Just like you said it. Forge World - Imperial Guard - Desperado is a build in itself already, you'd just have to make the appropriate choices. Link for some assistance.

I'll can get the three rolls of anyone who wants me to help them with chargen; that includes you if you want, Sirus.

@Beneviento: it's late and I'm kind of drowsy, but 2nd Edition's Divination for 41 is:
39–43. A mind without purpose wanders in dark places.
When gaining Mental Disorders (see page 287), the character may choose to gain new Disorder instead of increasing the severity of an existing Disorder.

@Sirus: yeah, chainswords are noisy. No silent takedown when their revving can be heard more than a hundred meters away. And lasweapons have the advantage of infinitely-rechargeable power packs unless you damage them and they're usually less noisy than SP guns, though solid projectile weaponry does have that advantage of being able to change ammo types and you could walk around with suppressed guns. Here's the rulebook's weapon volume chart: Impact of a throwing knife 10m / Silenced autopistol 50m / Warhammer smashing in a skull 100m / Revving of a chainsword 200m / Lasgun crack 500m / Autogun fire 1km / Bolter round detonation 2km / Earthshaker cannon impact 10km.

Is there any chance I could start with some sort of rifle using that rather poor Influence? I wouldn't mind having something with decent range, maybe a marksman's rifle.

First digit of Influence characteristic = number of items of Scarce or easier availability you can pick at game start. Since you want some for marksmanship, your character could start with either of those and still have another acquisition to blow:
Code: (Sniper Rifle, Basic Solid Projectile) [Select]
Range 200m | Rof S/–/– | Damage 1d10+4 I | Pen 3 | 20 Shots | Full Reload | Accurate, Reliable | 5kg | Scarce Avail.
Code: (Long Las, Basic Las) [Select]
Range 150m | Rof S/–/– | Damage 1d10+3 E | Pen 1 | 40 Shots | Full Reload | Accurate, Felling (4) Reliable | 4.5kg | Scarce Avail.
The sniper rifle can accept specialized ammo (Amputator, Dumdum, Expander, Man-Stopper, Scrambler, Tox) while the long-las has the Las Weapon Variable Setting going for it, as well as the Felling quality (ignores a target's Unnatural Toughness bonus by that number when calculating damage) and overcharge (+1 damage, cuts "clip" size in half) or hotshot (single-shot pack, +1 damage, Pen rises to 4, loses Reliable and gains Tearing) ammo packs.

As for your other free acquisition, I advise some reasonable armor. Guard flak is always good to have on top of the assassin's fetish latex suit.

Does Guard Flak make it more difficult to dodge attacks, or sneak around?

Not unless you have over 50 Agility. In that case yes, it will apply your effective Agility as being 50 instead. Not something you have to worry at the moment, and it's certainly better to have good armor in order to survive up to that point.

Alright, guess I'll go ahead and get some of that Guard Flak. Better protection all around!

Think I'll also go with the sniper rifle. The lack of Felling is a pity, but it does have longer range and higher armor penetration, plus specialty ammo.

The difference in range isn't too much of a problem with how ranges work in the w40k line (max range being over four times the Range listed), but I can understand your point. Prepare to roll requisition tests to keep the rifle supplied, though.

Edit: to elaborate, trying to acquire anything Scarce or rarer drops the group's Subtlety; trying because failing or succeeding the first digit of the negative modifier is deducted from the party's subtlety. Standard ammo for your weapon is one step lighter, meaning that for your sniper rifle of Scarce availability, the ammo will have Average availability. Let's say you fail the test and go "oh, what if I try to get some special ammo?". The least rare special ammo is Scarce...

That's part of the reason my character will be good with acquisitions and probably handle the entire group's requests: the Administratum's power of dropping one level of rarity from purchases means we can get more material with less undue noise.

Any melee weapons with Scarce availability? I think I'd like something better than the warhammer. Maybe a better pistol too.

