I definitely think that using people's names is OP, primarily because you don't have to spend a point to recharg a name.  Although, if the name reduces the effect enough, it might be fair.  Is "break(2) Beirus" stronger than "break gaze"?  Because they effectively cost the same.
But they don't though, one costs 3, the other costs 2. Names still require you to use pool, just not to recharge them. Unless you want to have them be some sort of understood part of everyone's list that requires charging too.
Gonna stop you there. He's including the cost of recharging in the spell.
Break Gaze: 2 (cast) + 2(recharge) = 4
Break(2) Beirus: 3 (cast) + 1(recharge) = 4
Ah, thats what he means. Well then yeah, I suppose it does. Guess we'll just have to make them rechargeable. Or get rid of them all together.

Maybe you can't use someone's name until you somehow learn their 'true' name (wizards use pseudonyms for this purpose) and put it into your wordlist.
I don't think anyone would ever learn anyone's true name though. I can't really see how that would happen.
Maybe if you hold something in your hands and make a Will roll you can learn any words associated with that object (up to your Memory limit). you can learn someone's name by doing that with some of their clothes or a bodypart.
And I like the idea of an Aperture-Science style test chamber. different rooms sliding around and turrets and stuff.

I had a couple of thoughts if you're just looking for ideas, but without knowing what your setup looks like on the back end no idea how feasible they are.

Well, it was mainly a way of forcing people consider which words they use carefully since they just can't spam them without cost.
I had this idea while browsing with my morning coffee. What if you didn't have to manually recharge a word, but instead the word was put on cooldown when it was used? And the cooldown is proportionate to the power pumped into it? So using Fire(5) would make it so you couldn't use the Fire word for a while, but Fire(1) every turn or every other turn, depending on when you handle the cooldown. You would have to figure out whether the cooldown period is tied to the word or the spell (i.e., does Metal(1) Sword(1) Storm(1) have a 1-turn cooldown or a 3-turn cooldown, with the latter being less open to "abuse"), but I think that's manageable.

Thoughts? I like it, but I'm biased. :)

Counterspelling is already possible. It's just that no one chooses to do it. I mean, it would literally just be a case of saying words in reaction to someone else's words and succeeding in your speed roll and potency roll. I mean, when sy kept spamming gaze break there was nothing to stop toaster from just saying "reflect(2)"  (well, he didn't have the word, but if he did have that word, it would work) and then it would just be a roll of their respective potency to see if it reflected or not.

Your way of recharging words might work, but I'm still leaning towards not having word lists at all, at least to test.

My interpretation was a little more literal, but yeah. Still, I think people will tend to prefer offense to defense if they can't do both (with some exceptions like Toaster going clockwork when he was bleeding out).

Test away, then! Should be interesting.

Couple of thoughts. Everyone start with a decently sized pool, but people can increase it. No starting word lists, and you can use any words, but, once you use it, that's it, it's done, or, if you want to use a word repeatedly, you can use x amount of pool to keep it and that's how you build up your word list.

my proposition is to remove stats and word lists altogether - make it entirely creativity + luck based.

Which could be an interesting experiment, but how would you progress? What's your endgame?

You could after every kill, get a bonus to a word of your choice. Or a +1 that could be used at the time of your choice to help a roll

Would you really want a minimalistic RTD?  There's quite a few of those around already..

I personally like the idea of personal words lists.

The problem with personal word...Hmm.

Actually. I think I might have an idea.

How about a combination? You have a finite word list but ONLY for nouns? So that you are forced to sort of specialize in a particular type of matter to use. Admittedly stuff Like "Gaze Break"  would still be able to be used infinitely...hmm. The problem is that personal wordlists greatly restrain what anyone can do and you don't get a good back and forth. People just create a bunch of things to throw at each other. You can't really react via magic.

How about every turn you can swap two (charged) words out for two other words per point of <whatever> you have?
You don't have to every turn, and in combination with the cooldown it could serve to be very interesting.

Objective-oriented gameplay that tracks progress towards your ultimate objective.
I don't count becoming all-powerful as a valid endgame. bonus stats are tools, not objectives.

might have to set your own goals though. It's something that I'm used to doing anyway.

How many rooms should this new arena have? I'm thinking of generating one with maybe 8-12.
