This. I sorta tried something like that once with Rosedale. Not so much the extensive system, it was all basically me making shit up completely at random and rolling for a few things, but one thing that happened was a week or so in I deleted the OP information and I was planning to gradually delete all update posts, to keep the players using their actual memory and to flip them the fuck out (it was a creepypasta esque thing) but the game pretty much ended right after that due to other stuff.

You play a guy who is in charge of defence of something, you have resources to spend to prepare for the next attack (building fortifications, training militia, hiring soldiers, buying weapons or whatever)

It wouldn't really have to be contrived. If it's in SAO, reach the top. The dungeon provides battles. If it's ALO, say there's going to be an update to add new quest areas and the players are beta testers. Or maybe it's the SAO incident, but on the American server rather than the Japanese one.

Well, that's why I said it could take place on the American server. In the light novel, it mentions that the game's official language is English, implying it would have United States and probably England servers. If the game is on one of those, no interaction with the characters of the anime necessary.
