((Huh, so if I take a turn, it's just me that gets a check? Everyone else just stands around?

if so, wow, feels like we should do these democratically...))

Arvin explains his findings.

"There should be some sort of bridge across here...though, it may be underwater, or we may have to activate it somehow. Perhaps those engravings have a clue...or maybe we'll just have do do it manually."

Action: Step carefully into the water (checking depth and if I disturb any critters with my staff beforehand)-if I enter the water safely, tap around with my staff, looking perhaps for the tell-tale sound of paved stone, indicating the path of a submerged bridge. Use the map to help me, if possible, but don't use any more turns.

Indeed. As I said, use your checks wisely (or at least democratically). In this case it was useful

The water is cool but not dangerous. You (Arvin) take the lit torch from Astra and wade in, probing with your staff for something solid and man-made. You keep going until the water comes up to your knees but find nothing but solid earth beneath the waters - nothing artificial. You try to go farther but almost slip and fall into the water. It seems the lake is quite deep from that point on, and you'd need to swim. Yet, it troubles you that you cannot see the other side of the lake; perhaps swimming is not the best idea.

Note, no check was used here. In the future I will always tell you if an action requires a check and you can decide what to do from there.

"I could take a closer look at those runes, but it would take some time for me to get a precise translation. All I can make out right now is 'fire, love, sleep and steal,' but these runic languages are finicky, and always require close inspection to make sense of them."

Arvin nods.

"Honestly, we know reality doesn't make sense here-it conforms to the rule of the archithects. If we tried to swim across this lake-without obeying the rules of this place, I doubt we'd ever get across. It probably goes on forever, unless you are actually using the bridge.

I think you should try to decipher the runes. At worst, we waste some time. If it doesn't pan out, we'll have to take the long way around, I suppose...still, different paths, same destination."

Action: +1 vote for deciphering runes

Astra nods in agreement. "It might help."

Decipher runes.

((R+Scholar = 6 >> DS = 4; Critical!) You gain one experience) Closer examination of the runes reveals that the language is quite similar to one you did your academic thesis on. It takes you a while to record all the characters and then decipher them. At one point your torches run out of fuel and you must relight them (-2 uses from Flasks of Oil) and you do so without any hesitation, absorbed as you are with the runes.

However, your efforts bear fruit, here is what the characters read (an excellent translation, if you do say so yourself):

To find the bridge, seek me
I am loved by thieves
I am feared by men
I am slain by fire
I am needed by sleep

"...thus, we should let the lights go out, and then the bridge should appear? Cunning puzzle. Without the help of the runes, it would be a most unlikely solution. Instead of dousing our torches, how about I remain here while the rest of you take the light some ways away...if I find anything, I will call out and give you exact instructions.

It remains to be seen if the bridge will vanish once the area is relit, after we find it."

Arvin smiled to himself. This was the sort of the thing the 'methodical' was made for! Unless of course they were completely wrong...

Action: Once my allies temporarily take the light away, attempt my search once more with my staff leading the way, remembering the exact way I searched earlier-tap tap tap. If successful, call out to my allies and give them precise directions to follow me as I lead the way across the hypothetical bridge.

Sorry about the late reply guys.

I'm a little confused as to what you guys are doing. How are you "taking out the light", are you putting out the torches? Or just moving the people with the torches away from Arvin. If so, keep in mind that a torch provides at least dim light regardless of where it is. I assume you're doing the latter.

You (Arvin) hand the torch back to Astra and the party backs as far away as they can get from the lake. The light recedes but you can still see the water. You try wading in again, and tap around, but there is no difference from before.

If you're afraid that you'll need to expend more oil to relight the torches, don't. Fuel runs out every two turns, you can turn off and on the torch without any penalty in between.

Or just moving the people with the torches away from Arvin

((I assumed this at first. If we can just turn them on and off, that's cool.))
