Volc's had seen some weird things in the Guard, and it seemed like this was going to be another one of those days. He almost considered not telling Elodie about the masked figure, but did so anyway.

[Caellath]

Tarkhal frowned at the idea, though invisibly due to his helmet. "He has living relatives and exposing his brain isn't too likely to help us. It might, however, get us in trouble. Let the Arbites take care of autopsies." He then turned to the bodyguard. "For how long has this orb been in this house?"

Volc's had seen some weird things in the Guard, and it seemed like this was going to be another one of those days. He almost considered not telling Elodie about the masked figure, but did so anyway.

"Are you sure it wasn't a servant?" Elodie asked sharply. "Which way did he go?"

[Cheesecake]

"Depends on how involved with this you want to get."

The bounty hunter looks at Eizen for a second, sizing up the situation. He obviously recognizes something is up, and weighs his chances. "Involved enough to get a shot at those Babyfaces. Preferably a headshot."

He then addressed the bodyguard. "We have a very powerful person as our patron, and it's in their interests to discover what exactly is causing this manner of event in order to reach the source and cull it. Your master wasn't the first and it might not be the last if we don't act quickly."

"All the rage, to be honest. Nobles wanting a bit of excitement tend to go off and buy heretical stuff. Not too heretical, no, bad for their name. Heretical enough to delude themselves into thinking they're a Throne Agent or something." He glares balefully at the orb. "Guess Lans got unlucky and got the real thing...."

"Perhaps. Does he have any family or House members of note that would object? We don't need to make enemies unnecessarily."

Tesera would know that although Lans Guljian was probably a failure to his noble family, they'd still be mad if they didn't get the body first. More of a stain on honor rather than actual care for a family member who wasted thousands of Thrones and indebted their house.

He then turned to the bodyguard. "For how long has this orb been in this house?"

"Three, four months maybe. Why?"

[UXLZ]

"How violent is that... Gang?"

Babyfaces... What a stupid name.

[Cheesecake]

"Offworld, are you? Pretty violent then, by your standards. Here, they're standard fare with other Cloudboy gangs." He pauses and realizes you might not know what Cloudboys are. "Noble kids who've got no chance at the inheritance, basically. They run around the mid or lower hives flaunting their clothes and guns. The Babyfaces decided to hop aboard the smuggling bandwagon."

[UXLZ]

"I'm not sure you know what my standards are... How well equipped are they? If they're just noble brats with no actual training they shouldn't be that dangerous unless there are dozens of them."

Eizen felt he was talking a little weird compared to normal... Might have been probing that orb. Stupid orb.

[Twinwolf]

"Perhaps. Does he have any family or House members of note that would object? We don't need to make enemies unnecessarily."

"Regardless of personal relations, his family would be angered and insulted if they didn't get the body first. A stain upon their honor, is how they would see it."

[Caellath]

"Knowing how long it took for the orb to drive someone to madness and subsequent suicide is valuable information." Tarkhal rubbed his helmet's chin and began thinking about the situation. The next step would be investigating the lower hive, and though he wouldn't miss the better clothes too much, that did mean his land speeder would have to be left behind for the time being.

The scribe sighed. "Our next stop should be that Screaming Wheel then." Tarkhal's gaze focused on the bodyguard. "It seems most of the servants ran away. I'd understand if you'd rather stay here until the authorities arrive to take care of legal matters, though in that case I'd like if you could give us some directions so we may find that bar. In case you want to come with us, things would certainly be easier."

How is the bodyguard dressed, again? Depending on that Tarkhal might tell him we need him to wear more inconspicuous clothing.

Eizen responds almost as soon as Tarkhal finishes speaking.

"It's not "how long it took" it's "what turned it on". The orb would have driven him to madness in less than a minute with the pressure it was exerting when we came in here."

He had felt its pressure on his mind. No way it took months and months of constant effect to drive this noble insane. No way.

He went with the rest of the servants. Should we go after him? What happened to Guljian?

Volc wished he had a com-bead and knew what was going on inside. In the Guard, lack of communication got artillery shots dropped on you.

The Sister regarded the psyker. If the orb had swiftly driven the man mad... what effect might it have had on the psyker who stared into it's depths? She muttered another prayer to the God-Emperor and turned away."If it may activate again, we need to get rid of it or destroy it somehow."

The scribe rose a hand. "I might not be an expert in occult matters, but what if destroying the orb releases foul energies or even a daemon? And if we get rid of it otherwise, it might continue to do its work. Relinquishing it to our employer might be the correct course of action here. Besides, the diaries may tell how long it had actually been exerting its power; if the writings indicate previous madness then it as well have been prolonged exposure, correct?" Tarkhal takes a moment to think as he reads some papers of the journal.

"Is the orb still exerting that 'pressure' you talked about?" His question was, of course, directed at Eizen.

[UXLZ]

"It's possible it was exerting some sort of influence before it was fully activated, but the noble couldn't have resisted its full power for several months. Perhaps it had some other purpose, and drove him mad once that other purpose was done? I'm not sure if it contains a daemon, and I'll concur with sending it to our employer, none of us have the expertise to deal with it anyway."

It was probably dangerous to check again, but he'd managed to avoid it the last time. Stupid orb.

Eizen says one more thing before he attempts to focus once more.

"If I start gibbering, knock me unconscious. Shoot me if you can't."
