Alright so I caught a breeding pair of cave crocodiles
« on: May 06, 2015, 10:02:08 am »

I have two cave crocodiles one male one female :D The issue is that the male is named because he killed two of my dorfs. the wiki article on training says that if I train and then release the named one it will attack my dorfs. So my question is if I train the female and then put both of them in a pen will the male attack the female?

I trained a named cave croc and a named GCS on my last fort. They never turned on no one, always behaving nicely on their pasture. I dunno, maybe the wiki is outdated?

No idea anymore, I'd just test it with either a dog or some other trained creature (like the ever useful crundle!) before risking the other cave crocodile.

Chain the male up in the pasture. This seems to pacify everything ever.

Training actually has quality levels now, and is an ongoing process.  If you don't let them out of their cages until they're (Trained), they should be safe if not crowded.  Even tame dogs can bite when crowded, I wouldn't want to contemplate what a half-wild alligator would do.

But don't turn off animal training, or they'll go wild again!  Only (tame) animals are permanently domesticated.  Train them as children and they're tame forever.

This could be Fun if you don't know who your animal trainer is.  Urist McHauler dies a GCS death, 3 months later, your alligators go on a rampage...

If they've killed a dwarf, they're considered an enemy of your civilization and will keep killing. Its semi-related to the loyality cascade bug but there's no easy fix. If you want to try and get a farm going, if the female is untrained is build the cage with the male next to a chain, pasture it, then put the female in a pasture near the male. THat should allow pregencies to happen while preventing croc rampage.

On that note, I got a defective GCS recently which will not shoot silk at all :(.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

Put a fortification between the GCS and its target. GCS only shot web reliably if they can't reach their target.

Not sure if this functionality has changed, but it USED to be that a GCS would only shoot webs if it COULD path to the target. My set-up was a target-room with a creature staked out in it, fortifications along one wall (with a raising drawbridge to act as a shutter), a GCS behind the fortifications, and a cage-trapped corridor allowing "access" from the GCS to the target. When the shutter was dropped, the GCS would shoot webs at the target creature, then run down the corridor to reach it... and get re-caged by the cage-traps.

I put the named croc and the not named croc in the same pasture, and it's fine.

Huh. I'll have to try this. I tried a chained GCS but no love. I'll report back to see if I can get it to work. I'm trying to make webbed cage traps, but even when I open the door to let the GCS get to the stationed dwarves, it just goes and gets caught.

Make sure to train their babies as soon as they hatch, as training on those will be permanent if you get them to (tame)! Then you can cage the parents again. Also, mamma cave crocs lay a huge amount of eggs.

As a note, a legendary animal trainer is a *bad* thing for this as is having expert knowledge of a species; you want an idiot training things for domestication. What happens is the child inhertiants the mothers training. My legendary animal trainer masterfully trains, and the end result is they don't go semi-wild until after they've grown up.

Pen your animals in an area designated for animal training and your animal trainers will keep training trained animals, keeping them at masterful level. I have never in 30 years of training animals had a baby grow up before it was trained.
