Repeat jobs and multiple workshops
« on: May 01, 2015, 03:05:01 am »

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could inform me on whether I need to setup the same recurring jobs in every instance of a particular workshop? Say I have 2 mason workshops and, in one of them, I put 4 repeat jobs. If the fortress is behind on those 4 item types would another dwarf use the second mason workshop to help fulfill the first workshops repeat job list or must I put the recurring jobs in all instances of that workshop?

It is as you said it here. Are you aware of the manager? I forget the specific hotkeys to access it, but the manager screen lets you queue production orders in sets of thirty, and automatically assigns the work to appropriate workshops.

Normally when you assign one workshop multiple repeats, that workshop and only that workshop will work on those jobs. If you have a lot of big repeats there, its going to slow wverything down because the dwarf is going to work on one indefinitely.

The better solution is using the manager as the poster above me said. I think it's u > m to get there. The manager will distribute the work load evenly between all appropriate workshops allowing more than one dwarf to work the same queue. This does have its drawbacks because the manager will only order up to 30 of an item and then you have to tell them you want 30 more.

I personally use Workflow with DFHack. I can give it a range of say 25-50 rock blocks, and it will automatically make up to 50 blocks and then suspend the repeat job until my stocks drop to 25 blocks. Then it will automatically start production back up for me. This way I always have at least 25 blocks on hand. Takes a lot of the micromanagement out and means I rarely need more than a few workshops for certain things. I was iffy on giving it a try for a long while but man am I glad I finally tried it.

It's j-m and then q to add jobs via manager But first you have to designate a manager and provide an office.
If you have the same repeat job in two workshops, both can be picked up by two dwarves simultaneously. You have to add the jobs explicitly in both workshops.

A repeat job does not block other jobs in the workshop indefinetely
After one item has been built the job is sent to the end of the list and the next job is carried out.

I know it cycles through repeat jobs, less sure about other jobs.

You can also promote a repeat job back up to the top of the list

I use workflow a lot, keeping plenty of
Socks for 500 dwarfs is a breeze. :)

How many fields does that take to supply that much cloth?

You should look for my "sub 5fps quest" thread
I started overproducing early on. But had 3 5*5 plots
Fertilized (to rid logs) with +5 growers. And 3 farmers workshops
Cloth wasn't the problem, leather was.
Had 10 +5 weavers, the kept mooding on me :)

When setting repeat jobs, when that job is completed, instead of being removed it's instead put to the BOTTOM of the list.  So if you add a non-repeating job, then the workshop will produce the repeating jobs once each, then the unique job, then resume the repeating jobs.

Oh, I thought it blocked everything. This is useful.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.