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

Scarce or lower, Melee:
Code: (Name | Type | Range | Damage | Penetration | Qualities | Weight | Availability) [Select]
Chainaxe | Melee | — | 1d10+4 R | 2 | Tearing | 13kg | Scarce
Chainblade | Melee | — | 1d10+1 R | 1 | Tearing | 2kg | Scarce
Chainsword | Melee | — | 1d10+2 R | 2 | Balanced, Tearing | 6kg | Average
Great Weapon | Melee | — | 2d10 R | 0 | Unbalanced | 7kg | Scarce
Knife | Melee/Thrown | 5m | 1d5 R | 0 | — | 1kg | Plentiful
Shield | Melee | — | 1d5 I | 0 | Defensive | 3kg | Common
Spear | Melee | — | 1d10 R | 0 |  Primitive (8) | 3kg | Common
Staff | Melee | — | 1d10 I | 0 | Balanced, Primitive (7) | 3kg | Plentiful
Sword | Melee | — | 1d10 R | 0 | Balanced | 3kg | Common
Truncheon | Melee | — | 1d10 I | 0 | Primitive (7) | 2kg | Plentiful
Warhammer | Melee | — | 1d10+3 I | 1 | Concussive (1), Primitive (8) | 4.5kg | Scarce
Whip Melee | 3m | 1d10 R | 0 | Flexible, Primitive (6) | 2kg | Average
Shock Maul | Melee | — | 1d10+3 I | 0 | Shocking | 2.5kg | Scarce

Take note of the following options: Good Craftsmanship Sword (Common > Scarce due to Good, +5 to WS Tests from Good quality), Best Craftsmanship Staff (Plentiful > Scarce due to Best, +10 to WS Tests, +1 damage from Best quality, two-handed).

Basically, good-craftsmanship makes the weapon two steps rarer and best makes them three steps rarer.

Pistols:
Code: [Select]
Autopistol | Pistol | 30m | S/–/6 | 1d10+2 I | 0 | 18 | Full | 1.5kg | Average
Hand Cannon | Pistol | 35m | S/–/– | 1d10+4 I | 2 | 5 | 2 Full | 3kg | Scarce
Stub Automatic | Pistol | 30m | S/3/– | 1d10+3 I | 0 | 9 | Full | 1.5kg | Average

Chainswords only do one more damage than a chainblade?
Huh.

Yep. That's what the stats in the book say. The chainsword has one more damage and penetration and, more importantly for when you want to Parry, it has Balanced (+10 to Parry).

Well then, a chainsword and autopistol it is. I have one more slot, so I suppose I could take a Guard Flak like Sirus?

Yep, a Imperial Guard Flak Armor set is a good choice. Poor craftsmanship enforcer light carapace is another if you don't mind being inside a badly-fitted set of armor weighing 15Kg and with your effective Ag limited to 35. You get an extra AP to all locations in exchange for your suffering.

It's worth pointing out that if you're not melee-focused, you might want to redistribute your stats and use the pistol as your melee weapon (pistols can be fired in melee without penalty, while basic weapons can't be used that way, making gunslingers reasonably flexible).

@Sirus: if you're in doubt about which drug to get, I'll say Obscura (Rare, can be used as a bargaining chip) is purely for recreative purposes while Slaught (Scarce, has situational usefulness) is a combat drug. Despite that, both fit your character concept of a pit fighter due to the descriptions:
Quote from: Obscura
Though often illegal, obscura is popular in many fighting units where combatants are eager for respite from constant battle, as well as among civilians seeking relief from the drudgeries of harsh life. Obscura-users enter a dream-like state for 1d5 hours (if required to engage in combat, consider them under the effects of a hallucinogen grenade). For 1d10 hours after the effects wear off, they enter a deep depression, unless another dose of obscura is taken. Obscura is Addictive.
Quote from: Slaught
This combat drug (also known as onslaught) is frequently taken to heighten awareness and improve reaction time. It literally speeds up the user, but causes neural and physiological damage with prolonged application.
Taking a dose increases the user’s Agility bonus and Perception bonus by 3 for 2d10 minutes. Note this does not increase the actual characteristic values. When the drug runs its course, the user must pass a Challenging (+0) Toughness test or suffer a –20 penalty to Agility tests and Perception tests for 1d5 hours. Slaught is Addictive.
