Genetics?

In the wiki, it doesn't have much to say: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Genetics. This implies that it's only for Dwarves.

Do we know if animals inherit genetics? Would it be a worthwhile side-project (in the name of Dwarven Science!), to dedicate Urist McMendel to such an endeavour?

If so, what's the quickest breeding embark animal? Cavies? Rabbits? (Cats?)
