Tell me a little about the Martian rebels.

The rebel army called themselves the Martian Defense Force, or MDF for short. Their government's a republic just like USF, but with more liberal leanings, hence the name Alternative Republican Party. I think their goal was to set up some kind of sovereign state. Most planets aren't happy with the senate representation these days. It wasn't quite like that big, fervent Communist movement 5000 years ago, but it got pretty close. The ARP was fairly popular within the Sol system, outside of Terra, and I heard that they even had some outside backing from major players in the galactic mining industry. Don't ask me who they were though. I keep up with current events because I like to know what's going on in the galaxy but I'm, er, apolitical.. I don't have any particular leanings.

Anyways, basically these guys were a bunch of USF Army regulars leftover from the Outer Wars. From what I heard they were pretty unhappy with the conditions on Mars. They pretty much switched over to the government's side wholesale because of that, aside from a few hundred guys who refused to join the rebellion that they shipped back to USF, but otherwise the populous of Mars was entirely behind their leaders. All their gear was surplus, so they took whatever equipment we left lying around and put it to use. We had strict orders to sabotage any vehicles or fixed guns that had become disabled rather than allow them to fall into the hands of the enemy. That's a pretty normal order when it comes to warfare but.. The brass really hammered it into our heads later on when more DEWs and GEVs started showing up on the battlefield, this time in rebel colors.

Tell me about the United Solar Federation.

USF is a republican federation of planets that spans 10 systems in the Milky Way galaxy, they formed nearly two thousand years ago and have been dominant since 500 years ago after they defeated the Hegemony. It's the largest human organization in the history of our species. There have been a lot of independence movements over the last few decades, but Mars was the biggest coup of them all. It's got people thinking lately, about the Federation, about the Senate.. But I'm happy living in the Federation, I'm not really looking for a change. That's why I fight, for happiness.

You fight for...happiness?

I don't have a family, so that's what I do. I fight for my own happiness. I've never really talked about this before, it's kind of weird hearing my philosophy out loud. Makes me sound like some kind of warhawk. I don't enjoy war, I just want to protect my way of life, and I think fighting for the USFA is the best way to do that.

Tell me about the events leading up to the Martian war.

ARP's been around for a long time, but it wasn't until the Outer Wars happened that they really started gaining momentum. A lot of the USFA recruits came from Sol system to go bring peace to the galactic frontier. The loss of manpower was one of the bigger causes of a massive recession that started in Sol and rippled outward to other systems. Most troopers brought their families with them because they could afford it, fighting in the modern age is for the lower and also the middle class, and had them settle on the frontier. But Mars is mining country and for most of the boys from the red planet, even adding in their soldier's salary, it wasn't enough to pay for their wife or children's passage. Relativity meant that a lot of those poor troopers didn't get to come back to their families. Even their children's children had already emigrated to some other system to find better prospects. Meanwhile the ARP had been gaining a lot of popular support, so when those miserable Mars troopers returned home, with no cause and no one to fight for, they turned to the first pair of open arms they could find.

More than fifty years after the Outer Wars ended for everyone on Sol, more than a million time-lagged veterans came back to a Mars that was even worse off than when they left it. Mars declared independence only three months later. USFA forces responded immediately, mobilizing a mixed task force from Luna Harbor and moving to blockade Mars. A rail gun on Phobos sunk the "UFBC Telemachus" more than half an AU out from Mars before the task force had moved into position, killing Vice Admiral Cal Vance. Declarations of war were exchanged and so began the Mars independence conflict.

What was your involvement in the Battle of Phobos? There wasn't much in the papers, all I know is that it was a short naval battle that coincided with the Landings on Mars proper.

We were only in orbit for a matter of minutes. Everyone had their wireless dialed in to fleetcom, listening to the damage reports filtering in. All the transmissions had a thin layer of static because of interference—it was magnetic or solar or something. With everyone locked into their crash seats it was dead quiet aside from the resultant ambiance; the restraints immobilized you almost completely so we kept our rifles between our knees, and if you turned on your radio, which was only halfway compulsory, you had to wait until the ship kissed dirt to turn it off. I pieced together that Admiral Thulsa sent the destroyer escorts to wipe out the railgun, meanwhile the rest of the fleet were engaged in high orbit trying to carve a path for our sardine cans. The Martian Aerospace Force was weak, all they had were some piddly corvettes and a few missile cruisers, but they had time to prepare. They managed to make those 500 seconds costly for us.

The Landings. I'm told it was quite bloody.

There wasn't any time to breathe once we touched down. The enemy predicted our LZ perfectly, so the sardine cans that survived the AA screen—fewer than twelve of them loaded with about a hundred guys each—hit the dunes and came immediately under fire. The sardine cans are softer than you think. Heat shielding can shrug off small arms but an autocannon tears through the hull like paper. We learned that firsthand. The fleet was busy mixing it up in high orbit so we had no support in those opening moments.

((GM Note: When you start a BATTLE, you're stuck in it until it's finished, so unlike the fluff posts that requires a majority vote.))

We'll come back to the Landings later. Tell me about your first deployment in the Air Cavalry.

A short time after the Landings we were organized into our normal outfits. We were tasked with seizing the enemies' forward armor bases. The Martian tanks were deployed and battling with the infantry screen while the frigates tried to land our own armor to counterattack. HQ wanted them to have no chance of escaping back to their lines so we were to go in and smash their reserves to clear the way for a rapid advance. The fleet was mostly depleted but we still had fighter cover, so they struck the enemy's artillery while we deployed from our VTOLs just out of rifle range.
