Let's Make a Death World
« on: May 08, 2015, 03:31:31 pm »

This is sort of a let's create a setting, with the theme of dangerous. But survivable. And try to be creative.

There are vast deserts on the surface of the world where the sand is whipped into vicious storms that flay the skin from most denizens not from them.

The world has many layers of cavern. Often, the increase of weight from a shuttle or large creature will result in a cave in, many massive sinkholes dot the surface.

Fortunately the some underground caverns are filled with a living ecosystem fed by geothermal vents.

Unfortunately the animals and plants are incredibly dangerous, one common species can cut through even hardened metals with jet propelled streams of acids.

Doubly fortunately, if one is able to kill these creatures their hide can be used to protect from the acid, as it is obviously acid-proof.

Doubly unfortunately, they are nigh-unkillable with commonly available materials.

There is a microscopic parasite which has evolved to feed on emotional chemicals, which stimulates production of these in the host and causes inflammation of the glands. The characteristic symptom is extreme mood swings and bouts of violent rage. These can be severe enough to cause fatal aneurism.

Also in these caverns are a form of giant worm. This worm's tail is a spike that it can use to dig through many substances. Such as rock. And flesh. And some metals. Oh, and it requires recently dead corpses to reproduce.

Some areas are nearly completely lifeless (aside from toxic or otherwise dangerous microorganisms) due to naturally occurring fission reactors contaminating the groundwater. Some life-forms on the edge of these regions suffer from diseases that make them bleed carcinogens.

All machinery is inevitably infected with a fungus which consumes the electrons in the same way a plant consumes sunlight. This causes everything electronic to malfunction, and due to the fungus themselves generating an interfering electrical field, No scanners are aware of this danger.

A common, fast growing, edible but disgusting plant has several nasty features . First, vicious thorns up to a meter long line most of the surface, and second. the plant breaks down a nontoxic gas into a deadly poison that is built into the tissue during certain unpredictable times as well as an acid released on the plant's death. And there is no way to tell if theplant is poisonous until you eat it

There isn't a single pool of water that isn't teeming with bacteria. Also, since all rain is acid rain, this bacteria is acid-resistant so your stomach acid can't even kill it off.

There are small oceans of fresh water, due to gigantic creatures which metabolize acid and turn it into H2O. They can spray with enough force to saw through concrete.

Pale ochre lichens coat the rocks. They eagerly suck the heat out of the surroundings, using it to fuel their growth. This, of course, also applies to the living, which can result in the unprepared dying in scant minutes, drained dry and left as a frozen chunk of flesh to serve as fertilizer.
