40:24 unplayable due to crashes
« on: May 03, 2015, 04:00:20 pm »

Hey all,

Just got back from an extended hiatus and picked up the newest version (lazy newb pack), hadn't played since 34.  My problem is that the game is constantly crashing now, where v34 was stable as a rock.  Crashes happen randomly, and about a third of the time when I go to save.  The saving is the worst, because one of three things happens:  Best case, the game saves properly but crashes, and all I have to do is restart.  Other times, it fails to save and crashes and I'm back to the last season.  Worst of all, I've had saves corrupted.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Try playing without any mods or addons.
I do have occasional crashes after saving from menu, though (but not during autosaves) and never had a corrupted save in 40.x. No random crashes as well.

Don't build on trees, too.

Only plugins I'm running is the LNP launcher to set pop caps and Phoebus tileset.

try running the game straight out of the (download) box and let us know if you crash. if you can't read the default tileset then just let the dwarves idle or something for a few seasons, then try to save.

Well, seems I'm not the only one experiencing crashes , sometimes they happen when I :

*Hit Esc when going back from a menu or the key just bellow esc (not 100% sure about the case, can't allways reproduce).
*Build something near a tree (So I cut down the trees to try to avoid this, but in some biomes they pop up pretty fast ) .

I've also observed that :

*Woodcutting is very very dangerous , around 1 in 10 times a dwarf cutting down a tree will stand under the tree when it falls down and might die due to that or suffer severe injury (essentially a game breaking bug for me and not really a feature). The cause is usually that wood has accumulated above the tree branches and falls straight down on the head of the dwarf (Probably from another tree collapsing some time ago from woodcutting).

Far as the woodcutting thing goes, I've had much better luck by only designating one tree at a time.  Most of the time I had problems, it seems like my woodcutter was running to the next tree into the path of the one he just felled.

Also going to try drafting my woodcutter, putting him in armor, and leaving him inactive with wear armor while off duty on.

Pretty sure that doesn't work that way, because it conflicts with the woodcutting uniform.

Crashes often for me to. I have adopted the habit of saving often.

Okay, so I found and downloaded the patch that lets DF use 4gb of RAM instead of only 2 and the crashing stopped.  Saving also got about 1000% faster :D

so it was crashing because of weird edge cases that most people would never see and you were calling it "unplayable"?

...huh

No, I mean most things that require more than 2 GB of RAM.

Unplayable to him. Your ability to play doesn't take away from the truth of the statement for him.

This 4Gb thing really needs to be addressed soon.
Isn't it a simple matter of Toady enabling the Large Address Aware flag as default instead of us having to do it manually? Or are there disadvantages I'm not aware of?
