why do we know about it already?

Metagaming. Acceptable metagaming, of course, but "plot"-wise, you have no reason or knowledge to collect it other than it's an alien substance.

There was a que?
The text is more than just flavour. I'm of the opinion if you can't be bothered to read it you deserve what you get.
Such as lost meld.

Actually Meld first made its appearance in the test mission, set one year before XCOM, and it was secured but then stolen so XCOM knows what it is when they see the canisters but since you have no samples you couldn't research it yet.

Oh, and here I thought Andrea just ate all the Meld like some kind of alien popsicle so now she has millions of nanomachines coursing through her bloodstream. It would certainly explain how she got +5 to Aim AND Will upon level-up from Hidden Potential. And also why she's still only a Specialist after going at this for a whole year -- she was probably certified Article 12 (Unfit for Duty) after putting herself at grave risk partaking of the visitors' orange kool-aid. ^^

Incidentally, you asked for backstory, so here I go:
Name: Andrea Stirling
Gender: Female
Nationality: Scotland
Backstory: Originally part of the SAS-led joint task force that stopped the first alien UFO landing, Andrea was deactivated for almost a month over concerns of alien equipment and physiology affecting her control and effectiveness in combat. She was later pressed back into the fight due to a dire need for soldiers with experience in dealing with the aliens. Her firm service record caught the eye of X-COM almost a year later, and Andrea jumped at the chance to join the elite extraterrestrial combat unit and fight back for Earth.

Above the earth, a satellite drifted. Ceaselessly, it watched the earth below. Optics whirred and focused as it noticed something.

Beneath the earth, a console in XCOM control beeped.

"Satellite's picked something up... radar has confirmed. Commander, we have a UFO. Do you have orders?"

March 3rd, 2017

UFO CONTACT: UFO-1
Location: United Kingdom
Altitude: Low
Size: Small
Class: Unknown

Now that you detected a UFO it's time to make a choice: if you want to Intercept the UFO you have to pick an aircraft and its stance: Aggresive (+15 hit for both sides), Balanced (no changes) or Defensive (-15 hit for both sides). If you think you can't take on the UFO or want to see if it lands, you can Ignore it, but this could end up with unexpected results, so think about it.

Send an interceptor with Avalanche missile on aggressive. At this early stage, it's better to go aggressive so we actually hit the bloody thing before the end of the interception window.

You're forgetting that we have 4 Interceptors to call upon to take down 1 small-size UFO, so even if we miss the window with one, we can send up another to try again. Also, we can abort an interception if our fighter starts taking too much damage.

Thus, I suggest we send up Interceptor 1 (Mark Hamill) on Defensive. Less chance of getting hit means our interceptors spend less time getting repaired; and if they don't get hit at all, then they can go right back up to engage the UFO again as soon as they refuel and rearm at base (less than 1 hour). Let's try and get in a hit or two first, and then send up an Interceptor on Balanced or Aggressive to finish off the UFO.

Addendum:  Abort the interception immediately if our interceptor takes 50% damage or above.

Nah, we only have time to send 2 or 3 interceptors, and with defensive we'd be lucky if we get even one hit. Plus, it's better to have 2 interceptors out for 2 weeks than 4 for 1 week.

We should go Aggresive, regardless of how defensive we are chances are that we will get hit once, additionally the first hit seems to add the most to the length of time needed to be repaired (there is probably a minimum amount of time with more time added depending on damage). Due to the fact that that more aggressive tactics mean that fewer planes are used and therefore fewer are damaged I think it is best we go with an aggressive stance.
Also 50% damage is way too low, I say once a plane is below 75% it should get one last shot before bugging out.

Send Mark Hamill up there, agressive. In case of 75% damage, make a strategic retreat.
