On Break duration and Idle period
« on: May 14, 2015, 01:59:05 pm »

I don't have a problem with dwarf taking their breaks from time to time.
However a dwarf who did nothing for months taking his 14 days of vacation just when I need him usually makes me a little angry. Usually I solve this by assigning him to a special burrow called "Siren".

My suggestion isn't to completely disable break for idle dwarfs, but at least if he hadn't worked for like half year make the break much shorted like 2-3 days.

From technical side I think it should be solved by making longer* idle times increase a value that reduces duration of the next break.

Keep in mind that it depends upon the personality of the dwarf in question.

Some dwarves are industrious, and never take breaks at all.  (At least, not the "on break" break, but still sleep and such.) I remember one person complaining that he got a starting 7 so lazy that they almost never went OFF break, and almost starved themselves to death before some migrants came in and saved them.

You might want to try using Dwarf Therapist to screen out dwarves with low dutifulness, activity level, or singlemindedness from important jobs, and leave the lazy dwarves to haul or receive Unfortunate Accidents for their laziness.

Some dwarves just need to be kept perpetually busy, the instant they run out of jobs they break or throw parties.  My planter did that nine times in a row.  NINE!  It got so bad I just let him and enabled someone else as a grower.  2/3 seeds wasted is better than 0/3 planted.

It's also an unfortunate truth that most dwarves have terrible stats.

You never know when you might need a berserk dwarf to set loose somewhere.

Quote from: Dev Log (01/21/2015)
Continuing to go through stuff -- breaks and generic parties are gone, needs are in, and people go to hang out at taverns and temples according to their needs.
The new need-based system that's going to replace generic 'on break' status may well take care of this.  I would expect dwarves to spend idle time taking care of any needs they can satisfy, rather than just standing around waiting until they decide to go on break.  For more information on the new system, search the dev log for 'needs'.

Of course, knowing Toady, it may well break things at the same time.

I doubt he's getting rid of the propensity of dwarves with specific traits to go on break, though, especially since that's largely THE function of a few of the personality traits he just spent time revising, and some of the values are things like "Merrymaking", which presumably means some dwarves are going to be extra likely to dance or play music of their own volition.
