emperors' (French, derived from imperator), so that would be Emperor Anger/Fury/Rage/whatever.

"Furiosa" is "furious" (adjective), not "fury" (noun) - that would be "furia".

I'm trying to remember what she did and I'm sort of drawing a blank. I don't remember her being very awesome, though.

That was one of the things I loved about the ending- now that the vile evil villain has been dethroned, The Citadel is ruled with a literally iron fist by Imperator Furiosa, a maimed veteran raider who attained her position by disposing of her former boss, and in all likelihood aided by a nepotistic cabal of bandit hags.

Justice and freedom will surely follow!

Well, stealing a prized War Rig right under the nose of a terrifying overlord then driving it straight across the desert with all his favorite wives under the unknowing watch of the Warboys who were meant to make sure exactly this never ever happened is pretty badass. Along with the Immortan Joe slaying.
Mad Max did a lot of the stunts but he was being dragged along for the ride most of the film. I'd say Furiosa and Mad Max are equally badass in different directions.

Neither of these really struck me as badass. The former especially, since she managed it pretty much entirely through abusing her position rather than any particular challenge-overcoming merits of her own.

The latter was better, but it still wasn't really a fight or anything. I thought Immortan Joe got more points for the final snarl than Furiosa did for the kill.

Then again, I can't really remember anything particularly awesome Max did either. Expendable Warboys were the real and frequently sung heroes of that movie.

I wasn't worried about this, so much as how the new leadership would fare at controlling resources.  Immortan Joe was cold-hearted enough to deny people, and the presentation made me think maybe that was the only thing that made the place sustainable.  Will it stay that way?

That was kinda my thought too. I mean, it's heart warming to watch all the Mothers just up and decide to give the peoples water, finally. But one wonders if it's actually sustainable. The movie never really indicates whether Immortal Joe kept reducing what he'd give out of spite, greed, control or necessity. But I suppose if they wanted to make resource conservation a theme, they would have brought it up as its own problem.

Everyone cheered when they were given the water and found out Immortan was dead. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been happy he was decapitated if he wasn't a tyrant.

Then again, I can't really remember anything particularly awesome Max did either.
Max accidentally stopped a crossbow bolt from killing him using his hand, that was pretty awesome. There was that really cool fight between him and Furiosa where he was handcuffed the entire time. There was the early chase right after he was captured when he broke out, beat up a bunch of dudes, jumped onto that hook and was then fairly recaptured because the mooks aren't incompetent. He did this, that was cool. He was on the hood of the war rig spitting gas into the intake. He was jumping on cars and killing and throwing people and he blew up the bullet farmer off-screen.

Did we even watch the same movie? Because I remember a movie that was packed with some killer and for once literally non-stop action. :P

The way I read Immortan Joe, everything he does is about control.  His outfit is about continuing to look strong even though he's a dying old man, his whole faux-Norse religion is designed to keep his warboys fanatically loyal to him.  Which you'll notice, none of the movers and shakers in his organization actually seem to be believers.  Just the grunts.  His Citadel says "I'm huge and imposing and you'll never get rid of me" in the same way that a medieval castle must have.  And of course the water gives him control over the population.

That's why he can't let the wives get away.  He can't allow any dissent or weakness; the whole thing is too high-profile for him to look the other way.  Not that he WANTS to, but even if he did.  Can't let his wives and a traitor embarrass him.
