[snark]

Toady earned his degree at Texas A&M. Here is his dissertation, Flat chains in banach spaces.

[/snark]

Thanks! I'm still working on the stones and I'm really excited to be pushing out this release. I popped a Natural color scheme into my game, checked out Adventure Mode and was really satisfied with the results. Even though the tile overrides are only halfway done, I'm elated to see that the game is shaping up to look like my mockup.

Toady earned his bachelor's at University of Washington and his doctorate at Stanford, actually; he was a postdoc at Texas A&M right before quitting to work on DF, though.

Man, you read my mind.  I was going to suggest Vherid's Natural color scheme but I didn't know if it would clash with your brighter dwarf set.  But they pop out nicely on the colors you chose.

Ayep. I'm doing my best to ensure compatibility with pretty much any color scheme. I'm sketching out all of the various items and tiles in the default color scheme, which I imagine as a sort of worst-case scenario when it comes to color. :U

Another neat thing...All of GemSet's graphics were drawn with a single 32-color indexed palette, so recoloring everything drawn thus far would only take a matter of minutes. I might include a more muted version for Natural if there ends up being enough demand for it.

Interesting...It seems I'm handling negative space in a really similar way smirk did. I'll take a look-see through the tiles to get some ideas.

...Erm. It seems the DFFD link is broken. Anyone got a copy of that tileset on-hand?

That's a very old thread. I didnt even knew about it. O.o It would be a miracle if you can unburrow that tileset.

I'm not entirely sure, but since you use inverted colors for the magmaproof versions, wouldnt it look a bit weird if you have a white or light-grey magmaproof inorganic, and next to it a dark-grey or black non-magmaproof inorganic?

The ingame color might influence the end result and people cant tell if it's a dark magmaproof or a bright non-magmaproof material.

Reactions automatically detect if a material is magmaproof or not, most players know these materials by heart. Not sure what my alternative suggestion would be, (using an icon would look weird), but maybe dont differentiate the inorganic walls based on magma/nonmagmaproof?

Maybe it's enough to just do that for the item. A boulder looks like a boulder, but a magmaproof boulder has a little volcano icon? A fuel boulder has a little flame? That way people can see it directly on the items they have in their stockpiles, but the inorganic walls/caves/caverns still look natural, without any ingame help-icons.

EDIT: Sorry for being a bit incoherent.

Maybe instead of magmaproof and non being differentiated by color, they could be e.g. mirror images, or rotated differently?

I was going to suggest making the icons either different sizes or different intensities (white vs gray on the tile), but I like Button's idea better.  Only even mentioning it to feel like I contributed something :)

Rotation might look a bit odd? Maybe not mirroring though. I'd have to see it to give a definite opinion.  :P

Still, I absolutely love the idea of having different icons for the stuff, as long as it's easy to identify. Those icons are great!

Hmm...there are a lot of ideas I could do for conveying magma-safeness and fire-safeness, aren't there? For now, I'll stick with the different background colors and once the tile overrides are released we'll see how they look in-game. If people don't like the background colors, changing them all to be the same would be super-easy with BAMM! and some Notepad++ wizardry. ;)

Hooo boy...The evil grasses are a mess, right?

Thankfully, they'll be a lot more subtle once I release the tile overrides for GemSet. They'll still animate and have funky colors but they'll be much darker and smaller so that they don't clutter your vision like that.

By the way...Tile overrides are nearly finished! All that's left are the trees and liquids. After that, I just need to touch some old stuff up and wait for some TWBT bugfixes.
