Mad Max: Fury Road [SPOILERS]
« on: May 17, 2015, 03:03:48 pm »

Here's my spoiler-discussion thread for Mad Max. You have been warned!

I saw the movie in 3D yesterday, and it was fantastic. The muscle car tank that the bullet farm boss rode was my favorite vehicle in the whole movie. There is just an impeccable amount of detail in this film. No gratuity but plenty of violence, lots of speed, mad sick guitar shredding (the rest of the time I thought the soundtrack was somewhat uninspired, BUT it always set the mood). Cherize and Tom Hardy both gave an amazing performance. Some of the best, most creative and impressive props I've ever seen in a movie. The stunts were amazing.

RIP the Interceptor. :<

Does it have the same "Gay BDS&M on a hot summer day" feel that the other two mad max films had?

if so, I will probably pass.

Don't you mean Thunderdome? The first movie was pre-apocalypse and it was just a dystopian story about Australian cops with really fast cars who chase insanely violent gangs of biker criminals.

And no, it's nothing like Thunderdome. It's still got that feeling, but not as B-movie. It's a much more refined setting, and I liked it a lot. The vehicles and combat are quite orky.

There are three (3) movies in the original series, Mad Max, The Road Warrior, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

I forgot about Road Warrior. But yeah this new movie is a sequel/reboot  of Road Warrior and Thunderdome. There are some references to the old movies. His kid is a girl in the short flashbacks (I'm glad they were just flashes instead of full blown scenes) instead of a little boy, he still has the leg brace from when Toe Cutter blew out his knee, he's still got the Interceptor and his sawn-off shotgun.

Apparently some people are claiming that this movie is veiled feminist propaganda. Is this true?
No? I don't know. I was busy watching men shed blood and gasoline.

Veiled feminist propaganda?  No, no it is not.  It is stunningly, wantonly, aggressively feminist in a way no propaganda ever could be, and makes no bones about it.

It is also aggressively macho, aggressively objectivist, aggressively communist, aggressively heroic, aggressively defeatist, and pretty much any other theorist viewpoint or interpretation you can imagine.

The point of The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome, and every one of the countless ripoffs of those movies that's been made in the last 35 years, is to explore the idea of what people would do after the end of the world as we know it.  What kind of world people would build from nothing if left to their own devices.  Fury Road presents Max basically the same way as the originals, as a taciturn guy wandering through other people's philosophical arguments, while showing off a bunch of different answers to that overall question.  And every single one is demonstrated with 100% full throttle aggression.  That's the takeaway.

What Aqizzar said. Me, though? I did not perceive that movie as having any sort of moral message. I saw it as an exercise in objectively good storytelling and the director doing his damnedest to craft creative, practical and interesting action.

Edit: I mean, Max kicked Furiosa's ass the first time they met. That doesn't seem like something a feminist director would throw into his film. The action was immensely fair in my opinion. Even the bad guys got their licks in.

That's exactly the point.  Anyone who thinks there's a singular message to read from the movie is already looking for one.  There's a bunch of competing tones, and while the morally-supportable characters win in the end, that's a function of the story more than anything else.

The directing went to great pains to make it clear that nothing about the characters made any one more capable than another besides what makes them individual characters.  For instance, I've heard some people saying they wanted to be mad about Furiosa pointedly making a rifle shot after Max proved he couldn't (one of the movie's rare pieces of humor).  But then like a minute later, Max blows shit up off screen and comes back covered in someone else's blood.  That's some storytelling.

Put another way: Movie reviewers for both The NewYorker and Breitbart News absolutely loved it, and for entirely different reasons.  Fury Road is truly a movie with something for everyone to enjoy.

God, I hope so   I can just see it corrupting all those young minds with their awesome feminist road explosions. Probably going to go see it in theaters just for the feminist agenda.

I was going to wait to see it, but after all the feminism drama I've decided to see it in theaters. I think the last movie I saw in theaters was like....Hell Boy.

The irony of a clearly machismo fueled black leather parade of explosions and tricked out cars-- being used as a vehicle for feminist agendas?

Thats the kind of thing you just cant miss.

For real doe.

That and I've always liked Charlize Theron. She's played a hard ass in a lot of movies and people are saying this is a good performance. I'd like to see her playing that role in a movie that doesn't suck ass.
