Recommended science fiction books?
« on: April 29, 2015, 01:03:44 am »

I'd like to order some more science fiction books, but I'm sort of at a loss as to which ones.
I've already ordered four (2001,first two Culture books and neuromancer) and they should arrive soon, but beyond Chasm City, I don't know what else to buy. Feel free to suggest fantasy books too, I guess.

I thought Dune was pretty good.
'Course, I only ever read the first book, only one I could get my hands on, but still.

Anything by Robert Heinlein, particularly Space Cadet and Starship Troopers. The Forever War is good too.

Anathem is pretty good. It's my favourite book, at least. Really fuckin' weird.

Foundation (Asimov) is a classic (even if the style is dry and the fact that the last 2 tomes are plain). Very video-game compatible.

I like a lot Hyperion (Dan Simmons, who also wrote Ilium and its sequel Olympos, which are both fine, too). It is more complicated, and quite long, too.

I really like Solaris (Lem). The two movies (Tarkovski and Soderbergh) derived from it don't fully explore the real subject of the book, even if Tarkovski is obviously better.

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke is one of the best stories I've read in the realm of sci-fi. Dunno why, it's just strangely compelling.
...
Also anything in the Xeelee series by Steven Baxter.
...
Spin, Axis, and Vortex, three novels by ... some guy. Forget his name.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I've read the first Dune book (don't really feel like reading the others, for some reason) and the Foundation series.

I'll look into all the rest, thanks c:

Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Shadow of the Hegemon by Card are all great. The rest get iffy, though.

I highly recommend most of the Bolo series, especially the stuff by the original creator, Keith Laumer.

Also, I've found that copies of X year's best science fiction are usually entertaining reads.

I second Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow but I veto any other Ender books by Card.

Second the original Bolo books.
