Does cave moss affect sand collection?
« on: April 30, 2015, 03:46:49 pm »

Didn't see this specifically on the wiki.  Broke into Cavern 1, and now my top soil layers are slowing changing into fungus :-\  Does it replace sand?  If so, is there any way to have a sand zone connected to the main fort without contamination?

It doesnlt replace it, but it does cover it, an easy fix would be just putting a paved road on top of your sand collection area.

Wouldn't paving the tile make the sand equally inaccessible?

Apparently, grass that grew after embark doesn't block sand, but grass that grew before it does. So the answer is no.

You'd have to remove the construction after, but you'd then have sand, not cave moss.

You could also pen a cow in a small spot and let handle that for you  I wonder what a good size would be for compromise between moss coverage, sand coverage, and cow starvation.

No you wouldn't. Paved roads do not block the collection of sand or clay.

Good to know.  Last query; Is that roads specifically, or will any floor tile suffice?

Would floor grates work?

I remember reading that floor grates worked for stopping grass/cave moss and allowing sand collection.  Can't say from personal experience though.

Couldn't you just collect the sand from the walls? I know it works like that for clay.

If you put the grate over a tile that does not have moss on it already, then you can still collect sand through it. Also, use (b)uild, (O, capitalized, not lower case) and clear existing tiles with grass/moss with a dirt road.

Seems like a lot of trouble, either way.  So long as the moss doesn't replace sand, I don't mind having it atop my collection zone.

Paved road works like a charm.
